Ederson | Romano : Deal done

Ederson - United paying / paid £38m
Rashford - United unable to sell for £25m

Ederson - plays for Atalanta in SerieA, an extremely weak league, is not part of Brazil national team, no EPL experience. Is a defensive player, so typically should be cheaper than goal-scoring attackers, of even the same quality

Rashford - Part of an extremely competitive England World Cup team, that the likes of Cole Palmer didnt make. 13 goals and 11 assists for Barcelona! Only behind Yamal (31), and Lopez (25), ahead of Raphina (18), Torres (17), and Lewa (15), none of which would be sold for less than 80-90M, even Lewa probably at least 60-70.

Makes no sense whatsoever, unless you admit that United SUCKS at negotiations.
You’re trying to manufacture an argument

There is no comparison because it misses context - Rashford being in the ‘bomb’ squad because he wants out to Barca, and only Barca. Barca know this so they’re being pricks and trying to get the price down all the time. I think United have been right, they priced him to sell for Barca but it’s been thrown back in their face so they are holding firm with the thought of if Barca don’t want you we will sell you on the transfer market. They put the clause end date as the date the transfer market opens. No coincidence. United have made their intentions clear

“I’ve been fortunate enough to coach a lot of very good players,” Gasperini said in a press conference. “In terms of physicality, regains and the timing of his runs, Ederson is definitely an extraordinary player, one cut out for teams at the very highest level. It surprises me he still doesn’t play for Brazil, even if he’s often been called up. But that’ll come.”

Honestly, I think Ederson will be a hard sell for our fans who used to shit on Fred so much (and I consider Fred a better player from what I've seen Ederson play, admitedly in youtube clips). I have nothing against this transfer but only because he will be part of the package of hopefully 3 midfielders, and also the club seems to know what it's doing with transfers recently. Still smells a bit of Ten Hag signing, who seemed to be building a team for Serie A rather than epl.

If you actually watch him over time, he’s better than Fred without question.

The massive wages Rashford is on is what is causing the lower fees for him. Ederson's probably on like £80k/week whereas Rashford's on £325k/week. Loads of clubs would love Rahford but there's only a select few that can afford to pay him - Barca, Bayern, Arsenal. Even a relatively wealthy club like Villa who I'm sure would like to have him back probably can't afford to pay him that much due to financial regulations. Any Italian or non-PSG French teams forget it.

Not an “extremely weak league” is it. It’s one of the stronger ones. Just not what it used to be. Atalanta have actually managed to win a European trophy in the last 5 years, unlike ourselves.

Why is the medical in July?
There's chat that it could well mean we push this deal into the new year while freeing up a bit of money if we want to complete another transfer within this years books. Could possibly indicate trying to strong arm West Ham on Fernandes

I will take this as an optimistic view for the future, and of course he gets a blank card on day one here. But also to clarify, I think Fred would've been a good squad player, the problem was for us he was a starter. I will also not judge Ederson against Mainoo / whoever else comes for Casemiro, as he will be part of the supporting cast. Which again, I have no problem with.

Interesting. Cheers.

That Gasparini quote about Ederson is all the confirmation we fans should need about this signing.

what did he say?

I was a huge fan of Fred. Very underrated player imo.

He was never a 6 and that was the issue. Most of our managers failed to use him properly. He was an 8 with unbelievable cardio. He never had the awareness around him to play as a 6.

In his final season playing just ahead of Casemiro, he was absolutely fantastic and very close to being our player of the season.

I've watched a fair bit of Ederson and he is a level above Fred.

The season they won the EL he was one of the best midfielders in Europe. I wanted him that summer and am shocked its taken this long for him to get a big move.

Poor Fred, our one man midfield who got ripped to bits anytime he made even a stray pass or got dispossessed. McTominay can't play ball or break up play at all. While Fred gave us his best years doing both and gave it everything and got nothing but abuse for it. Extraordinary player who would have looked brilliant at Liverpool or City at the time. Thats a hill I'll gladly die on.

I think ederson is much stronger but less expansive with his passing and more one footed. His strength and good ball control (it actually looks quite unorthodox but it's clearly effective) should make him a solid pl player with lots of scope to improve in the right setup. I'm happy with this one for the price. I genuinely think he'll become a Brazil regular after this World Cup

Which is exactly why I think Ederson will be a hard sell. He was very unpopular amongst United fans, to say mildly, but he was quite was quite alright for us. And we did hit a very high level with him in midfield a few times (like when he played with Casemiro vs Barca). On other occasions he was erratic with his touch and pass, that has to be said.

Ederson looks a bit clumsy on the ball, and not in full control of what he's doing, but he might as well be an effective player as long as he plays to his strengts. But him not looking "easy on the eye" with the ball at his feet is the main reason I think he will have hard time from the fans here.

At least his chant will be an easy one. Won't have to get the thinking or creative hats on.

Can't wait for him to make Rice look like sh***.
Loving the creativity behind the user name! But might want to request a change at this point.

Back to Ederson, yep, the chant writes itself. Will it be better than Anderson or Kleberson though?

