That car, as also the model 3 has been planned by them for years. Anyone that thinks they only initially ever meant to make supercars is being very short sighted.

Anyway I find this thread rather strange. Elon Musk is obviously a pretty capable human being
A twat for sure. Twisted sense of humour, no doubt. Fairly unpleasant to be around, almost certainly. But also with a shot at being one of the major figures of the 21st century.

Think it was him, talked about education. Get a degree from Harvard etc, mostly it informs potential employers of your connections, in/heritage, able to do the work necessary to get through school. not much about..my english lagging.."exceptionality" as a person, creativity, etc. Many degrees anyways dated before finishing 4-7 years of school, tech, etc,

Its bound to lose ground given that it was pretty much the only show in town for years. Other companies are therefore going to gradually cut into its market share. Its still the leading EV maker in the world by a wide distance and I wouldn't expect that to change for a long time.
Yeah you’re right losing ground isn’t the right term. They’ve been overtaken in Europe by the European EV makers. What he’s achieved with Tesla is very impressive but the figures you’re quoting are from Tesla-friendly sources that cherry pick. Maybe they will dominate the US market, but that’s not the direction they’re going in here. They’re doing a little better in China currently, but domination hardly looks on the cards there either. Hyperbole just follows him around.

He isn't even the founder of Tesla.
He is legally allowed to call himself a co-founder. The two guys who actually incorporated the name in 03 did feck all until Musk invested millions, which in turn made him the head of the company.

They built the first Tesla and designed the drivetrain and propulsion until they ran out of money, but sure let’s believe Musk when he says they did feck all.

Musk, in typical fashion, fought a court case to get himself and 2 others to also legally be allowed to call themselves a “co-founder”

The guy is a twat. But seriously someone think that a company like Tesla or SpaceX (and paypal) would had happened without him? Because he had money before hand, yes, but so many others. Maybe is good at PR, maybe he has a nose for new technologies market vacuum, maybe he knows who to hire, maybe a mix to everything, but is not a coincidence that he succeeded in 3 companies that no one succeeded before at this level

credit where credit's due

And he should be out of twitter

personally think Tesla is massively over valued and it’ll be the existing brands and automakers that will drive most electric mass market adoption but you have to give props to Tesla for getting it started IMO.

It didn't though... If any car started the environmentally conscious personal transport trend it's the Toyota Prius.

Agree with both you and @That'sHernandez, in a way. The Prius popularised it for people who buy cars for practical reasons, the Tesla popularised for people who (can afford to) buy cars for aspirational reasons. Fewer people buy cars for aspirational reasons, but many more people take more notice of aspirational cars. Tesla clearly redefined the image of an electric car and expanded its horizons. Whether that was a natural next step is neither here nor there, from my perspective. Executing it is difficult and in this particular case, timing does count for a lot. it doesn't really matter whether someone developed a smartphone in 2000 or 2010, but it does matter for EVs. They moved the schedule forward and someone needed to.

My favorite response:

"He's helping" fecking hell, he made an investment because he saw an opportunity to make money and get some positive PR. To his sycophants, this means he's now an expert in the field and is therefore qualified to make statements about who should or shouldn't get the vaccine/second dose.
