They way people talk about Donny. Like him or dislike him, he's done literally nothing wrong at United. He was brought in against the managers wishes, never got to play, was loaned out, came back, still barely got to play, got a serious injury, and people talk about him like he's awful, he's one of our worst signings ever, there are people that almost seem happy he got hurt. He's never even had a proper shot, why do people have such strong feelings over a player that's done nothing wrong, seems like a good guy, and has probably been pretty fecked over by this club, or our previous manager, however you look at it.
I mean, I agree it's unfair and people being happy he's injured isn't on but also he's up there as far as our worst signings.

When he's played, he's been awful (whether that's his fault or not), at best he's been invisible. He cost £40 million so we should expect something but he runs around (I think because you barely see him) like he's won a contest to play at OT rather than a Premier League player. Mata was slow but at least he never hid from the ball whereas Donny is nowhere near the action at any point.

He's so strange, it's barely believable that he was a good player at Ajax. I'm sure he's actually just a good footballer and not suited to us or the league but he's been awful for us, legitimately truly terrible. Like the complaints about Sancho's mentality, strength and workrate but 100x as bad.

Aside from Casemiro he is by far our best midfielder. ETH knows how to get the best out of him and if ETH stays on as manager, I would like Donny to be given at least another season or 2 to prove himself. Still young enough to get 4-5 world-class years out of him.
Our second best midfielder based on *checks notes*, 2100 minutes of playing, 2 goals and two assists in three seasons at Old Trafford. How can you genuinely come up with such a take or you have a fine sense of irony that I'm failing to detect.

Agreed entirely. I don't have any personal animosity towards him as a player, I just think he's been a complete and utter waste of money. He's done absolutely nothing since joining and has been totally invisible when he has played. I feel for him a bit, to be honest, as he knows he's not up to the standard required so seems completely bereft of confidence and hides. At least Weghorst (who has also been poor and nowhere near the quality required) doesn't go missing, puts in a shift and continues to show for teammates.

This season is his season.
I know you jest. But you never know.

Last season was supposed to be his chance under his old manager, but then he got injured for the whole season.

2023/24 is effectively his first season under EtH at United part 2.0. I wouldn't bet against him becoming a squad player - particularly if we migrate to a proper 4-3-3.

VdB could potentially be decent as a Mount substitute. Donny is basically Mount-lite, so it's basically like for like.

He got his injury in January, and was as anonymous as ever every time he played before that.

If anything, he does not seem to be able to play in that proper 4-3 - 3. Being light-weight, weak defensively, and lacking passing range and ability prevent him from playing in that formation. His strength (if we can call it that) for us has always been inside the box. He is a more of second striker than Bruno is and people say Bruno can't play in 4 - 3 - 3.

Maybe he will come good playing with Mount and resting Bruno. He's good making quick passes in the box.

I don't personally think there's any future for him at the top level.

Yeah he did ok at Ajax, but he strikes me as one of those players who flops at United and then never does anything again. Like Kagawa, Buttner, Schneiderlin etc etc.

I'll be very surprised if i'm wrong

He's shown absolutely nothing in three seasons under three managers, so naturally the reaction here is that he deserves more time to turn it around. Small-time mentality.

He's far from the worst player United have signed, but close to being one of the worst signings all things considered.
