Joe Denly the great survivor getting a game in the one day series as well. Surely we should be looking at a Livingstone or a Sam Hain (ridiculous one day record).
Hasn't done much at ODI level but I hope he can play a few shots. He seemed to be stifled by being up the order in Tests so hopefully he can be given license to let loose, though fair play if you're just sick of waiting for him to do anything of note for England.

I don't mind him, but I think he's a marginal selection and give we're at the beginning of a new 4 year cycle I would rather they looked at someone younger.

I think they're essentially using it as a chance to give more international white ball experience to some of the players who will be around the T20 World Cup squad in October rather than planning for the next 4 year cycle. Denly's leg spin has looked handy with a white ball and he's a good bat in the domestic T20 structure so they're giving him a chance to take him as a Mooen Ali back up.

I agree with you but to be fair to him he's keeping us in this match with a decent knock.

Think England should recall Hales particularly with the T20 World Cup upcoming. He's been sensational in the Big Bash and I think the lineup looks a bit stale right now unless Banton really does hit it off. He'll also be extremely eager to deliver while for some they're still in a Post-World Cup hangover.

Banton @ 6 is classic funky English cricket nonsense. The only way I can rationalise it is if they're considering taking a look at him as a finisher for T20. Proper logjam at the top order in that form the game. Roy, Bairstow, Hales, Buttler and Banton all open for their franchises and counties.

England are gonna have to find a top class spinner and a Plunkett replacement if they want to defend their World Cup.

Just saw South Africa's playing XI. That's a very weak line up. I hope there are new talents coming up for them. You need a strong SA cricketing team for the game of cricket to be entertaining.

Archer has a stress injury and out of the IPL. Least surprising bit of cricketing news of the year.

Massive loss to this years tournament.

After Kohli, Sharma and Stokes, think Archer would have been 4th biggest audience generator

Agree. Denly was on the fringe of the WC squad so it's only right he gets the chance when others are ruled out. Plus Livingstone is an opener in white-ball isn't he (not sure about Hain).

Basically confirms what we all said about Root over-bowling him doesn't it.

Bad news for the Royals but they can get Alzarri Joseph who'd be a handy replacement.

In the long-term you have to wonder about the balance of the attack if we're going to play Wood and Archer. They clearly want to use Stokes as a shock bowler too, so someone's going to have to bowl the donkey overs.

My preference would be to bring Woakes in for Broad. There isn't much difference in terms of effectiveness and Woakes is fit enough to bowl 25 overs in a day.

Rashid wasn't at his best throughout the WC and England still won. But yeah, would be great if we found one.

Surely one of the Currans will replace Plunkett?

Poor from Morgan, England just need the two Joe’s to bat sensibly as the run rate is a non issue

England sneaked over the line despite the mini collapse at the end. Don't know why they're playing Banton in ODI (especially at 6) and not T20. He averaged over 30 for Brisbane in the BBL and had the highest strike rate of anybody in the tournament. Would have liked to have seen him against SA to give him another opportunity to show if he's got what it takes to play on the international scene. Could be a real plus for England for the T20 World Cup later this year.

Guess they feel we're stacked for options at the top. Buttler might well bat there, like he does for Rajasthan.

England team for today's match:

Buttler
Roy
Bairstow
Morgan
Stokes
Denly
Ali
T Curran
Rashid
Jordan
Wood

Stick Archer back in (probably for Wood) and that's not far off our strongest side at the moment.

Are we missing a trick in not recalling Bopara? Surely he'd be perfect for the No.6 role and he can bowl a bit as well.

Don't think so. Seems they just feel they've got loads of openers at the moment. Maybe his time will come in the summer.
Saw him play in Big bash, seems a huge talent. Looking forward to see him in IPL. He has been picked by KKR so it should be good.

Yeah he's great. Just not sure how we fit him into the team with Roy, Buttler and Bairstow at the top. Maybe Roy will end up dropping out.

Was looking ominous halfway through that but England's bowling improved massively. Wood and Jordan came through in those last two overs, think it's a decent target but I fancy our chances.

Yeah England definitely messed it up, Morgan after doing the hard work has himself to blame there.

Also I made a comment that Denly shouldn't be in the side and then deleted it to give him a fair chance but he should be nowhere near the side as a specialist Batsman. Cover for Moeen at best. The fascination with Denly in all formats has to stop.

Morgan and Curran played absoultely daft shots. So unneccessary and cost England the game.