Whether that is a reason or an excuse, is in the eyes of a beholder. Plenty of top players have fallen out with their clubs at United and elsewhere in the past (including the likes of Beckham and Keane, who butted heads so badly with Sir Alex that had to be removed within days) but clubs have managed to take care of the situation without letting somebody rip them a second asshole financially

If he were not on massive wages, his fee should be at elast 50-60 millions, not 25. So that was already included in the price. As for taking a wage-cut, I am sick and tired of hearing how Rashford has all of the power. He only does if you fold. How about, stick him with the reserves for a season and see how he changes his tune? They could have threatened that especially past season where he clearly wanted to make the world cup squad (and to his credit did make it). He wouldn't have made jack shit if he wasn't playing, would have?

That is exactly the part where United have no balls and are shit negotiators - allowong Barca and Rashford to dictate the terms

But they’re not. They are refusing to sell him below what was agreed. As i stated previously, the date that the Barcelona clause expires is the date the transfer window opens. That’s symbolic and shows United’s intention if Barcelona don’t keep up their end of the deal

No idea if any good, delighted to be improving the midfield. At least one more needed for there.

Comparisons to Fred have me concerned though he was an awful midfielder all things considered

Right. I hope they stick to their guns and don't fold this time. That is all I want, as well. To see our club owners having some teeth. We will know, soon, how it ends, I guess

A good point

pretty good shout right there with the mention that a deal won't be completed until the new fiscal year for Ederson especially considering we've just pocketed 38m from Napoli for Hojlund

that extra bit of cash helps the budget for this term to make a deal before the end of the month.....certainly seems to point towards a deal for Fernandes

Just realised I didn't react to this signing yet. First off welcome to Manchester United Ederson! I think he'll be a pretty good signing tbh. I expect he'll play more than people think.

As mentioned he's physically very good. I think the versatility he brings is the main reason we wanted hm, and I see a similar pattern with Mateus Fernandes. I think we wanted 2 midfielders who could play both alongside and instead of Mainoo. As someone who was sceptical of the Ugarte signing I don't really think they're very similar tbh.

First of all Ederson is miles better than Ugarte on the ball and technically. Even if Ugarte had managed to bring the best of his out of possession assets to Utd, his technical limitations were always going to result in mistakes and losing the ball regularly.

The area I thought Ugarte needed to improve, which I could potentially have seen him developing was his defensive positioning, since he has always been a pitbull that chases everything without any regard for the big gaps he leaves behind him. Unfortunately he didn't develop this side of his game, and basically made him an instant disaster for us anytime he came on the pitch. Ederson similarly presses a lot but he's a lot more defensively disciplined in his positioning. Mainoo has really developed this side of his game and knows when to stay back to keep us defensively compact, so I could see them working quite well together.

I'm not sure if I'd quite go so far as to say he's like Bruno Guimaraes. If you were to say Ederson is a 7/10 in everything, I think you'd have to say Bruno G is an 8 or 9 in everything, so that's setting expectations a bit too high imo.

I actually think he's far more similar to Tonali, who imo is probably the most overrated midfielder in the Premier League (that doesn't mean he's bad). For me Tonali brings all the athletic positives of Ederson while not being any better on the ball (if anything Ederson's probably more agile and better at carrying the ball forward). So considering we were linked with Tonali a lot, I'd look at this signing as getting the same type of player for less than half the price (though admittedly a few years older).

The price is reasonable (not great considering he only had 1 year left on his contract), but if we were to spend this without the context of his contract expiry date, it would be a bit below his actual worth imo. Add Mateus Fernandes who I really like the look of honestly, and that's very good business imo. Are either of them as good as Casemiro? No. That was why I was so against letting Cas go, because unless we got Elliot Anderson or Tchouameni, we were always going into next season with a weaker starting midfield 2 (though Kobbie may continue to improve which might help). I think I've finally gotten past that disappointment and accepted the reality.

With that in mind I'm excited to see those 2 join Kobbie and I'm fully expecting a 3rd to join, even if I don't see it being the big name people were hoping for. Mateus Fernandes represents a technically excellent player who can develop a lot. I think the 3rd name will become clear after the World Cup once Anderson and Tchouameni are firmly off the list (you gotta try while there's still any hope at getting them).

Can't be true.
According to experts on here he's slow AF.

No one's saying he's slow mate. The complaints are that the on the ball stuff (first touch, ball carrying, passing technique) are all a bit mid. Off the ball he seems fine.

Fred was literally at one point in contention for player of the season near the end. The amount of hate that Fred gets because he had to get shoe-horned into a 6 and play alongside McTominay who was awful by his own rights in his tenure here is incredible.

Also how many times do people need to be reminded that Ederson's comp is "Good version of Fred" and not just Fred as a whole.

It's looking more and more like INEOS are seriously tight lipped when it comes to transfers. Between the Ederson deal progressing this rapidly without much notice and the fact that there seems to have been already serious leg work done on the Mateus Fernandes deal based on Stone's report this afternoon.

Go back and read the thread.
Plenty were saying it.
If you can't be bothered then don't comment on it.

Not sure I follow his reasoning. It makes little difference to United as the buying club, and for West Ham, their new financial year started 1st June.
No expert my side, but PSR rules (year end) cuts off 30 June. So maybe that's the reference to WHU?

On topic, had no idea Ederson was decent in the air. Seems we're trying hard to replace some of Casemiro's goals as well

That’s worrying if it turns out to be true. Fred was an overpriced mediocre midfielder that offered very little outside of running.

PSR has ended, the replacement scheme SCR doesn't have the same fixed date (fallout from the Leicester dispute). Besides, whatever the cut off date, West Ham need the extra income next season, when their income falls, not this season.
