England World Cup Discussion

If England can’t beat Norway, then they have no business being in the conversation around winning a World Cup. No disrespect to Norway who can surprise a few on their day as a very poor Brazil found out.

Norway did also ride their luck a bit vs. Brazil. Missed penalty and a couple of other really big chances before Haaland scored.

England won’t underestimate them.

Norway's a huge red flag for me. Possibly a harder fixture than Mexico. Certainly a much better team and they'll play to our weaknesses. Haaland is going to be determined to knock us out for the banter rights.

This yellow card suspension rule is a farce. Like it’s fecked up. You can get blatant reds overturned or suspended, but heaven forbid you have two yellow cards in the space of a Methuselah life time and that’s a suspension.

TELL ME I’M WRONG

Just read about that in todays newspaper:

England traveled by far the most of all teams with 21.000km.

Norway 12.000km in the meantime.

Dunno if someone traveled even less though, hope not as it would be totally absurd then. Not sure how it was in WCs before. Travelling almost twice as long as your opponent(s) is quite the disadvantage.
I don't know if this is really so much of a big deal. 9000 extra kms sounds kind of a lot, but it's only really about 10 hours more flying, spread over a month. The big one was going to Mexico, and playing in completely different conditions to the rest of the tournament, but even then, the flight itself was only about three hours.

England deliberately chose a base in the centre of the US. So I guess they knew they would do extra travelling, but the compensation would be that no individual flight would be very long, and that they would have what they believed to be the ideal training centre.

Norway weren't lucky at all against Brazil. They were in complete control. Brazil had the penalty and a couple of chances, Norway had a few themselves.

Whilst I'm nervous about the game, we couldn't ask for much more in terms of our run so far. Even to get to the final there's likely to be a Messi led Argentina who have struggled passed lots of their opponents.

If we don't have half the squad suspended I'd back us to beat them.

Pro noun abusing, edge-betting post of the tournament.
Is he supporting England, Norway or Switzerland?

Or France?

Not a soul alive should be over confident about england winning, today. Have they seen our history? Now, on paper England have a good chance to get through the match but we have not put in a great performance over the 90, yet. This tourney has been a mixed bag. We need to be near our best, now.

I’m more confident against these than I was against Mexico.

I am too. These are all Premier League/north European style players so it's a like-for-like battle. England have better versions in every position bar maybe Haaland and Odegaard, and even then it's debatable.

I reckon you’ll have too much physicality for them and just overpower them in the end. Might be a slow or sloppish start but I’m thinking and hoping for a 3-1 England win.

I suppose accumulated fatigue might come into play though? I checked it out in the end and it’s actually kind of ridiculous the difference in travelling done between England and France over the tournament. Norway and England are closer but England have still done a fair bit more travelling and had that punishing game against Mexico.

Same but marginally so. Mexico felt like a coin flip, this one we're moderate favourites but they've got a fair chance.
Plus we had a few disadvantages against Mexico. I’ve not really been impressed with Norway but they just have that 1 ST that’s frustratingly good… give him half a chance and he buries it

The two Bergs, Odegaard and Bobb I think will cause England lots of issues. Not saying it's on the same level of Croatia 2018 but it is a better midfield than Croatia had at this World Cup. And what Mexico put out v England.

A couple of them will low block like Ghana did I reckon and then up to Bobb and Odegaard on the break to see what they can create for Haaland.

I struggle to see Rice lasting 90 minutes if he's been sick for a few days. He will give it a go obviously but think Norway can hurt England in that regard.

The Solbakken era would be just spamming endless crossfield balls to Sorloth as think England would set up fine to deal with that.

I think there's a few talents there. They've played painfully dreary football but there's some attacking players capable of special moments besides the lad from Leeds.

If England lose today will it be the greatest footballing failure of all times since the last time England lost to a team they should've beaten?

6 days rest is very important for England. Anything less after the match in Mexico I don't think England recover enough to beat Norway.

England should dominate just like France and Spain and get through.

Any England fan smelling a potential upset? I think Haaland, Sorloth, Nusa and Odegaard are going to have a lot of joy against your backline... It's going to be a riveting watch.
You can say the same about both backlines. Whoever wins the midfield battle is likely to win the game, imo. Haaland can’t do much without supply, whilst Kane is a threat 40m from goal with his passing and follow-in play.

Bellingham is the X-Factor that isn’t being spoken about as he should be. Norway have their hands full containing him over anyone else. If Gordon plays like he did in the last game, they also have no-one who can live with him.

to be fair to England, (and Southgate), when was the last time in a tournament England lost to a team they were "supposed to beat?"

2018 Croatia had an incredible midfield (ours was Henderson Ali and Lingard in a 3-5-2.

2020 we lost in the Final.

2022 we lost to France.

2024 we lost in the Final.

2016 was the last time we lost to a team we were supposed to beat? 10 years.

Southgate's problem was big games - it wasn't again lesser ranked teams in KOs.

Just goes to show how much of a success Brexit was.

Bring it home for Widdicomb boys.

Off to a fanzone for this one. I best not get flying beer landing in my hair only for England to lose like last time.

If Gordon and Bellingham perform to a similar level as they did vs Mexico then I'm confident of a win.

We absolutely should've beaten Italy in the 2021 final, especially considering we had the home advantage.

Beer is good for your hair. Unless it's mixed with stomach acids of course

It will be much more straight forward than some people think. Some of these fairytale runs from smaller nations often come to an abrupt end, when they meet true quality and perhaps games are beginning to accumulate for narrower squads. Kane is going to deliver.

2-0 or 3-0 England.
