Elliot Anderson | City agree fee up to £130m

Well done that man.

We had the pick of the litter for the first 10 years of the Premier League. That only really changed when Chelsea were bought by Abramovich.

From memory, I think the only big player Fergie didnt get that he wanted, pre Abramovic, was Shearer. And thats only because Shearer picked his hometown club.

If Anderson was coming through between 93 and 2003, Fergie would have got him, regardless of fee.

But the fact is now, were not at the top table. Very few players are going to pick United over City, Arsenal or even Liverpool. We are shopping in the pool just under - winning out over Spurs and Newcastle for Mbeumo. Or beating Newcastle to Sesko. Times have changed.
We lost out with Shearer to Blackburn as well.

However the point remains.

Can safely say every game he bosses for that plastic club @gaffs will take great joy in say I told you so

How many senior players did we lose this summer? One in Casemiro.

And we know how important he has been. Shouldnt he be replaced with thre best possible option? Which is Anderson.

No, we need better players for our starting XI. We have bought one "squad player" in Ederson. Are we convinced that Fernandes would be a guaranteed starter in the same way Anderson would be?
Yeah, and we were short this season, or haven't you noticed when Casemiro was suspended?

And compared to this season, we'll also have the Champion's League next season too.

More games, less players. Or are we just hoping that our 3 CMs won't get injured, suspended, won't get tired from 2/3 games a week so they won't ever be subbed, won't lose form, etc?

There is no “told you so” because we all know he’s an elite player already.
Yeah who I'm sure we would be in for IF we didn't need to completely rebuild midfield as is the case

I think all though things have changed one thing we have started to do again which I’m hoping to see a bit more of is looking at the PL and pinching some of the best players from the teams in the League. Fergie did that a few times with top teams took Cole from Newcastle, Keane from Forrest, Ferdinand from a big spending Leeds team and Van Persie from Arsenal. Weakened the opposition and strengthened us at the same time. I feel that getting Tonali from a team that were in the CL last year or nicking someone good from Villa like Roger’s would be the way to go this year. Anderson feels like a year too early for us but I’d like to see us cement ourselves as a top team in players eyes by beating Liverpool to a player.

How I wish Forest would price them out completely, however when you have unlimited pit that's never gonna happen unfortunately
City don't tend to be pushed around though, they have a limit that they stop and move on. They've done it with several big signings in the past.

Feel like Bruno is the one to take from Newcastle, however not a chance when he's 29 in November. Sooner this guy agrees a move to City then can move on to realistic targets actually within our budget

I think they felt more comfortable with Pep around. I think this time will be different and they'll want to make a statement signing.

How have we got “less players”? Casemiro left and Ederson is agreed.

The money saved on going for Fernandes over Anderson won’t go towards an extra midfielder. It will go toward an other area such as left beck or left wing.

We will buy 2 midfielders and a third if/when Ugarte is moved on. Or in advance of him moving on.

We know Anderson can stand a long season. He’s played 38 league games, starting 37, and got to a European semi.

Let’s say Case’s replacement is Fernandes and any other midfielder we sign starts on the bench most games. Great, we have more depth, but does our starting midfield improve?

You're forgetting that Bruno played a majority of his games last season at CM, and now he's at number 10. So we've actually lost 2 CMs so far.

Im pointing out the posts from the same poster, or had you not noticed that?

Same poster all in on Balaba for over 100m, but glad were not getting involved at the prices being talked about for Anderson.

Make that make sense when Anderson is far more established and proven?

My point is, when the transfer may happen people are all in. But when it looks like he is off to City, then there seems to be a large dose of "copium".

Different summers, different priorities. And people change their minds. Maybe their stance on Baleba tempered their expectations regarding £100+ m signings this summer. It’s not the gotcha you seem to think.

I agree with the stratergy of going for PL proven. It has worked so far with Mbeumo and Cunha.

But i dont see them as being at the same level as Keane, Cole, Rio and RVP were when we signed them.

I think those equivalents would be Morgan Rogers and Anderson, who seem Arsenal and City bound.

Yeah, i feel the same. A year too early. We are not quite at that level to chalange for a league, imo.

But the question is, what gets us there? Big investments in individuals to improve the starting XI, or padding out the squad with players like Ederson?

So you can see that too?

We've got 1 senior LB (or LW if people insists on thinking Dorgu's an LB), who though started every game this season, is pretty much guaranteed to need at least rest at some point next season.

We need another CF/attacker when Zirkzee leaves.

We've got 2 CMs, assuming Ederson arrives and Ugarte leaves.

So, including Ederson, we need to buy 2 CMs, 1LB and 1 attacker minimum just to have enough players for a longer season.

125 Anderson + 35 Ederson is already 160. That leaves very little movement financially for the LB and attacker.

Now, if it's towards the end of the window, we've sold well (guaranteed income), we've bought well otherwise (good but cheap LB & attacker), and we've got 125 floating about. Sure, go all out for Anderson, I think he's worth that.

