WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Tuesday that the House would begin a formal impeachment inquiry of President Trump, opening a fresh chapter of confrontation in response to startling allegations that the president sought to enlist a foreign power for his own political gain.

“The actions taken to date by the president have seriously violated the Constitution,” she said after emerging from a meeting of House Democrats in the basement of the Capitol. Mr. Trump, she said, “must be held accountable. No one is above the law.”

Thought this worthy of its own thread as it’s going to be a long and drawn out process no doubt.

Yawn. Been hearing this shite since he got elected. It ain’t gonna happen. They’re just arming Trump further for the next election, he can turn round and convince his supporters that the establishment is against them and are trying to shut him up.

No doubt this will change but the majority of independents currently supporting it is interesting. Might explain Pelosi trying it now.

The most interesting thing there is that 51 percent of Republican’s either support an impeachment inquiry or have enough doubt in him to say they don’t know.

Give them a week. They'll be back on side.

Reckon that will change much more quickly, the Republicans will try to make this an us versus them issue and the Republican base will fall in line like they have done every single time. The independents view will be more important, as long as there is support for it from them (and only 30% opposed) then the Democrats will feel like they can push it as far as they can - even if it won't be that far as impeachment is virtually impossible. If they start to turn then Pelosi will drop the issue quickly, can't risk it helping Trump in the election next year.

As if the average Trump supporter knows what impeachment means/represents, and how grave it is.

If Reagan survived the Iran-Contra crisis, Trump will survive until the next elections.

The only way he wins the marginal states is through record turnout. He's turned off too many independents, in almost every demographic his support is lower than it was in 2016.

Which I'd imagine is why Pelosi wasn't pushing it too heavily, as all she cares about is winning (arguably fair enough). But that was never the point of impeachment, it's not a political tool, it's a accountability tool. And his actions demand reaction, because the corrupt f*cker has pissed all over the document he swore to uphold. And the people who that should annoy the most are, bizarrely, his biggest supporters.

But all this reminds me of is that meme about playing chess with a pigeon.

Impeachment is very likely to occur as this is solely controlled by the House of Reps, removal from office by the Senate is virtually impossible. Slightly different system compared to the UK.

I read on a report that impeachment needs Senate approval and wouldn't pass there, is this definitely not true?
House conducts an inquiry and then votes on articles of impeachment. If passed the Senate then convenes a trial based on these articles - to be presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (Roberts). The Senate then votes on whether or not to convict. Any conviction must be by a 2/3 majority.

Given the Republicans hold the Senate 53-45(+2) the chances of conviction are not particularly high.

And so a Republican controlled Senate can prevent impeachment.

Woah, no impeachment then.

It's not quite how you have it. Being impeached does not mean you are definitely removed from office. Two presidents have been impeached by the House but none have been removed from office by the Senate - Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Richard Nixon resigned before he was impeached.

The House would draft articles of impeachment and can hold public hearings to lay out the charges. They then vote to impeach. Assuming that passes, it is then up to the Senate to hold a formal trial and vote whether to remove the President from office and that requires 2/3 majority. Given the GOP majority in the Senate it is extremely unlikely they would remove him.

Ah so impeachment, and removal from office, are two separate motions. If it doesn't lead to him being removed from office, then what use is impeachment?

Conviction yes, impeachment no. Impeachment refers to part of a process rather than an end result. A President is said to be impeached once the articles of impeachment have been voted on by the House of Representatives. An impeached president then faces trial in the Senate.

Here, it’s a mandate for deeper investigations into his dirty laundry as opposed to the neutered ones currently ongoing where inquiries are routinely ignored without repercussion. The danger being that everyone already knows he’s a scumbag so it doesn’t hurt him (and may actually help) if nothing damning is found.

Tucker Carlson right now is basically laying down the “even if he did it, it isn’t a crime” argument.
The progression usually goes something like:
1. He didn't do it
2. Ok well even if he did it, it isn't a crime
3. Yeah he did it but he did it for the right reasons. Honestly, why isn't everyone doing it? Trump is a genius!

They made it through parts 1 and 2 before I changed the channel.
