Elliot Anderson | Athletic: United's main target

That would be an insane midfield 3. And with mainoo aswell. All depends if Bruno is staying or not though.

Baleba is a huge question mark still. Don't see either Anderson nor him as an improvement on current level Case

lovely jubbly

rumours of Goretzka too - would be nice as a 4th MC - experienced, professional etc
He’s fallen off a cliff. And it was a pretty short cliff at that

How much have you watched of Baleba?!...
Last seasons baleba is probably what we’ll be getting. This season his heads been wobbled obviously. And he’s still very young to become a quality midfielder

Them 2 behind Bruno would be a massive improvement.. in terms on general play. I mean replacing Casemiro is goin to be very hard because he brings goals and vision and aerial threat.

Where does Kobbie play then?

Didnt we say the same about Sanchez, Sancho etc?

Guehi was told last minute that he wouldn't get his transfer yet he still played. Of course every person reacts different, but I feel someone who has his head wobbles due to a failed transfer a bit worrying.

I have not seen him play, so I'm just looking at the stats: is he a DM? He seems to have very good defensive stats and is also fairly safe in possession. But he does get dispossessed 3x as often as other DMs (Casemiro, Rodri, Rice etc), but that might of course be down to him playing for a worse team. If you receive a poor pass under pressure, then you will lose possession almost no matter how good you are.
He's box to box (all over the pitch).

Somewhere between a young Gerrard and a very young Roy Keane (when Keane, too, was at Forest). I keep using the Keane comparison, at Forest, because it's that similar.

I'd pay whatever it takes to get him. Then take a Wharton/Baleba (or Neves apparently) as the second.

They were all at different stages in their career. He's a young lad, probably not on a big wage, seeing that he has to play a whole season again to earn his big move - that's if Brighton don't price him out of it again. A lot can happen in a season, injuries, alternatives can appear, more pressure is added to his performances. I don't think it's a huge worry if you like his profile.

There's no guarantee you get the Anderson of this season either, transfers are always gambles, so you just have to look at what attracted you to them in the first place and do they still show those same attributes. I think Baleba does when you watch him and especially true in AFCON.

I don’t understand this negative narrative of us standing no chance if City decide they want Anderson as look at some of the players who have signed for City over the past 5-6 years when massively hyped as a sure fire superstar only to see themselves struggling for minutes then moved on or used as back up, for us Anderson becomes our main man in midfield and a very important player rather than just another player.

Bringing in Baleba as a squad player isn’t a bad idea and he’s a different profile to Anderson not to mention Mainoo and Neves who we’re apparently interested in on a free too, it’s about variety and balance and if those are our main four options for two spots next season then I’d be very happy with those options.

People are just realistic. If City really go for him he’s more likely to go then them than us, as has been reported. Money talks and they’ll pay far higher wages and are more likely to win trophies. Just look at Semenyo recently. Years of mismanagement and we’re paying the price.

Hope
Where does Kobbie play then?
Hopefully we don't play a game every 10 days (on average) next season. Meaning even if we get 2 starting midfielders, Mainoo is getting plenty of playing time. In fact even with game-a-week model we're crying for depth in midfield so that is the last problem to worry about.

Where does Kobbie play then?
We shouldn't give Kobbie any special treatment. We need two starting midfielders, even now he's not at the required level and I know this isn't popular opinion right now his passing range or mobility would need to significantly improve to get there.

He will be a fan favourite in no time if he joins us. It would be incredible to have him here, but I think it's crucial that we get to CL and can sell him the idea of being our "Keane". Not sure he'll go to City knowing Pep won't be there for much longer.

Not sure if that argument works if you instead don't have a permanent manager.

I think in the end we'll need to break the budget for him, promise starting spot and hope other clubs are settled in midfield. He seems to be considered "low risk" transfer (even for a big fee), so I still suspect other clubs to be in for him. Even City, just for the kicks.

I rate him highly but he can't sort that CM on his own. I can't think of anyone who could tbh. That's what is expected from a 100m player.
There's not a single 100m player that can do that. There never has been tbh, even Madrid had to buy Kroos AND Modric before they were set in midfield.

Not to mention 80-100m isn't even a huge fee these days for what you get.

Yeah arsenal needed zubimendi to play with rice who cost 100 million. That player just does not exist.

This has been our problem. Anderson won't solve anything on his own, we need 2 top quality starting midfielders signed. We always make a big signing in one position and expect them to solve everything.

Forest won't entertain selling him now. There's a chance to get 25% more if he has a successful WC, and still retain his current value if he'll be just Ok-ish.

I heard this peddled a lot on here but I don’t think it’s necessarily that simple.

You could flip it and say Forest may want to sort it before the WC as 1) after a long season of domestic and European football he could go to the World Cup and do his ACL, likely ruining their chances of getting close to a 9 figure fee ever again for him. 2) it also disrupts Forest’s own summer transfer plans and impacts their ability to get possible targets and get them in early for pre-season.

I could be wrong and given the Forest owner’s volatile, irrational nature I probably will end up being wrong. But if I was Forest I’d be playing it safe and getting it done early, which I think would be both Anderson and our preference too.

No one knows if guardiola is staying beyond the end of this season. If the new manager decides Anderson isn't the player he wants....

Have to remember as well that the last time we finished above City someone like Anderson was 9 or 10 years old. Anyone under 25 will have grown up with a very different opinion of City and how the compare to us.

If we really want him we’ll have a chance but we would clearly be outsiders if City want him.

People forget this a lot. Anyone under 25 sees city as a much more successful side than us. We're history before they can even remember

Watching the game exclusively with eyes on him and he just got absolutely cooked by the Leeds LB haha

Which 2 of the prime candidates offer the best balance as a pair?

He was dropping back to make up for the defence being split apart and couldn't get any where near a rebound off the keeper. Hardly being "cooked".

I know what incident ManhattanRed was referring to. You must have missed it or misunderstood.

There was an event where Anderson was 1 vs 1 in the RB position against the Leeds LB Gudmundsson who had the ball. Gudmundsson turned on the gas and dribbled round the outside of Anderson to get to the byline for a cross, leaving him for dead.

Nothing to do with keepers or rebounds.

I can see a world where Forrest go down and he’s much cheaper.

West Ham beat Burnley tomorrow and it’s only 3 pts.

Yup thats exactly what I was talking about, thanks !

100m would be the joint 8th biggest fee EVER, how is that not a huge fee? It maybe doesn't feel huge because every standard PL player gets quoted at a minimum of 50m, but it is still huge. The PL fees are absurd, Strand-Larsen for 50m, what are we doing here?!

Strand Larsen for 50m shows that 100m for one of the best rated PL CMs who is at the perfect age to buy isn’t a huge fee, relatively speaking. The all time list doesn’t mean much because transfer fees have gone absolutely mental in the past year, and that’s the market we’re now shopping in. And in that market Wirtz and Isak type fees are the really huge ones.

No way a 100 mill footballer. Not even close. Make that half and it might be fair value. Neither him nor Baleba or that Wharton guy are good enough to replace Case.

One of the best CMs in the league for two seasons straight and you think he is worth 50m?

Strand Larsen fee just shows a poor deal. You can’t (and we shouldn’t) base other players on that.
