Sounds strange she went from appearing 'severely disabled' to suddenly brandishing a gun at the officers.

Here's a thought. Why don't we just get rid of guns??

The article mentions that she accused Clooney of blacklisting her after she made claims about sexism/racism on the set of ER.

What a tragic story. Literal riches to rags.

How does one go from checking the health of a person to shooting them?

Quite novel isn't it?? Thought it up all by myself. Too simple for the Americans to grasp though. If she'd been brandishing a knife, or a baseball bat, she would have got tasered, been sore for a day and still here to tell the tale.

From the little information we have this sounds like suicide by cop to me.

From what I've heard it wasn't a real gun, but looked enough like one.

Yeah some type of BB gun from what the Sheriff said. Still a sad indictment on the gun culture over there though, where you don't even really need to have a gun to get mown down by cops to be fair.

To be fair, they'll shoot you if you pull any kind of weapon/potential weapon on them.

Don't they have tasers/stun guns over there?? Taking a pop at someone should always be a last resort. There's no justification for shooting someone brandishing any other weapon than a firearm/explosive device.

The cops like to refer to the 21 foot rule. Basically the theory is that a person with an edged weapon can run up to and stab an officer whose waepon is holstered before they can draw and fire. They don't mess around. Shoot first, worry about it later.

As for tasers, I'm not sure. Police seem to have scaled back the use of tasers recently, possibly after all of those youtube videos of people being tased.

Showing a gun is legally interpreted as using deadly force and a cop is entirely justified in returning with gunfire until the suspect is dead. Pretty much every American knows that you don't show a gun, real or not, to the police.

This is BB gun that resembles a semi-automatic handgun which you can buy at any Walmart.
They say she was 'gravely [mentally] disabled' and after 90 minutes of talks refused to cooperate with a mental health clinician.
She reached for a weapon and the officers had a split second decision to save their lives and the clinician.
I don't see how you can fault them for that.

Where did I actually fault them for mowing her down?? I was actually referring to the general mindset and gun culture that exists in the US.

Yet the videos of people getting shot doesn't seem to have deterred them.

It's probably easier to justify using lethal force.

Tasers are a shit option anyway. Someone needs to develop non-lethal foaming incapacitator spray guns.

it's easier to vilify the police force, though it is warranted in occasions. If anyone is brandishing a gun, I expect the reaction to be normal.

it should be judged on case by case basis rather than generic guilty before proof kinda attitude, which seems to be the norm nowadays.

Not like it should come as a surprise to anyone what happens when you pull a gun on American cops.

Probably suicide by cop as mentioned before.

I mean, the question is why cops are the ones performing a "welfare check" on an old woman in the first place - that seems ripe for abuse (kind of like SWATting)
