Elliot Anderson | Ornstein: City submit offer | rejected by Forest

Maybe, again, who knows. That’s my point. We don’t know enough about anything to know that he is definitely off the table. It’s barely even June and the transfer market is notoriously unpredictable. There will be lots of movement of bigger name players after the World Cup, and things leaked from clubs should never be taken at face value because bluffing is all part of transfer fun and games.
I spose the big question is do you risk passing on Scott in the hope of Real stance changing if they sign Rodri

The club itself will have a far better idea than any of us of how best to play it as they’ll be getting signals from agents etc. Depends also on who we target after Ederson. I’m hoping we prioritise Fernandes and get him locked down sooner rather than later. Getting two CMs in will relieve the pressure on that final signing and then maybe it makes sense to keep our options open till later in the window

I am confused by your point. He is so good that if he became available he must end up at Real or retire?

Or he must either go to Real or stay at Chelsea because Chelsea would only deem Real worthy of purchasing him? Why?
Correct. "He is so good that if he became available he must end up at Real or retire?"

We are not at the stage for marquee signings. We say that every year it seems like. God, imagine being in "rebuild mode" for about 13 years running
So who is your marquee name when this guy joins City and Tchouameni stays at Real. Oh and geordies completely price us out for Tonali then?

If we were be up with something like fernandes, ederson, Scott and Lewis hall I would be pretty happy. Maybe one attacker as well. Don't need a marquee name, we didn't get one last season and it was not an issue.

We didn't really make marquee signings under SAF either, to be fair. Maybe Veron you could argue. At a stretch Rooney, but wasn't the kind of money and wages Anderson would cost

The question is not whether you buy marquee signings, its whether a top top player is available in a position you need. There aren't those sort of players popping up every summer in every position which is why clubs break the bank for them when they do.

Are we in a position to break bank for him considering currently in the process of rebuilding midfield

Dont want a £125mil marquee signing who is anything but.

The price is ridiculous. He's not even in the same class as a vitiniha, joao neves or pedri.

Kind of insane that he'd cost more than the combined price of Vitinha and Neves when you think about it

They literally bought a multi-CL winning midfield with less

I would assume so. You make allowances and cut your cloth accordingly elsewhere if needs be if you think a player truly is transformational and will be with the club for a decade or more. £100m+ for a player who will be your first choice CM for a decade is a no brainer. Its very easy to spend 50/60m on 5 players who don't work out over a few seasons vs just spending the money for a more obvious guarantee.

I don't think many people are thinking that Rice was poor value for Arsenal and hes got another 5-7 years in him at the top level I imagine.

I think the only way INEOS would ever spend £100m plus on a single player is if he completes the puzzle or adds a different dimension to strong squad

If we were told ‘it’s going to be 100 million minimum’ and just walked away knowing City will be going for him at that rate. Then yes let’s not spend that and even entertain it.

And instead bring in inferior players because they are cheaper? We aren’t going to get closer to challenging by signing second tier players. We need elite players through the door.

So what should they do when he only wants City, I look forward to your reply on this one

My response was more to the fact they aren’t looking at “marquee” signings.. or as I’d call it, elite signings. If City for whatever reason is his first choice then so be it, as you say there isn’t much we can do about that but we should then be on the lookout for a similar type of player.

Who is that similar type of player to him?

Then unfortunately that would give me cause for concern surrounding where we currently are as a club if we are no longer able to attract the “big players”.

Off the top of my head, I couldn’t give you one. There is bound to be someone though, he hasn’t got such a unique skill set that makes him a one of a kind. If the scouts are doing their job properly, we have identified the type of player we want in Anderson, they need to be finishing alternatives to him.

Have you seen his % on data MB, would be very surprised if we can find anyone close to those metrics

Am I the only one that doesn’t want this guy, so overpriced and nothing special yet.
Can we spend the money on Fernadez and Baleba/Scott please?

Vitiniha didn’t look anything special at Wolves. Sometimes a player needs that big move to accelerate their potential.

I’d rather spend the majority of the budget on Anderson alone than get Ederson and Baleba. Filling the squad with players that are not good enough just to add “volume” is ridiculous.

He broke the british transfer record 5 times. Tried to sign Shearer for a world record fee. Tried to sign the likes of Ronaldinho, rivaldo, Figo, batisituta

If Anderson prefers City, as has been fairly widely reported, then there's nothing we can do about it anyway. The success of our rebuild is never going to rest on one single player anyway - we need to balance many needs against limited funds, and money spent smartly in a few areas may well ending bearing more fruit than the same amount spent on fewer.

They are! It seems they've settled on Fernandes as the next best option. And Fernandes at 21 is a little ahead of where Anderson was at 21, yet he'll probably be half the price.
