England World Cup Discussion

I get O Reilly and Lewis-Skelly both offer the flexibility to play at LB and in midfield, however why didn't he just take one of them and proper LB in Hall too

For transparency I'm Irish.

I'm shocked Maguire is not in the squad and a little disappointed! I hope mentally it doesn't affect him for United. Perhaps it won't because, mentally, he is very strong!

I'm funny with England because there's aways United players in the team. I kinda want to see them do well and I'm not saying I'd like England to win the WC. When in tournaments I constantly route and un route. I think a lot of Irish people feel the same but they won't admit it.

It will be very annoying if Rashford's inclusion delays us shifting him.

"Marcus is focused on the World Cup and he will make a decision on the future after the tournament."

I
England teams?? He really wouldn’t. He isn’t in the same class as Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell etc…

He has been very fortunate to play a prominent role in so many tournaments. A good player without ever really being great.

Too much bias around him here. Him being left out of an England squad at 33 is not a big deal.

If he had Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell in front of him then they decision would be understandable. He doesn't. There is perhaps one English CB who has a claim for being better than Maguire this season.

I'm not English but think the following should be in:
  1. Maguire (genuinely maybe starts)
  2. Gibbs-White - attacker in form
  3. Bowen over Madueke (even Dowman over Madueke ffs)
  4. Hall (OBVIOUSLY)
  5. Palmer (poor season but decisive player with balls on him)
  6. Welbeck (over Toney whose payed Saudi league since the last tournament)
  7. Wharton (over "Hendo")
and probably
  • Alexander Arnold
Burn, Henderson, Quansah are minging shouts and Stones and Livramento cannot be match fit by then.

Honestly, it's (supposedly) the 25 best footballers from every country. The margins are slim. There's far more to be gained from having a cohesive, well-drilled squad than to just pick the biggest names. The superstars (Kane, Rice, Bellingham, etc) aside, personality plays as much a part as talent. If Tuchel thinks Maguire is detrimental to the dressing room when he's not a guaranteed starter it makes more sense to leave him out. Everyone who has played with Henderson says he's a leader, so I can see why they want him in there just to wrangle the youngsters a bit.

That being said, there's a few in there I can't quite understand though.

Why are people bang on that Saka will be guaranteed to start on that right wing? Having watch Arsenal, he has been dogshit all season. So if Cole Palmer can be left out, why not him?

Because you can't find 23 top-level English players who haven't been "dogshit"* this season

Imagine arguing who's been better this season between Eze, Madueke and Saka**...

*dogshit is relative

**(just realized they would all look good in a Super Eagles jersey but alas)

When you need someone to head the ball in the net in the 90th minute or do last ditch defending who you gonna call, it has to be Maguire. Can’t believe he hasn’t been included.

Yeah Anfield is a prime example of a late winner, just can't get my head around Gibbs-White who has 24 goal involvement this season not being included. I think Palmer is out of form, however you saw against Spain what he can do off the bench. I like Gordon but don't get the feeling he could produce that bit of magic when it's needed.

How is Henderson still getting in?

Looking at the supposed squad, feels like our little era of hope is over officially. It’s just not very special. But the selections don’t help that, it’s a squad lacking in magic for me.

I get Tuchel wants players he can trust and do the job of his system, but when you see utter dross like Madueke get selected it’s just like….really? That’s who we’re hoping can help win us the World Cup?

If you guys actually watch England under Tuchel and how they play, Maguire simply couldn't go cos he doesnt fit the playing style. Harry is one of the reasons we at United play deep too because he cant handle the big spaces in behind.

Shaw is just “meh” player these days far from his Shawberto days from Euro 2020/2021. He barely attacks or does anything positive going forward.
There is this and also Tuchel's previous comments during international camps. Personally, I wouldn't have taken them but it's been clear for some time that Henderson and Burn for example were likely to make the squad due to non-playing reasons. It was a reason for some of Southgate's picks in the past too...remember Coady made the Euro 2021 squad for example.

Yeah definitely lacks magic

Non-playing reasons? Just recall Stuart Pearce and Robbo then.

Even in the teams that make the final, there will be players that get next to no minutes and are picked based on squad dynamics, particularly in these 26 man squads.

That is such an underwhelming squad. I would be surprised if England makes it to semi final.

Neymar and Henderson lining up on opposing benches then

This is a joke. No one in that England team is better on set pieces than Maguire and that’s what wins you some games in tournaments.

Funnily enough if England play Brazil you'll have Henderson and Fabinho on the bench for each team, running it back to a 2019 era reunion

Jordan Henderson being selected is ludicrous. He should have done the honourable thing and ruled himself out of contention.

No player should be making any squad for ‘non playing reasons’. Subs will be needed throughout the tournament due to the conditions, all of the squad need to be ready to step in.

Laughable Maguire isnt going. Shaw I get somehow, Maguire not so much.

Laughable he's not taking Palmer too and is taking the likes of Toney and especially fekin Henderson.

I think England still have one of the strongest starting 11s in the tournament but the drop off if they get a couple of injuries is going to be enormous. There's just no depth in any of those positions really.

To be honest I am not a fan of seeing Maguire starting for United. I want us to play quick and dynamic football and Maguire is just not the right player.
That said in a tournament where the football is generally slower and automatisms are not as important as having different options on the bench he surely would be useful.
The press will be all over Tuchel if this does not work out.

Tuchel brought Dan Burn in just in case they're losing, Burn will start doing his shit dance move in an attempt to cheer the lads up again.

What Tuchel doesn't understand, is that that dance will infuriate every single human in that dressing room even further.

We never had any chance anyway, but this squad is gonna take some explaining!

Why would he not just have offered Henderson a role on the support team rather than wasting a place in the squad if he desperately wanted him there for leadership. He isn’t getting any minutes.

This is a functional rather than creative squad….if we are chasing the game what we gonna do to break teams down?

With players going to be struggling in the heat being able to rotate some of the Palmer/Gibbs White players in would have made sense.

Such a weird squad, and definitely not as strong as previous tournaments.

Isn’t Livramento in to provide that cover? Assuming he’s fit
Thought he wasn't in it, but if so then yeah, you're right.

The same Spence who is a benchplayer for one of the worst teams in the PL?
He's played under Tuchel for England though and he rates him. Not saying I agree with the pick, but understand the logic from Tuchel view.

This obsession over covering players rather than picking players who are already available for those positions is very odd.
Kind of agree but at the same time some of your best options in RB and LB positions are injury prone.
