The commentators said that at the end of the match.

Now if you are Southgate, why in hell would you not go and try win the game before pens?

He's an absolute monster isn't he.

What a signing he'll be for PSG.

If that stat is true then to a point you have to treat penalties as being 2-1 down. Donnaruma feels like he covers 90% of the goal even when he dives, the guy's huge.

No way that's true is it? Thats absurdly good. Even 50% would be amazing.

We should’ve made changes early and gone for the game, especially considering the attackers we had on the bench and the fact we are rubbish at pens.

Southgate let the game pass him by, similar to the Denmark game where we got a lucky pen

Probably never came up in all that research he's apparently been up to in the library. Southgate, Shakespeare, Wordsworth etc..

He's just a fanny who shat it in 96.

Southgate quote after the game: ‘’if we made attacking changes earlier, we might have lost the game during normal time’’.

Coward.

He's genuinely one of the biggest keepers that I've seen, it looks like he can reach either side of the post with ease from the centre. It's a bit strange as he doesn't seem to be freakishly tall for a keeper — he's 4 cm shorter than Courtois, for example, but he looks like he had been stretched in photoshop.

Deano Henderson. Saved 8 out 11. May not be true.

We really shouldn't have been playing for pens knowing his record at them. Very similar to the Ole De Gea decision. What a shite year.

I think commentators don't know maths. The stat I see is 15 saved from 44 (doesn't include today) which makes it 34%. Maybe the stat is only for penalty shootouts, not all pens though.

Mammoth of a keeper. Good decision to sit back and try to play for the pens by Southgate.

Playing for penalties against Donnarumma...

I'm reminded of Lippi in 2006 throwing on Iaquinta and Del Piero in extra time and going 4-2-4, trying to make sure Italy wouldn't end up in a shootout against the Germans in the semifinal.

Just wondering, does it also counts when the takers missed it, hitting the bar or off target etc?

He really said that?

As for the thread, that just sounds too absurd to be true.

Yeah he doesn't seem to understand that you can make like for like changes.

Imagine a fresh Rashford running at the slow, tired Italian defence instead of Sterling who could barely move.

Awful waste of a match there for the taking.

Southgate ran the biggest one man shitshow on earth today. Should've done everything to ensure the game doesn't go to pens. Yet he did the exact opposite.

Donnarumma could've been the best GK in the world for the next 15 years, I don’t understand why he went to PSG instead of a real club.

He will be the best goalkeeper in the world eventually if he isn't already.

68% save ratio? In his whole career or just for the national team?

If it's the former then it's the most bonkers football stat I've read.

He's really a top keeper. Shame he's a complete puppet for Raiola.

Would expect that to revert to the mean a bit over time.

It's his record in penalty shootouts. He's also won every penalty shootout he's ever participated in.
