Emi Martinez

Always thought he had the look of a Manchester United goalkeeper. Big, imposing, not quite on the same level but Big Pete style.

Good player. Probably wrong time, and potentially far too expensive. Obviously far better than Onana - but there are lots of other options.

If available for £12-15m I would take him, but I imagine Villa are looking for a lot more.

I’d agree on that. I remember Neville saying you need to have a certain something about you to play goalkeeper or centre forward for United or it can just swallow you up. To be fair, I thought Onana had that at first, then unfortunately I watched him play football.

Would pay maybe £20m plus addons at max

Yeah Schmeichel and VDS definitely had that

And to play both positions for United you need to a bit of a nutter.

Hate him as a person but he would be great here. You don't just need the skills to be successful here but arguably having strong mentality is more important. He has both, with the mentality is strong abundance.

If he's on the market it would be stupid of us to not try and sign him, regardless of whether we find a suitor for Onana.

Why do you hate him as a person?

Isn't that just a general statement about any elite club?

They're still in EL, aren't they? I understand Man Utd is obviously a much bigger club with a lot of prestige but playing in Europe is important for a lot of players.
I can't imagine many would turn down United for a Europa campaign!

It's a shame he's so expensive for a 32 year old. £10mil would be a good price.

I think he has the confidence and personality to play for Utd.

Be funny if we signed him and he had to miss the first game because of a red he suffered against us!

Why are people sticking their nose at him? He's a good goalkeeper and is a world cup winner fecksake

I just think people only want him if he's not so expensive that we can't sign other targets. He is 32 so who knows when he'll decline. Could be 1 year, could be 4, it's all a guess.

He's a goalkeeper how is 31 an issue? Christ we signed VDS at 34

oh i know he does but he's miles better than Onana
100%. Our players likely expect Onana to drop a clanger or two every game, regardless of the opposition. That instils fear in the back line. Martinez, although probably past his prime, would bring maturity and confidence to our defence. Doesn’t mean he won’t make mistakes - all keepers do - but he’ll be a huge upgrade on Onana.

Number of posters said he was a howler-prone last season seeing it as a sign of decline. Would be strange at his age to be over the hill already but I havent seen enough of him last season to judge.

Stats wont reveal much IMO but anyone with those numbers of keepers´ mistakes leading to goals last yer in PL and how Martinez did there? Watched him a couple of times in CL and he looked sharp.

He'd be a massive important over Onana obviously and a strong character to add, but I don't think he's quite as good as often made out. £40m for 'keeper who'll be 33 a few weeks into the season is also silly money.

He makes a lot of mistakes, and would likely be looking for an incredible contract as it'll be his last. Think he's also on the decline, having won the WC. We must be able to find a better choice for me.

I'd like us to do better than this. Maybe a GK who isn't as good right now, but will be far superior in a year or 2
