Well if we match Citys offer and he prefers City it still feels pointless.
It sounds like the move to City is very close now. The guy that called the Guehi and Semenyo to City moves says that Forest have agreed a fee.
I'm sure this has been discussed on the the caf already, but with 115 highly credible and serious charges hanging over City's head how on earth are they being allowed to conduct any further transfer business? Even if the PL authorities decide to slap City on the wrist, they should at least be banned from transfer activity for two seasons. They can keep their soiled trophies, but they should not be allowed to make a mockery of league rules against unfair competition.
Once they've done all their business window, a 2 season transfer ban will hardly affect them anyway.
They've spent the last couple of seasons stocking up on players all with at least 2 years left of their peak, and the older heads like Rodri, Bernardo and Stones are being replaced or becoming surplus to requirements.
Because they're charges? Action won't be taken until there's a verdict.
I get what you are saying, but trying to make it harder for City in a financial way, is like trying to drain the ocean, by getting a bigger bucket for the water.
They simply will sign a new sponsorship deal with a company that was open yesterday in Abu Dhabi, and will agree a deal today with City. This is why they are the most successful commercial club in England. On paper.
We have reputations to uphold with agents, clubs and players. I don’t see how such petty behaviour does anything good for that reputation.
Don’t think driving his price up would help us as a club in the market for more players in the same position. West Ham and others will just use that to justify higher asking prices.
Yeah definitely leaning towards City, like @dinostar77 says it's gonna take a hefty points deduction for things to significantly swing in our favour. I would pass on signing a LB if I genuinely believed we could sign him, however there's no chance he is rejecting City.
Right, a verdict we've been waiting over three years for. The charges were made public on February 6, 2023 and it is now June 8, 2026 -- with no end in visible sight. The 12 week hearing concluded in December 2024. December 2024 is now 17 months ago. It's reasonable to assume that the delay in announcing the verdict, and there is no chance that internally there is any doubt as to what the verdict is -- and I'll go a step further to speculate that if the verdict is that City did nothing wrong that the verdict would have been issued by now -- has everything to do with presenting the evidence as conclusively irrefutable as humanly possible.
The charges, which I agree at this point are just allegations, allege that these offenses took place over a 9 year period. So yes, they are just charges...during which time City are allowed to conduct their business as though there is nothing to see here.
Yes it’s taken a long time. Too long. But you asked a question and I answered it. There’s no point questioning why they’re allowed to make transfers whilst waiting for the verdict, because the answer is in the question.
Even if city weren't in the race, I don't think United have the ability to fork out 100m+ since we need other players too

I don't get why you'd want to hang around for someone who's likely told you, I've agreed to go to city, but if that falls through because of the charges - hit me up. I feel like we abandon those principles around our transfers whenever we feel like it - this one being we want players who want to be here and no where else.
We have no idea what has been said. And reducing the pool to only those who want to be here just doesn’t make sense at the top end of the market where the best players are fiercely competed for and are often swayed by how much they are won over by a club. Ferguson himself brought great players here who were destined to go elsewhere, not least Keane who was all set to go to Blackburn with Dalglish until we intercepted.

Of course, but it seems painfully obvious he's going to end up at City. I don't mind intercepting and convincing them, that's completely legit, but if the only real reason he's not going to City is around the 115 charges, that's a bit different in my eyes.
I agree, you should be doing the charm offensive, not waiting in the wings for the first choice no longer be an option. That's why I think with Fernandes we should be moving first.

I am not sure he has a preference and perhaps he can be wooed, not just by us but anyone else who enters the fray.
Ironically, Anderson is the gift that keeps giving for the media because he’s silent so they have carte blanche to fill up tonnes of column inches and social media with whatever they want. That engagement = £, the whole time Anderson is half a planet away prepping hard for the biggest event in his career.

And break the market even more? The long term effect if he goes for say 120m, is that becomes the new marker for clubs selling, they will point back to this moment. Then when that time comes we’ll be “we can’t afford to get involved”

I think we just get the Fernandes deal done quickly before whatever price this lands on becomes the new benchmark for talented young Premiership proven midfielders. Anderson is in the US with England for the next 6 weeks or whatever, it's probably just left with Citeh and Forest to agree the fee. Meanwhile Fernandes has apparently given lots of positive vibes he wants Utd, and currently hanging out with our captain. Get it done.
I agree get it done and then take our time getting the big CM we want, be it Tcheaumeni(sp?) Tonali or whoever.
The mood music seems to be that a third midfielder would be dependent on Ugarte leaving. Which is unlikely to happen until after the WC. My gut feeling is Fernandes will be the marquee/expensive midfield singing given his potential price.

And besides, what does going for another midfielder, like Fernandes, do? Maybe saves us 40-50mil which equates to one player.
Does one extra player really do in terms of depth? Is one extra player better than the difference that Anderson over Fernandes would make?
In my opinion, United improve more by spending big on Anderson, rather than using that money for two players. He will make a bigger difference to games than Fernandes plus a back up would. That is the case even if we went for Anderson over Fernandes + Hall, in my opinion.
If we need more depth, which i agree we do, add it next season as there may not be a top tier center mid available then. It is not like were ready to win the CL or PL either way. This season is likely about maintaining a level and ensuring we get CL next season.
There isn't a right or wrong order to build a squad, but when a top quality player comes up, we should go in for him.
Maybe it is just me, but i think Anderson would be a foundational peice of our team for at least 8 years. We have gone for second, or third, best many times and they always have short shelf life.
I agree. Of course we need depth, but our first eleven still doesn't match up favorably to Arsenal/City either. Anderson is the best player to just plug into that Casemiro spot, even if we had to cut it a bit shorter on our depth signings because of his price. That fourth midfielder doesn't have to be a £50m+ player and even a free agent like Goretzka or a smart loan signing could suffice for next season.
The way I see it is we would go after him if we got a clear indication that he’s interested in joining United. However that doesn’t appear the case so we’re putting it out there that we won’t pay that much. However we are leaving the door slightly open in case he changes his mind.
