Elliot Anderson | Athletic: United's main target

Since when?
Exactly - he might well go there, but there are numerous 'top' clubs in for him, including (allegedly) Madrid, City Might (as unlikely as it seems given their political connections get a transfer ban following the charges, Pep isn't guaranteed to stay at City and it's conceivable whoever takes over after him might relatively struggle. United have sold players to Forest recently too: NFFC will sell to whoever offers the best price or accept offers at equivalent value and let Anderson decide, whilst in this case Ortega went cheap because he was 3rd choice.

Semenyo went to City because United turned him down earlier in the year, because United were in a relative slump when they came back in for him & and seemed far less likely to get CL than City at the time, and because his other non-Utd option was Spurs. It doesn't mean City automatically get any player that they ask for, however successful (and corrupt) they are. People just want to wallow in fatalism half the time.

They are 2nd in the league and yet he is among the worst defensive stats in the league for his position and only has 4 goals and 4 assists. I imagine he can improve, but we really cannot afford a project. If he was smashing it in the championship then I would feel very different
Forest had a bid for him knocked back over the weekend according to the papers....maybe they see him as a replacement for Anderson who they know is gone in the summer

He's City bound sadly.

Part of the reason they have sold Ortega to them in this window is to help them get Anderson in the summer.

Disappointing, if true. I've considerably cooled on Baleba this season and there aren't many others out there.

I don’t take anything Merson says seriously and I often find it crazy that someone who played professional football is so clueless about football, Wharton would be a great signing IF we didn’t have Mainoo and Wharton has too many similar characteristics to Mainoo whilst Anderson offers a lot of what Casemiro does which is what is needed.

It’s no secret that Baleba hasn’t been as good as he was last season but I’d go with Anderson and Baleba over Wharton because they offer things that we need, it’s about getting the midfield balance right so Anderson and Baleba or someone who offers what an in form Baleba does alongside Mainoo and maybe Neves on a free is perfectly balanced.

Merson can't seem to make up his mind on us unsurprisingly. On one hand he'll keep reminding people that 'its Man United' and we're massive and should have the highest standards, and the next week he'll say it's 20 years since we were a big club and we shouldn't have delusions of grandeur, can't attract top players etc.

Either way you can't win with the prick.

I think you could argue that Anderson is closer more athletic version of Mainoo than Casemiro, I don't think he's particularly like either though.

I really think he's the most old school CM I've seen in modern times around the league. I hate bringing up Keane as a comparison because of obvious reasons, but Anderson's style really reminds me of him. Good athlete, runs a ton, very good out of possession, and in possession can do a bit of everything while always being clean and forward thinking with his passing. Most of the time in today's game midfielders are more like specialists, but he's someone that would have slotted right into a 90's era 442 midfield partnership.

Yea a young Keane though, not one that sits in front of th defence, but one who is very active everywhere, which is why I say he's closer to an athletic Mainoo.

We would need someone next to him to sit in front of the defence.

Do you think Berge could do that or wrong profile?

Wharton is nothing Like Mainoo two completely different profiles .

I mean if he is using the league position as a stick to beat up Anderson, Wharton is only better off by 2 places or 3 points.

I said last summer we should spend that 60m on him. Now it will be more and difficult. Never understood why we only „pushed“ for Baleba

Do you think Berge could do that or wrong profile?
Wish we had gone for Berger instead of Ugarte, a fraction of the price and would suit our squad so much better.

Regarding Anderson, we must do everything we can to get him. Hopefully we get into the Top 5, with that and the rumors of Pep leaving, there's some hope. He's my absolute No.1 choice.

Failing that we can go for Baleba. Like others have mentioned, Wharton will be too similar-ish to Kobbie. We need more of a physical presence in midfield.

We will have a kings ransom to spent in the summer, I think we are a very desirable club to come to now.

Our squads very very good, and we are starting to really get momentum, City will lose Pep, Liverpool aren't as appealing now I think and Arsenal are set piece FC I think we really can get great players this summer to flesh out the squad

Hope that Pep does leave city and that might make Anderson less likely to choose them and more likely us instead.

I really hope he's wearing our colours next season. Prem proven and perfectly fills the void that will be left when Casemiro departs.

I think Elliot and Berge would be a great pair of signings, Elliot replacing Casemiro and Berge for Ugarte. Much cheaper pair, and would leave more money for a good left or right back. Have always liked Berge and thought he was Fulham's best player against us

I would be happy with Anderson, Berge and Neves on a free which is more than doable finance wise but I do think Baleba will be far cheaper than Brighton quoted last summer as he’s actually gone backwards this season and there’s no way Brighton are getting anything above £70 million for him so long term Baleba is the better buy.

We have so much to spend in the summer we can easily get Baleba, Anderson AND 2 other top quality players IMO.

If Arsenal win the PL this season, then it will be 3 different winners in 3 years.

So the monopoly City had on the PL has been broken slightly...making this transfer very much possible for any of the CL teams.*

*Hopefully, that includes United

We’ll surely get one of Anderson or Wharton, and I’d be happy with either. Plus a midfielder with a different profile. Anderson would tick more boxes, though

On a side note, ugh, Liverpool, City and Arsenal winning titles. The only way it could get worse is if Leeds get bought by a sugar daddy.

Is Baleba the better buy if he then continues this seasons form with us?

I see Anderson to city, Wharton to pool and we will take the risk with Baleba

Mateus Fernandes should also be in that conversation for United if you're just thinking about promising young PL midfielders.

Username checks out.

Wharton and Anderson are very different players. It's like comparing Carrick to Keano.

It would be insane to make baleba our main signing at 6. If he is signed alongside someone else that might be OK but still suspect brighton will value him at more than he is worth.

I like Anderson and Wharton but would hope we are also looking at targets around Europe

I feel like Baleba is more or less going to be our player in the summer. We have been tracking him for some time and he wants to join us. None of the big 5 seem to be in for him or need him for that matter.

For the second midfielder, what would be the preference if we can sign Anderson for 100m or sign Mateus Fernandes and Bouaddi for 50m each.

Keeping in mind that the Premier League is won by squads and not just first 11s.

Really feel like people in here are setting themselves up for a fall. He will be the most coveted midfielder in the PL this summer and we are not going to win out unless he’s a fan or connected to us somehow via family, imo. That’s why it’s a waste of energy lining him up as The One. He may turn out to be that, but it won’t be for us.

What could be an ace is actually Carrick. Anderson is of the age to have studied Carrick and see him win everything. Perhaps that can have some sway.
