Yes, but then there are multiple strikers who are great at that and have had massive success with that. Like Jamie Vardy.
I don't think anyone denies that Jamie Vardy was a good/great striker. Aubameyang is another one.

Man City have a 22 year old striker, who's base level is already at Jamie Vardy's best. The thinking is that Haaland will get even better because he's an insane athlete (he's fecking huge), and has room to develop technically.

That's my biggest worry with him. How to keep that huge frame injury free in a sport where there is as much running as football.

Haaland is already better than Vardy ever was, and will only improve. a 27 year old Vardy was scoring 5 goals in all competitions in 36 matches. His career high is 24 goals in all competitions, and he's only hit 20 once in the last 4 seasons.
Haaland averages nearly a goal a match over the last 3 seasons and had 10 UCL goals as a 20 year old. I don't think they're comparable in terms of quality. Short of injuries, Haaland will get to 30 goals+ in 2nd gear.

I think if they had a foot race people would be surprised. Mbappe would win but it would be neck and neck.

Mbappe is much faster with the ball mind.
Agreed but Haaland has an exceptional burst of speed over a few yards which is usually all he'll need given City's usual slow, patient build up.
There's also his physicality, his ability to swat opposing CB's out of the way in his favour.
Both are wonderful talents and a great asset to their teams.

Haaland is very very fast.

If they sprint half a field, i actually think Haaland would get over first.

I’d say it’s a matter of distance; shorter ones: 30m; 50m; 60m, it’s Mbappè, but once the distance opens up: 100m; 150m and definitely by 200m, Haaland would come out on top.

It’s redundant on a football pitch though, where Mbappè is simply designed to look like the faster player, and relative to a football pitch, he is.

@Gio what say you?

Maybe look outside of Europe.?
There are very few players in Europe of Haaland's quality. There's certainly none outside of Europe. If they were as good as him they'd be playing in Europe.

That's fair. Simple question of biomechanics of a shorter versus a taller athlete. Mbappe's acceleration curve is sharper over 10-40m. He's built more like your typical 60m specialist, and gets to his top speed quicker with a quicker cadence. Meanwhile Haaland at 6ft 4' is closer to the leggy build of a typical 200m runner,. There is a caveat though. Haaland has extreme power which enables him to explode over 5 yards or so. He's blessed with the genetics to hold the under-6 world record for the standing long jump, which reflects @Gentleman Jim's point about his dynamism in small spaces, eg in finding gaps in the box.

Alf-Inge must have been shooting him up with roids and HGH since before he could walk.

I'd think so too.
Mbappe's acceleration is better, but Haaland has the even higher top speed.

He sometimes makes other players look they were in slow motion

I have wondered how long such a big body can withstand the rigours of all those explosive movements. His knees and calves in particular having double and triple force jolted through them.

In terms of the size to power ratio, he does veer into the Bolt level of freakishness (relative to a footballer) in that such a massive man is obviously going to kick on to a ridiculous top speed in full stride, but to even challenge smaller athletes out the gates is bizarre in the extreme. Haaland's top speeds aren't likely to be a surprise to many, but getting away in the first few steps is just freakish; we normally say that the larger/taller pacey players are rapid... once they get going... but I can't think of any (6'3"+) who are blistering out the traps like this kid.

Yeah he has a acceleration of a small guy for some reason. I'd say over the first 10 yards he leaves guys like Sane behind which is crazy.

I do worry about how his body holds up long term as he relies far more on his physical attributes than someone like zlatan for example.

I do have this fear for the kid that hell be practically done in his late 20s

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was quite broken by that age; most truly rapid players are done by that age or have emphatically modified their game; if not knees, then generally hamstrings destroy them and on the odd occasion, it’ll be the back that can no longer function.

Haaland already makes uncoachable runs and instinctively knows what to do and when, so I’d expect he can modify that aspect to not rely as heavily on pace, but being clean through for shots off what would have once been from those same runs will diminish, as we’ve seen with so many others.

Shearer was never as fast as Haaland, but he was once reliant on his pace to work angles for himself and played a very clean, breakaway game - he modified his game so much when he lost his pace, people who didn’t see his younger iteration swear he was always a hurly burly bruiser. Maybe Haaland will learn to use his body in the more conventional ways once/if his pace and athletic prowess diminishes. Relative to his size, he’s dire in basic Zlatan-sequel tussles and scrambles at the moment, but if forced to do the nitty gritty like so many others had to beyond a certain degradation, we’ll see what comes of that.

Not relevant to anything, but I wonder why Haaland - who was born in the UK and raised in Norway where people generally speak English very well - speaks a somewhat broken English with a sort of central European accent. It can´t from a couple of years in AustrIa and Germany, so I think it might be an image think. A bit like Sancho and, to a larger extent, Joey Barton in France.

Alot of good points here. Hes accleration seems a bit underrated. Combined with hes strenght its possible the freakiest guy on pace/power i seen in football. Yeah you have players with more ball control and so on. But theese runs without the ball looks just diffrent from the rest of the fast bunch...

Listened to his post match interview. His english is pretty much "norwegian level", even a bit better speedwise. The rest of it is due to his norwegian dialect, a bit Salzburg/ BVB, and his general short cut way of expressing himself. If you youtube "jærsk dialekt" you'll find the roots of his accent.

I'm surprised his acceleration would be underrated, the guy has freakish speed for his size, and with that mass moving, it's just a wrecking ball to contend with for defenders. The obvious concern is how his body will hold up with these acceleration, he's already had issues, but that's really the only thing that will stop him from being the best CF in the world someday soon, unless another freak prodigy steps up in the next few years which wouldn't surprise me given the talent that's coming out.

I am familiar with his Norwegian dialect, but still don´t think it translates to the way he speaks English.

Good point about Shearer. The second goal he scores here is just the first to come to mind because it was against us, but 6 years later and he probably wouldn't be scoring too many goals like this one. He changed his game so he could still get goals but they were usually of a different type.

There's no "norwegian way" of speaking english. This fellow is laconic and doesn't love interviews, which probably is the biggest influence.

Not with the right training regime. Pretty sure he will find the right balance on the agility/strength ratio to keep his body away from muscle stress injuries.

The guy is a beast and unfortunately for us he will fire city to even bigger heights, they could win the lot this year I am sad to say.In an interview when he was asked which game he is mostly looking forward to in the premie league he said it was against us.Hope we get our house in order before that game.or he will destroy us.

Likelihood of this fecker being a flop (or even floppish) for City is slim.

(Injuries - sure - but that wouldn't be a flop in the sense I mean.)

I suspect he's too good. He also seems to have the mentality (he won't be rattled by a goalless match here and there).

As usual wasn't involved in the build up. Foden really should have squared the ball for a simple tap in but chose to shoot. Showed his strength in assisting the first goal after a one-two with Gundo. Missed a decent chance just before he was subd off, miscued the shot. Had another half chance in the first half from an over the top ball from Cancelo, could have scored if he controlled the ball. Seemed a tad frustrated at times at KDB and Mahrez not looking for him. You can say his presence occupies the CBs so there is more space for the others. An average performance from the Big man.

Two completed passes - one assist.

I'd be alright with that.

(Unless he spent the match spraying stupid passes all over the place.)
