As Ben Jacobs (whether you like him or not he is somewhat reliable) is reporting this now alongside Alex Crook, I think it deserves it’s own thread. (The other one is locked)

Probably on the decline but better than what we currently have.

I think he may be coming into his peak 2 years, so the question is, would we take an Emi Martinez at his peak? That is surely a simple one to answer?

What makes you think that? If anything, this season has been a poor one for him

40m fee supposedly which is a lot so would hopefully get a reasonable undeserved fee for Onana to help offset.

32yo so 3 years younger than when Van Der Sar signed for us. Hopefully get 4-5 years from him, not that old for a keeper.

Defo the sort of character we need at the club.

So no meaningful decline, less errors, similar clean sheets and goals, and more command of his 6 yard box.

Holy formatting, Batman.

in the nicest possible way, I am not going to the effort of hosting images to load for the sake of appeasing anyone's inability to read a few lines of text

Two or three years ago he had everything I wanted in our keeper except ball playing ability. That was the one weakness that was honestly stopping him being one of the best keepers in the world.

Apparently he's looked like he's been on the decline this season, but I don't think I've watched Villa play except the matches against us so I'm just taking what others have said.

I’m sure he is one of many options. The biggest issue will be that Villa will demand a king’s ransom and the fact we’re genuinely shite irrespective of the Europa league outcome. Atletico Madrid would probably be his preferred destination imo.

Howson made a video about him. He's a slight upgrade over onono

Where's the fee coming from?

He's a solid enough keeper for the most part, but became massively overrated after the World Cup.

Better than Onana, but not above a brainfart himself, and doesn't seem all that comfortable with the ball. Wouldn't go anywhere near him at the figures being thrown around, unless you could stick him in a time machine and make him 25 again.

God no, he's a bellend. Mental age of a twelve year old. Can't stand him and his piggy eyes.

Aside from him being a twat, he's 33 in September so it would be a really short term signing. Not what we should be aiming for at all.

It definitely can happen, you are forgetting the bar with Onana is very low.
£20M is stupidly cheap for a first teamer.

Ideally I’d want Zion Suzuki but he’ll cost £50M I suspect

This would be peak us, signing - someone who's probably has his worst season and on the decline, for mega wages.

He’s clearly a better keeper than the current clown we have.

However, there do seem to be more errors creating into his game.

Wouldn’t mind at all him coming to United, but not for £40m, on a 3-4 year contract. It would be a real risk of repeating the same mistakes we made with Casemiro, Sanchez etc. his overall package would be extremely costly.

If we think we can afford it, why not. Onana needs replacing.

However I was hoping we’d go down the 32 year old, calm and commanding route rather than another windup merchant with an ego bigger than his save percentage.

There has to be another Yann Sommer type signing out there, no? Sub 10m, built like a brick shit house, comes in and calms the defence down, claims every corner, organises the likes of Yoro and Heaven etc.

Martinez would most likely go for that fee or slightly less even Saudi won't pay 40 m for him .

But not for a goalkeeper.

According to TransferMarkt, do you know how many goalkeepers in history have been sold for an initial fee of £20million or over? 22... That's literally it. 22.

Not only that but do you know how many goalkeepers over the age of 30 have been sold for that much? 3...

Most goalkeepers over 30 go for under £15m

Honestly, unless you are getting a young and undoubted World Class keeper, spending lots of money on one is totally pointless. We just need a competant, standard goalkeeper, we really don't need to spend a lot of money

Gotta adjust for inflation, mate!

Shocking stats, and I'd overall agree even though you have less goalkeepers being sold, making it harder to get the numbers up.

But the right way to think both from a buyer and seller's perspective is simply whether a signing is worth the money or not.

Would we cash in 10m more from revenue if Onana hadn't sent us out in some cup competitions? Probably. So if Martinez original price is 10m and it's an extra 10m to not go out in stupid fashion, it's worth it.

If we're spending on an old goalkeeper I'd much rather get Kepa. 2 years "younger" and both decent with feet and a great shot stopper. 1 year left on his contract.

He'd be a fantastic signing, but unfortunately not one we can afford. We need to spend our money better. We need to move on Onana and replace him with someone competent. Doesn't have to be world class, but competent and consistent is a must.

The Napoli goalkeeper is available on a free - Meret, might be worth a chance. If he can do a job for a season or two, you can demote him after that and get in a WC player. Also seen a lot of talk about Milinkovic-Savic. All i know about him is he's big and and was a youth player for us.

Yep this. Find a Sels or a Vicario. Don't be Villa's get out of jail free card for PSR.

They keep churning transfers fast to dodge the PSR bullets .. we can't bail them out with 40M for a keeper.

Why are Atletico interested? Where's Oblak going?
