Elliot Anderson | Athletic: United's main target

I feel like Baleba is more or less going to be our player in the summer. We have been tracking him for some time

If United have been tracking him for some time then hopefully they will have noticed that his performances have been hugely underwhelming this season and bringing him in as their Casemiro replacement is perhaps not the best idea.

Really feel like people in here are setting themselves up for a fall. He will be the most coveted midfielder in the PL this summer and we are not going to win out unless he’s a fan or connected to us somehow via family, imo. That’s why it’s a waste of energy lining him up as The One. He may turn out to be that, but it won’t be for us.

What could be an ace is actually Carrick. Anderson is of the age to have studied Carrick and see him win everything. Perhaps that can have some sway.
If we make CL, I think we’ll be a very attractive destination for midfielders. With Casemiro going and possibly Ugarte too, there’s an automatic starting role for him here.

Liverpool and City are the obvious rivals but City will start to have question marks especially with Pep’s future. Liverpool I’m hoping don’t make CL and that will give us a clear advantage over them.

The audition between now and the end of the season is just not for Carrick but also for us to make ourselves attractive to players. Based on how we’ve played so far under Carrick, I think players would love to play here. Also helps as a CM having Bruno in front of you.

I do agree we should open ourselves to the possibility he’ll go elsewhere but whenever we’ve looked competitive we’ve rarely struggled to land our guy especially if RM and Barca aren’t involved.

If Chelsea make CL then I see them bidding for him just for the sake of it. He’ll, they’ll probably bid if they finish outside.

Not the best links but Anderson is definitely the kind of midfielder we need as well as someone like Baleba, those two together would be a very balanced pairing.
Unless we get UCL you have no hope in getting anderson even still gonna be hard with city most likely in the race ready to chuck whatever the asking price is at them and pay high wages. As for Baleba i think we should steer clear of him his form this season has been shocking which shows a poor mentality dont need anymore time wasters in the squad when trying to do YET ANOTHER rebuild.

I think this would be a very, very smart signing. Also alignes with the EPL experience (See Cunha and Mbuemo).
Saw him live in Riga, really reminds me of Carrick.

Pep fecking off would exponentially increase the chance, for sure. Guy’s The Pied Piper for this generation of players.

Agree we’ve got to play well and qualify for the CL as the bare minimum, but Anderson is the one player I see every single club going for, even Chelsea and Arsenal, so it’ll be a coup to pull this one off.

Can someone find the post that says Athletic has him as United’s #1 target so I can threadmark it? Been back 4 pages to no avail.

Athletic state Anderson is United’s #1 target New

Sorry, it was in the deal sheet this morning.

They are expected to be in the market for not just one but two midfielders, with Casemiro’s exit confirmed and Ugarte’s future uncertain. Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are all hugely admired, with Anderson considered their first-choice target.

Agree about Carrick. They also come from the same schoolboys set up as well. Wallsend Boys Club.

Let’s hope it has some kind of influence, however small.

I think Carrick is a big draw for a certain subset and Anderson definitely falls into that, even more so with the Wallsend thing, which I didn’t know about!

Anderson is the best one to get from the three, but I'd be happy with any of them. I'm not sure Wharton is really an alternative, though, as he's quite different to Anderson/Baleba.

UCL football will almost certainly be required and even then, we'd still have a battle to persuade him that we're a better option than City.

I have not seen him play, so I'm just looking at the stats: is he a DM? He seems to have very good defensive stats and is also fairly safe in possession. But he does get dispossessed 3x as often as other DMs (Casemiro, Rodri, Rice etc), but that might of course be down to him playing for a worse team. If you receive a poor pass under pressure, then you will lose possession almost no matter how good you are.

I'm so jaded, I have a feeling we will go for these big names, their clubs will quote 100M+, end we will end up going for someone like Rabiot by the end of the summer

I would say he's pretty all action, but positionally very sound. I think he could probably play a couple of different roles and would compliment Mainoo extremely well - he's the passer that Mainoo isn't and got the legs/defensive part to help out. Not sure if that translate to the larger spaces in a more dominant team, but it's not a huge worry for me. He'd be my first choice and I'd also get Baleba. I'd look for someone a bit more expansive in their passing/dribbling as well to cover all bases.

Issue is right, we are 100% losing Casimiro and ideally Ugarte in the summer and will be in some form of european competition.

We need 2 top end midfielders to replace Casimiro and ugarte and improve the midfield before we even talk about depth so that is 3 CMs needed. how to we address that in 1 window.