But trying to get him now, with a pretty good possibility of leaving us short for other places? That would be terrible planning.

And yes, he played a lot and he's super fit. Doesn't mean he (or Mainoo) wouldn't get injured. Liverpool bet on that with Isak, how did that work out for them last season? Pretty useless having a good first 11 if having a couple of injuries mean you have to start playing a load of kids/players out of positions.

I've still yet to see the amount that was rejected being disclosed? Is that City/Forest sources keeping their mouths shut or am I not looking hard enough?

So you say "we've got 2 CMs, assuming Ederson arrives and Ugarte leaves".

But you are not accounting for any Ugarte money coming in / wages saved?

Nor are you accounting for any money in if Zirkzee leaves.

The reports have been that we can spend as much as 250 now the revolving credit limit debt has been cleared. If we put money on that for Sesko last year, why not for another special talent?

The way im seeing it, we will sign 2 midfielders guaranteed and one more if Ugarte leaves. That provides the same numbers as we had last year - 4 midfielders for two positions.

Now, if it's towards the end of the window, we've sold well (guaranteed income), we've bought well otherwise (good but cheap LB & attacker), and we've got 125 floating about. Sure, go all out for Anderson, I think he's worth that.

He will be gone by then.

But trying to get him now, with a pretty good possibility of leaving us short for other places? That would be terrible planning.

It boils down to a really simple question. Would we be better of both long and short term with Anderson at 125 this summer, or lets say Hall and Fernandes at a combined 125?

Bit of a silly comparison there when you look at Isak's injury record at Newcastle.

Can we change the title to

Elliot Anderson | Ornstein: City submit offer | REJECTED by FOREST

so it’s easier to understand please?

Frankly, we're just going round in circles now, so I'll just leave it with this message.

Is Anderson worth 125? Some would be doubtful, I actually think he may well be worth it.

Is he worth that to Man Utd now? (e.g. your example of is Anderson better than Hall + Fernandes) You say yes, I would say no. I just think Man Utd need too many players right now, that it's simply not worth spending so much on 1 player when we need at least 4.

Later in the window, after sells? Maybe. But for me, trying to get him before sells is just poor financial planning. There are no guarantees the sells will happen, nor we'd sell as well as we hoped. I think it's not worth the risk of hobbling ourselves by trying to buy Anderson now. Not only are we not guaranteed to get as much as we hope from sells, sells may not even happen for a variety of reasons (e.g. injury). It's incredibly poor future planning putting your all your bets on one player when nothing else has happened, and we're so incredibly short in different areas.

You disagree, that's fine, this is an internet forum, most people have different opinions.

And yes, for me, the whole squad will improve getting players like Hall + Fernandes over just Anderson. Like many have already said. If we have a good team/squad, and we're missing this final piece, he's worth more than 125. But when we're short? You think he's still worth it, myself (and seemingly many others in this forum) think no. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

If you think this is going round in circles, you haven't spent much time on The Caf!

I don't disagree that we need to strengthen the squad. Ideally, everyone we buy, Ederson, Fernandes, Hall etc become cornerstones of the team for years to come, but can you bank on that?

With Anderson, he is the closest thing to a home banker, so for that reason, i would get him now, as if/when the we need another top tier midfielder, there may not be one.

If it meant sacrifice getting a left back now and get one next season instead, to allow us to make the jump from Fernandes to Anderson, then its a no brainer for me. Sub obtimla, but we could get by with Shaw, Dallot and even Maz if needed.

And unfortunately, my Hall + Fernandes comparison didn't last long, as now its being reported West Ham want 80mil for Fernandes, so all of a sudden, Anderson for 45 more doesn't seen too much of a reach.

He missed out on Gascoigne to Spurs and tried six times to sign David Hirst including a bid that was rejected and ultimately led us to signing Cantona. Hirst was a fantastic player before his serious injury.

He also missed out on Anelka, Gareth Bale along with a load of top academy prospects like Joe Cole/Michael Owen etc.

To clarify I am largely on your side here as I feel we should be willing to pay the 100+m for Anderson even it means our midfield for next season is Anderson/Mainoo/Bruno/Ederson. Everyone bar Mainoo is a bit of a machine so I wouldn't be too worried.

As per my prior post, I said first 10 years of the Premier league we were large unchallenged for transfers.

Gazza was signed by Spurs in the 80s, and Hurst pre-Cantina therefore pre Premiership.

Bale. I’m sure, Fergie would’ve loved. But again outside that 10 year window when we were unchallenged in the window.

Maybe with the prices quoted for Fernandes from West Ham, United may think again. But City have likely done the legwork by now, so perhaps the chance has gone.

I’m taking Fernandes and Hall.

City did the legwork back in December and unfortunately we were in a bit of sorry state then, so by the time Carrick came in he will have already made his decision to join them. Shame really because the Carrick bounce might have at least made him reconsider but alas not to be. I asked the question could Carrick do a Keegan with Shearer in 96 and the answer is definitely no.
