Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Such a Rickie Lambert to Liverpool type signing. Says a lot about where we are as a club at the moment.

If it's between him and no one, I can accept it. But if Højlund is moved on, we have to bring someone else than Calvert-Lewin in.

Same here.

If we get him it's only because he is a free agent and not because he's the profile we need.

It would really set a new low for our aspirations if this actually happens.
I feel this is scary press talk. The press would have a field day too.

Is this the club lowering our striker aspirations so that we are happy with Watkins or Nkunku?

I feel like it's just the press putting crap out because they know it scares fans like you, so gets a lot of shares and interactions, which is what they want.

People are losing their shit over a gossip column Sun story? Amazing.

What are people complaining about without knowing details?

Calvert-Lewin is a good player when he's available. His performance level is miles ahead of what Hojlund offered last season. Not even close. The biggest issue with him is his availability - he's injured way too often.

But as a free transfer on modest wages, he'd be low risk - so I don't see the problem. In case people haven't noticed, there's a dearth of number 9s out there at the moment. Options are thin on the ground and 9s that would've been considered pretty average a few years back are going for £60m+.

I think the club's plan looks good. Invest in high quality playmakers/wide forwards like Cuhna and Mbuemo and go cheaper on a CF focal point to bring the best out of them.

You don't need a high level CF to succeed. Liverpool won the league last season without one, Arsenal came 2nd and have performed like a top class team over the last 3 seasons without a high level CF. We'd be doing well to get anywhere near those performance levels next season, so why panic and spend £60m+ on a CF that may not even work out?

I don't get the point of signing someone that's barely an improvement on what we already have?
Who is he barely an improvement over? I think he's a vast improvement over Garnacho and Hojlund for example.

My issue is just injury, I would take a loan that's it.

A vast improvement? Really?

He's a bit better on his day at most.

We don't need to loan him as he's on a free transfer.

As a squad player I think it’s a good signing. But he’s on a free so he’ll want very good wages and considering his injury record we’d be stuck with him like we have been with Christian Eriksen.

Let’s just get a starting striker to compete with Zirkzee.

His injury record is woeful, and he averages about 30 games a season because of it, but he's a good centre forward whose a handful for any defence. He just doesn't score very often, and he's at the end of his career, so I reckon we'll sign him on a 5 year deal for 250k a week.

To be fair he is only 28. Fitness is an issue. If the club have accepted Obi isn't ready and Hojlund is away then a DCL as a 3rd choice (2yr deal) behind Zirkzee and a new forward could be good business.

I like him, but he's scored 19 goals in the last 4 seasons in the Premier League. He's the centre forward version of Phil Jones.

I’m waiting for the inevitable about face in this thread, where poster will convince themselves that this is a good deal, he would be the ideal backup striker on a pay as you play deal, he helps us meet the English player quota and is proven PL pedigree to help the likes of Obi. When he signs for West Ham or Brentford they will moan about the cluelessness of those in charge and then slowly retreat when he scores 2 goals in 20 appearances (15 as a sub) next season.

A striker who doesn't score much, add to the collection

Yeah definitely vast on those two players. But I just realised I was talking about Nkunku in a DCL thread

All I can see are doom mongers, have we even linked to him by anyone half decent?

People are losing their shit over a gossip column Sun story? Amazing.

Some people need to take a football holiday.

I've not looked at much transfer speculation or football related news for the last 6 weeks, plan on doing the same for the next 6 until the season starts.

No point getting worked up over something we have zero control over.

Can’t see why we’d consider signing him as anything other than a Weghorst style backup. Given there seems zero chance we’ll flog Zirkzee AND Hojlund, looks like an absolute non-runner.

I'm not saying this will happen, but the fact that the link doesn't surprise me at all says a lot.

The competent teams in the league are currently strengthening themselves with new, quality signings while we're arguably worse off than last season and not looking terribly likely to improve by more than a small percentage at this rate.

I imagine his agents will be pushing the names of Newcastle and United like mad. To try to get a bite from clubs like Brentford or Fulham! If a deal from a bigger club comes in it will be a bonus for him!

Because given how this club is run that story wouldn’t be too far-fetched as a possibility
This is conjecture. Look at the profile of all the players we've signed since Ineos took over.

If we need a bargain basement back up striker, then Danny Wellbeck should making his return. He has peaked much later on in his career, and just gets better. He out performs Calvert Lewin at every measure. And he is old skool MUFC, so he knows what the club needs right now.