Christ almighty, what with this club. We know we need midfielders, we know Ugarte isn't good enough, we know that Casemiro is leaving (They know the full reason, we don't but can assume the wages he would want wouldn't match the view of the club).
All we hear about is the club is monitoring this player, monitoring that player, but it won't be until the final week or two of the transfer window when we will actually try and get someone. Why can't they negotiate now? Get them in before the world cup? Why is transfer dealings so hard to comprehend for this club. Man City have their targets bought nearly before we hear about them.

Also, what is our Scouting department actually doing? They are picking out names EVERYONE knows about? Why can't we find the Baleba's before they go to Brighton, why aren't we finding the Andersons and Whartons before they go somewhere else.

It's like going to the supermarket where tomatoes are low on stock, you pay ridiculous prices when you can easily go get seeds and grow them yourself.

Apologies for the rant. But just sick of hearing who we are "monitoring" but yet we have a scouting department seemingly going under the radar. We are paying for mistakes on transfers from yesterday, so money right now (PSR and FFP), we can't afford mistakes that will set us back. So the scouts need to get a finger out and do their job.

Could be a very slow start to the summer window if he waits until after the World Cup before making a decision.

Looking at rivals for him - Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all fairly well stocked in midfield and definitely have bigger priorities elsewhere.

City are quite well stocked but can see them going for him as they buy anyone!

If we get CL I think he’s ours

Publicly stating he’s our number one summer target seems dumb. Marinakis who is a tough business man will be rubbing his hands and squeezing every penny out of us. I really don’t understand why we feel the need to tell the world who our main target is.

Couldn't agree more. Just feels like a big money transfer that has disaster written all over it. He hasn't just been poor, he has been diabolical. Getting regularly subbed at half time for a mid table side is not a good look. People say his head was turned but that showed weak mentality

Very strange rant to have about the club, especially after the last year.

We signed Dorgu and Lammens, players who many people hadn’t even heard of 6 months before we signed them and they were bought for very reasonable fees.

Also seems a bit weird to have a go at the scouting department for ready made PL players when it’s worked so far with Mbeumo and Cunha. I’d argue we should be making more signings of that ilk and Anderson fits perfectly with that.

Maybe we want to turn his head a bit towards us.

In any case, every football fan and his mother knows we need at least 2 top tier midfielders in the summer. So we can’t really hide this interest whatever we say or don’t say publicly.

He would be my pick out of the 3. He always wants the ball and is calm under pressure. Very mobile and a good dribbler.

Makes you wonder why Newcastle picked him out of all the players to get rid of to help with PSR, especially when they paid 20m for Vlachodimos in return.

Good player massively overpriced and better options is my personal feeling. Ceiling of other targets is much higher but for dips making them less popular currently...Baleba a prime example who though also ovrpriced offers far more for us progressing I feel

Did you see what we spent in the summer? We aren't backed by an oil state and are short of cash. We need Casemiro off the books, Sancho finally gone, and money coming in the summer for Rashford, Hojlund and maybe others (Ugarte). Not hard to comprehend surely? January is notiously difficult to buy targets and Forest arent out of the woods regarding relegation.

We signed Ayden Heaven for 1m, picked up Lammens from Royal Antwerp and Sedou Kone could be an example of 'Baleba before they go to Brighton'. Basically you need to settle yourself.

We didn't state anything. It's obvious anyway.

There is going to be a bidding war anyway. Forest will squeeze every penny out of the buyer anyways.

Mateus Fernandes could be the slightly cheaper alternative to him as well if we are insistant on going for PL proven route along with Baleba who I believe would be other midfield signing .

I can see all of them bar maybe chelsea spending big on a midfielder this summer.

I love Wharton on the ball but his lack of mobility scares the feck out of me for the price Palace will want.
Any player is effective as long as they are in a system which is built around their strengths and which protects them from their weaknesses. Take most of United's pundits as an example. Most of them would have been mid table players (Gaz, Phil, Butt) if it wasn't for SAF who built a team which allowed them to play at the highest level. He did so not because of the kindness of his heart but because they happened to have skills that complimented the squad. That's something United post SAF (especially Amorim) seem to have ignored.

If we sign Wharton then we will dictate tempo. However we'll need to surround him with runners and player with a certain level of athleticism around him. Signing Anderson will mean building a team around mobility and aggressiveness. We're already positioned on that with the likes of Mbuemo but we'll need more players like that. Neither player will sort United CM on their own which makes me wonder whether spending 80-100m for one of them is worth.

Who is a reasonable target who is better? He is going toe to toe with the very best in the PL. He is only 23 too. I think in terms of his defensive traits, coupled with his overall play, there aren’t too many viable options better than him.

He is a much better footballer than Baleba.

Mateus Fernandes is somebody who is pretty good not better currently but wouldnt be far off from Him in future .
