Ennio Morricone, the Italian composer whose credits include the "spaghetti" Westerns that made Clint Eastwood a star, has died in Rome aged 91.

The prolific composer also wrote music for Once Upon a Time in America, The Untouchables and Cinema Paradiso.

Having received an honorary Oscar in 2007, he went on to win one in 2016 for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight.

Morricone, who was simply known as "Maestro" in his home town of Rome, scored more than 500 films over seven decades.

One of my favourite composers alongside Angelo Badalamenti and Goldenthal.
So, it's big loss for film. His work alone with Leone was epic.

Metallica starting their concerts with the Ecstasy of Gold is one of those awesome moments in life. The goosebumps, the anticipation... it's glorious.

So many memories with my family in the 80s, watching those brilliant movies with his music. Unforgettable. Amazing composer.

Still best to this day. Felt like without him, there would be no push for strong soundtracks in brands like Star Wars and few other inspired by his genius.

Never heard a bad score from him.. He is my favourite composer by far.. How he didn't get an Oscar until 2016 just baffles me. Diverse, all genre and both ruthless and thoughtful. RIP you Italian Genie.
