People should be excused for anything they post just after their country gets eliminated from a tournament. I turn into a complete nutter for atleast 8 hours afterwards.

I mean they have always in my lifetime been at a level where they can give the decent teams a bit of a contest and deal with the likes of Australia and Bosnia. I wouldn't quite go that far. This World Cup Belgium certainly looked far from impervious to slumping to a dull 1-0/2-1 upset sort of loss to a team like usa. That's partly what makes the extent of the loss more amusing.

In all seriousness, this did the exact opposite effect to what Trump and FIFA wanted. It galvanised Belgium and put immense pressure on the US, you could tell from watching. Not even remotely likely to be honest. What are people basing this suggestion on? The US media got themselves in a fervour about how good the team were based on three games against mediocre and very limited opposition. The best ball the US had in their court was home advantage. 1 through 11 the team is very average. Their star striker is a middling player plying his trade in Ligue 1, their star player and great hope is an absolute fanny journeyman, who is seemingly made of glass. They have three decent midfielders to be fair to them, one decent fullback, one very average full back, one middling centre back, one not very good one, and one downright terrible one. Then they have an appalling goalie. Their bench offers nothing at all. Belgium meanwhile had Doku, Lukaku and De Bruyne on the bench, all who would walk into the US team. They have a better coach, better players in nearly every position, and recently beat the US 5-2 while playing an experimental line up. Nobody outside of the US saw the US as anything other than underdogs for this game. The only things that would carry them through was the energy from a home crowd, sensational performances above their usual level from almost the entire team, and a bunch of luck.

As it was they played slightly below their best level. The problem is that their best level is a lot lower than the media in the US was leading fans to believe. Meanwhile Belgium barely got out of second gear and still thrashed them. The US managed, I believe, two shots on target the whole game, a deflected free kick that would’ve been easy pickings if not for a freak change of direction, and a Balogun effort after the defender messed up. Other than that there was a Berhalter shot just wide and that was it. They offered nothing at all. People are just looking for excuses - oh if it wasn’t for the Balogun thing they’d have been better - rather than just accepting that the team really isn’t very good. In fact, I’d venture that without the Balogun thing they’d have been even worse because they’d have had to play Pepi up front who is a complete non entity. Balogun was the only player who looked vaguely like doing anything and gamely ran the channels.

The bigger picture here is that their three best players, Robinson, Balogun and Tilman are English, English and German respectively. Dest is Surinamese-Dutch. McKennie, Adams, Richards and Pulisic received their footballing education in Germany from 18, 19, 18 and 16 respectively, which means that the only players in that team that are both actually American and the products of US soccer are Ream, Freeman and Freese, two of which are objectively the worst players on the team.

I can’t even imagine England, Spain, Germany etc lining up with a half of team of foreigners and half a team of players who have never played any senior football in their home country. The US badly needs to sort out its youth football and stop scouting around other countries for players with any eligible link to their national team. But that will never happen because football in this country is purely for the upper middle and upper class.

I think you're over estimating USA massively there. Belgium have a far higher calibre of players. They've struggled against organised teams who sit off but they don't tend to lose important games unless it's against a high calibre opponent. Or at least someone better than USA.

They were outplayed by Senegal, but Senegal are a much stronger team than the USA.

Although yeah 4-1 is funny. Especially as Belgium are the weakest team left in that side of the draw.
 
Such a relief to have the country playing by its own rules get immediately dumped out and pleasing that it happened in a particularly embarrassing manner in the end.

It's left a major stain on the tournament but it would've been so much worse had they had enough to go any further.

Apparently Balogun and the Belgian coach Garcia had a chat after the game. Balogun acknowledged he shouldn't have been able to play as a red card means a suspension, but of course they went along with it.
 
4-1 immediately after cheating is something though, Canada and Mexico went out with more dignity.

They defended as well as they defend their bases in the Middle East

By all rights, this is really one of the biggest scandals in football history. The president of the host nation instructs the boss of the governing body to overturn a correct on-pitch decision purely in order to help the host nation win, and he gladly complies. There can be no greater level of corruption and sacrifice of the tournament's integrity. It's worse than bribery, it's an open declaration that politics will directly interfere with results and literally change them on a whim.

It's only because Trump is surrounded by non-stop scandals and insanity that there isn't more of a reaction. Nobody is surprised that he interfered with the WC brecause that's the kind of narcissistic lunatic he is. Imagine if the tournament had taken place in a decent, respected country and this had happened with a leader who isn't globally reviled. But the fact that the USA is currently a political cesspit doesn't lessen the magnitude of this historically unprecedented scandal. It just isn't unexpected.

They did lose to Slovakia at the last Euro, who are probably a bit worse than the states, but fair enough, they do tend to draw rather than actually get beat in recent years when they slip up against lower ranked teams. it's not a big deal and certainly Belgium were favourites... tbh there's only a few international teams these days where I'm that surprised if they get upset by a smaller team.

Its the fact that part-man part-scrotum crook Infantino was left humiliated. He's made himself (an even bigger) target of ridicule and ire from various nations, footballing governing bodies and pretty much every fan outside of the US, and on top of that Trump won't even be grateful considering the outcome wasn't the intended one. Now the US are dumped out he'll probably fire some parting shots at global football and be bored, not showing an ounce of gratitude to Infantino.

Essentially it was all for nothing.

I didn't get that either. Belgium doesn't have their golden generation anymore but this team is objectively better than the US one. Still think the US has assembled quite a decent team, probably the best I've seen from them.

You're right about the youth system, too. I think the people who argue that the US would be a "football super power" if it wanted to are seriously underestimating the sheer scale of European club football. In the city I live in, there are more than 100 football clubs and each of them averages 1-2 teams per age group. And for adults, there are 8 divisions between the highest (1. Bundesliga) and lowest (Kreisliga D) but the lower you go, the broader it gets. The lowest division for instance consists of 4 parallel leagues that compete with each other for promotions. Usually, you start earning money around the 8th or 7th division and earn enough to pay a small flat from the 5th divison upwards. I don't think the school based sports system the US runs stands a chance against such a machinery.

The whole feel good atmosphere for visitors that had been cultivated in the host cities and NT home base towns over the past month.

It was great PR for the US until reality hit everyone again about the US regime and FIFA :lol:
