He’s Newcastle bound. So good enough for a champions league club but not us?
Newcastle have a world class striker who plays week in week out. He’d be going there to replace Wilson, another injury prone striker who, on his day, is decent.

You think we can afford to sign a guy who isn’t fit half the season as our main man?

He'd be a depressing signing for West Ham yet alone for a club like Manchester United.

He was on roughly 100k at Everton. Given its his last big payday probably he will likely want higher wages or a big fat sign on fee. The idea he will take a cut deal or even a pay per play deal is utterly absurd, have a word with yourself.

So whoever takes him will probably be paying 120-150k a week due to no transfer fee for 4-5 years. If your being generous you could say as a back up to score 3-7 goals it's costly but maybe they could prove vital this season.

But what happens 2-3 years later when his body is even less capable than now snd still only scoring a few goals. He will have no resale value and no one will pay a fee nor the wages to move him on. You'll be stuck just like you are with so many players with a low scoring striker on reasonable money for 2-3 years.

And finally, is one in something like 5.5 goals good enough? Surely there has to be someone younger/fitter out there on a modest transfer fee but lower wages capable of that sort of return. And even if it does go wrong, you'd still get *some* transfer value back and it's not just totally sunk costs.

Who the feck is going to pay him that much? Fecking hell!

If there is any truth to this story, then we might just as well put all of the scouting department up for the next bout of redundancies.

After getting knock backs from Delap and Gyokeres, the next best option that a global network of scouts can put forward is Calvert-Lewin?

As you say we don't know whether there is anything in this rumour.

But yes, it is a damning indictment of our scouting if we cannot identify a single player in the whole of world football who would be better than Calvert-Lewin. It's one thing to be cautious and trust previous Premier League success over players who have developed elsewhere, but I despair if we are now trusting players shown to be mediocre in the Premier League over the entire rest of the world.

I highly doubt if there was any truth in you going for DCL it would be to be your main striker.

Whatever else we do we will not be playing Cunha up top. He is coming in to be the left sided 10 in this system which is the role he has excelled in for Wolves, it would be peak stupidity to sign him and promptly play him in another position.
Stupidity you say? Should go hand in hand with United. That'll be his dominant position of course it will. But don't be surprised to see him playing up top at some points during the season. With Hojlund flopping, Zirkzee not an out and out striker and Obi still young who else? Rashford? Mbuemo may be if he signs.

He is a decent player though, he’s been unfairly thrust into an impossible situation really. If he hadn’t been put in as Uniteds no.9 at 20 years old who knows how his career would have went. Look at Etitike, went to PSG and flopped, now people want to spend €100m on him. Gancalo Ramos is another. He needs time to develop, preferably with a season PL striker ahead of him, such as Watkins but not DCL.
Decent is a stretch at the moment. Potential to be decent... possibly. His first touch and hold up play are abysmal even for someone his age. Not gambling on crosses is a big issue too. Are you suggesting Watkins coming in will develop Hojlund?

Why?

United need a striker, don't have a huge amount of money to spend, seems evident we are looking at players who know the league well, that narrows down the selection quite a bit...

Is he the perfect player? No, not by a long shot.
Can he score, yes, fitness issues aside, DCL is actually a very decent player, not prolific but works hard, holds up play well and is good with both feet and in the air.

Could certainly see Mbuemo there more readily than Cunha. Amad can slot is as the right 10 with Dalot behind. Not my preferred option but it does offer balance if we need to play him up top.

People somehow trying to justify how this could possibly make sense

Absolutely unbelievable

Was about to post similar, what on earth have I stumbled upon?

Calvert-Lewin, renowned for his unavailability?!

I'd expect to see Mbeumo up there before Cunha. Partly due to thinking he's more suited to the role, and partly due to having a better option to replace him (Amad obviously).

they’re getting him as Isaak cover. We’re looking for a main striker.
Nobody in their right mind thinks that we were signing him as anything other than to be a back up and to add depth. He's a prem striker, has had a couple of good seasons, those for free aren't something we can afford to turn down right now but of course we'll pass up on him.

The move doesn't make sense on any level !!! Any possible value he has is as a back-up striker but can he even stay healthy enough to fulfil that role.

If we signed him, then Berrada can change his target to win the PL by 2028 to 2038. It's ok only a decade later.

Point is, you CANNOT put fitness issues aside, as someone previously suggested.
He has had 9 lengthy injuries in the past three seasons, and over those past three seasons has scored a grand total of 12 goals in the Premier League.

He is now 28, and isn't suddenly going to become less injury prone, it's more likely that he will become even more injury prone.

So this injury prone player, that's scored an average of 4 PL goals per season over the past three seasons, is somehow a clever solution?
Not to even mention that he'd be on a 3/4 year contract of approaching £150k per week.

Whatever angle you look at this, it's just bonkers to me.

A free transfer on a basic wage with appearance bonuses wouldn't be a bad signing especially if Hoijlund,.Rashford, Antony, Garnacho, Sancho all leave.

We'd still need another striker on top of this plus Mbuemo.

If you are paying Calvert-Lewin somewhere approaching £150k per week for an average of 4 PL goals per season, and you STILL need to add another striker, then you might just have well gone for Osimhen, paid the wages and be more or less guaranteed 20 goals a season.

Being linked with us is depressing in the fact that this club has gone from the likes of Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Van Persie, and Zlatan, to now being linked with strikers who are at best bang average, it is truly shocking how far this great club has fallen.

He's awful. For the wages he'd likely want I wouldn't take him even for free. Even at 100k a week he's a rip off.

hes going to be fit for a handful of games next season, and one then will be against us, where hel'll be unstoppable. its written.

Not completely against him as backup to starter, however absolutely no way to Hojlund that's for sure

This is how far we have fallen. We should never ever been linked with him in the first place.

Pretty much, we finished 15th so we have higher standards than Newcastle apparently.

He's a bench option for Newcastle, would have been the same for us. But some people naively think we would have signed him to be out main striker.

This would be an absolutely tragic signing and highly indicative of the type of peril United are in if this is really the best solution they can muster.

I would only take him IF we got a Watkins/Mateta too

As a Hull City fan I can't afford to be picky, and yet despite that I'd still be mortified if news came out we were signing DCL.

That should say a lot to a United fan. We barely escaped relegation to League One last season, and yet I still don't think he's good enough, and that's when he's fit which is a rarity. One of the worst top level strikers I've seen since Shane Long, and we actually had that dosser for a season.
