Enzo Maresca - Chelsea manager - Sack watch

I never understood the hype around this guy and still dont.
He looks completely clueless and seems to get bailed out every week by a new player on their 100-players roster

Where is this hype that you speak of?
Definitely got hyped over the summer after getting you the top 4 finish ( the bare minimum given how shit the rest of us were) and winning the CWC having had a Carabao Cup path to the final…

He limits his teams with his philosophy, but at the same time, he has been badly let down by woeful recruitment.

How can they have spent over a billion pounds and still have a selection or average wingers, mediocre centre backs and terrible keepers?

Jackson would have been incredibly valuable for them this season again; and they are currently starting a youth player who they tried to sell in the summer.

Just a disaster all round, and one I am sure will get worse as the games come think and fast.

It’s really incredible to see the squad they have assembled for that money. So many punts, no experience, no proper depth and no stability.

I wonder if in the next match Chelsea will try to continue keeping up with the (Vinnie) Joneses again.

Impossible to judge him properly with the number of injuries to key players and with early/mid game red cards in 2/5 matches. No manager thrives under those circumstances.

Yeah, impossible to judge the most bloated squad in the league because they have injuries in a team that barely a settled 11

Are you being serious? Your team spent more than 1,5bn in two windows, using the injury card is disingenuous at best
Chelsea wasting a fecktonne of money on players doesn't make our squad bloated though does it? We had 2 keepers on the bench and a 17 year old without a first team appearance.

It's perfectly fair to say "Chelsea have wasted more money than anyone needs in a lifetime and it's disgraceful" but it categorically doesn't make our squad any more bloated than those of other top teams. We finished the match with literally zero first team CBs on the pitch for feck's sake.

We have 27 players in the squad this season - 28 if you count Mudryk. Hardly bloated.

I loved his celebration for the winning goal. What's the problem with celebrating like that? Good for him.

Yeah what's wrong with celebrating your players? Bit harsh on the chavvy looking bugger.

Was just going to ask the same question now that I’ve seen it on MOTD. Ridiculous rule to book a manager for celebrating with his players. Obv drafted by yet another suit who’s never played the game.

Fun police, of course. Doubt Maresca cares though. That was a lovely moment for him and the players.

It's not a bloated squad, we are allowed the same squad size as everyone else, it's not hard to understand.

Club world cup payment time with injuries isnt it - terrible run of muscular injuries suggesting lack of rest and lack of proper pre-season.

You had 6 first team CBs injured before having to resort playing any youth.

Whether they’re good or not is something else, but I find it funny to play the injury card when you have had lots of options.

Which is very surprising considering you spend a ton of money on CBs

Ridiculous

The "world champions" badge on their kit is getting more embarrassing by the week.

Among all the crazy, scattergun spending, which over time I had reluctantly started to acknowledge had accumulated some wonderful young talents, I didn’t really take notice of how poorly Chelsea put together their defensive options.

Fofana, Adarabioyo, Colwill, Badiashile, Acheampong and Chalobah is a pretty underwhelming - but very large - group of CBs. Plus there’s now Hato added to it, and Disasi out on loan.

Fofana is perpetually injured, and makes Reece James look reliable. Colwill is a player I have seen as a future “best in class” CB, but also seems to be plagued by injuries, and is now out for the season. Badiashile seems to be made of glass and still very raw. Adarabioyo is fine as a squad player or starting for a mid table team. Chalobah only keeps coming back from loan because everyone else keeps getting injured, but by virtue of being fit is becoming their most important CB. Which is funny because they kept signing players to knock him down the pecking order, and he’s still ended up being a starter. And Acheampong looks like he’ll be good, but he’s 18, so you have to be patient.

I’d be amazed if Chelsea don’t throw an 8 year contract at Guehi come the summer.

Saw they started with Garnacho and Guiu today, supported by the misfiring Pedro. Not surprised they struggled.

Sanchez; James, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Enzo; Estevao, Palmer, Neto; J.Pedro is a really good team when everyone is fit. Especially when you consider they still have Gusto, 11,000 CBs, Lavia, Santos, Essugo, Gittens, Delap and Garnacho to bring off the bench. Yet somehow the forward options, despite what they’ve spent, feel underwhelming. Gittens, Garnacho, Guiu (triple G) all feel raw and of middling quality to me. Jackson, for all his idiosyncrasies, is better than all three - by some distance - in my estimation. Likewise, I’d rather have Nkunku or Madueke in the squad over Garnacho or Gittens.

I see Maresca taking a lot of flak, but he’s (a) dealing with a fair few injuries and (b) constantly dealing with an ever changing squad, one which is chocked full of very young, and often raw players. There are going to be inconsistencies. The pressure on Caicedo, Enzo and Palmer to always be fit and firing is immense, and just not possible.
