Elliot Anderson | Athletic: United's main target

That depends on whether there will be a bidding round, I think. If 3-4 teams all make offers for him it could rise above 100 rather quickly, even if they do go down.

Bidding wars like this don't really happen because Forest can't force him to leave for a club he doesn't want to join.

He'll have a preferred destination, and as long as their bid comes in around the valuation, it doesn't really matter if another club comes in and offers more.

I'm fairly sure Newcastle offered more for Mbeumo than we did, but he didn't want to go there.

There's no way he goes for 100m if they go down.

I think if Forest do go down, whoever buys him has to act before the World Cup. If England do well (I think theres a good chance they win it), and he's a starter his value will skyrocket.
In many circumstances I would agree with you.

But for Anderson, there are only two clubs who are in a position to buy him; United and City.

I don’t see Real or Barca being interested; Arsenal and Chelsea don’t need him. Liverpool at a stretch. For everyone else, he’s already out of reach.

I think Liverpool are a very reasonable possibility.

City being linked with Nmecha from Dortmund so maybe there is a bit of hope

Didn't Everton have the option to extend for 1 year?

Regardless, if United were seriously interested in the manner they seem to be with Anderson, one would have thought they'd have been in Garner's ear already about a possible move.

The fact that Garner signed a new contract suggests to me that serious interest from United wasn't there, as he's basically priced himself out of a move.

Yup. Under Glazers we missed on many of these "market opportunities". INEOS have gotten a lot better at this (see the recent Gibbs-White links for example and the relegation release clause). So I guess for whatever reason we just decided he wasn't the guy.

How good is Elliot Anderson? Is he worth the 60-70mil it will take to grab him from Forest?

I don't see him making that much difference. There's a difference between being a player who makes a difference, and player who simply replaces existing players.

I'm assuming he is far, far, far better than Ugarte. Is he better than Kobie Mainoo?

I haven't watched him closely, but I just think we need to make sure we do not follow hype.

Brentford, Brighton.. Bournemouth..they all seem to be able to find players of good quality without going nuts with the chequebook.

Manchester United do not always have to buy only big-name players.

Yes, he's significantly better than Mainoo. He is a fully developed PL CM with a very rounded game outside of goalscoring. He would be a major asset for us and likely our best CM since Carrick.

This link appearing now is so funny to me.

Over the weekend I watched a couple of games of his and was pretty impressed. He would rank pretty highly for versatile 8 options I think United should consider. He provides a bit of the dynamism which United seemed to lack in midfield with Mainoo and Casemiro vs Palace.

I also think he would make an ideal partner for Anderson tbh. Andersoner deep-lying playmaker, Nmecha quick box-to-box. Both get stuck in and neither have any huge flaws in their games. Both also solid in the air.

Would suck if City got them both...

He's significantly better until he comes here and people realise how good Mainoo actually is...

Mainoo has improved significantly under Carrick but he's really levels below Anderson, and that's fine - it's where he is up to in his development.

I’m not sure if he’s the right player for us or not, not fully sold on him. This idea however that if City are in for him then he’s sure to go to them needs to die. We’ve beaten them to signings in recent times. If we get CL football then we have as good a chance as anybody.

He’s been pretty openly homophobic and transphobic in the past on social media. Having Jim associated with us is bad enough already.

Also a City youth product currently impressing at Dortmund. Let's not go down that road again ey ..

i don't think City would be looking to bring in them both....probably an alternative to Anderson if he chooses to turn them down

Unlike Sancho (and Kagawa and Mikhi) he does actually have the required pace, strength and intensity for the PL though.

Fair enough. I've barely seen him play so can't really comment. His highlight reel looks promising.

He seemed to enjoy scoring against City this evening. Likely clutching at straws, but maybe his mind isn't made up?

United would still need to qualify for CL though...

Yeah would be surprised if it isn't and that goal has probably strengthened City's hopes of signing him

He’s one of the best midfielder in the league right now and is miles ahead of Mainoo

Mainoo is one of the most overrated player in the team right now. He’s young and developing and honestly quite far off from being one of the best midfielder in the league.

I'd pay 130m for him if I had to. It won't come to that, obviously, but the point I'm making is that yes, he is "that" good -- as good as midfielder as you can buy, given age profile, and so forth, in football.

Easily justifies the 100m price tag. And if people don't believe that then just wait until the summer when it happens re supply/demand (worth on market). But with him it's not just hype. He'll be great for a decade for whomever he signs with imo, I just hope it's us.

He can be as good with the ball as he likes, if he can't turn up, work relentlessly or keep up with the opposition midfielders, it's all pointless.

What is Elliot so good at, to warrant spending £100m ?

We'll go balls deep into this one, I can see us getting 100m ready to land him. It cannot be understated how much we need mobile #8 at the moment.

Get him and Tonali in please. Honestly think just getting in 2 dynamic midfielders into the squad solidifies us as a top 4 team and allows us to build the rest of the squad for a title challenge.

Yeah. No manager, not even Enrique, would get this team anywhere with the midfield we have.

That’s probably £160-170m and a protracted long winded wait, we absolutely must be looking at both these players with others like stiller, Camavinga, Wharton, Valverde, however we should go get Joao Gomez for £40m as a third midfielder and get that one done as early as possible. I don’t think fans realise just how bad this area of the squad is right now!

He scored against City last night, he’s not worth £100m but nor was Caciedo or Rce the current market is crazy for technically good players and he’s definitely one of those, the only way he comes to United is that city get a transfer Ban.

City will spend 100m on him after scoring past them last night
