So the first pan-European Euro tournament is scheduled to kick off in Rome on June 12th. With Italy just announcing all their schools, colleges and universities are to be closed for two weeks, and the whole of Europe preparing for a potential epidemic, how certain are we this tournament will be allowed to happen? UEFA says they are confident in dealing with it, but if domestic matches are already being suspended and social gatherings are being curbed would it make sense to press ahead with a tournament where hundreds of thousands of people (if not millions) will be travelling to attend games?

I guess it’s just a waiting game right now. I personally think it will go ahead. UEFA will seek all possible avenues to ensure it does.

Personally if the virus is still spreading around rapidly as it is or God forbid gets worse, they have no option but to call it off.

They might shift the Rome games but I'm sure all will be fine by June.

Hosted by 12 different countries. Thousands of people from all backgrounds travelling. Perfect conditions for a virus to spread.

Just need some warm weather and it'll sort itself out. People always get colds/flu in this horrible crappy cold weather. As soon as the temperature rises they disappear for the majority.

If the spread continues like it does now, its no chance it will go ahead.

But countries are taking more and more steps to quarantine the spread, so hopefully it will work. Italy as of now is considering closing down schools and libraries. Games in serie A is already postponed.

If other countries get the same spread as Italy it will wont happen in the summer. Of that im sure. The risk is just to big.

There's nothing in it for anyone to play it behind closed doors, that won't happen.

Its amazing timing for the Euros to be setup like this for the first time and to have this going on, I can't see it taking place as things stand at the moment, and seem to be getting worse by the day.

my flights, hotel and match ticket are booked so it better go ahead!

But really who knows? Its still a few months away yet - my guess is that this virus outbreak will have been contained by then

UEFA won’t cancel it because of greed. The powers above may push for it to be cancelled.

I hope so, I'm supposed to be going to two of the Dublin games.

Maybe they'll limit games to fans from the country it's hosted in or something? Bit shit, but better than closed doors.

I was reading the other day that Japan could have the option to delay the olympics and it might be a consideration for this. I know delaying the Euros would cause massive disruption to the domestic schedule but it might happen. I really doubt they'll play the entire tournament behind closed doors, that would mean a huge loss for everyone involved but then again, some money is better than no money.

UEFA/FIFA will do everything in their power to keep it on, there's too much money on the line and their greedy.

I can't see the WHO or worldwide governments reacting favorably if the tournament goes ahead. Experts are already saying this virus will likely be with us into 2021, so for those saying it'll clear up by June (because of the warm weather   )haven't got a grasp of the situation.

By comparison, SARS in 2002 lasted 6 months, infected 8,000 people world wide and killed just under 800. COVID-19 has infected 90,000+ and killed 3,200 in 2 months. This is significantly worse.

EDIT:

By opinion is that it should be postponed until June 2021.

Did think that but the sudden surge in Southern Spain (where the weather is sunny and it's in 20s degree wise) is somewhat worrying.

Hopefully it peaks out soon, soon as cases drop things can look up again.

Think that's more people getting it in other areas then bringing it back home - as soon as we get on top of proper cleaning and isolation it'll die off fairly quickly.

You do realize that cold temperatures have nothing to do with cold/flu transmission? It's a virus, it doesn't care about temperature. "put a coat on or you'll catch a cold" is a wives tale.

Flu season is traditionally during the winter due to a few factors enabling 'easier' transmission:

1. Closer/longer contact with people confined within buildings.
2. There is less moisture in the air, which allows virus to be travel airborne easier.
3. Reduced exposure to sunlight negatively impacts our immune system

Packing 70,000 people together from multiple countries, a virus will spread no matter the weather.

I think if the spread of the virus gets a bit worse than this then it will probably be delayed. Even if you limit fans in stadiums, you aren't considering the players, the staff, the media and of course the fans who don't have tickets to the game but go anyway because they want to soak up the atmosphere and potentially get lucky. Too much risk.

I have a Euro trip planned around the Euros 2020.
Flight tickets from India and hotels, already booked.
1) Munich 2 days - Including Portugal Vs Germany
2) Prague 3 days
3) Budapest 3 days - Including Portugal Vs france.
4) Croatia 6 days

This is a dream vacation. 8 of us going, I have already spent around 3000 USD. I already have my leaves approved.

I really hope I can go.

The coronavirus scare will have died down by then. They’ll bring out a vaccine for it by the months end

Either that, or we will all be dead

Do you guys think it will go ahead with fans?

UEFA is considering ditching it's multi city format @esmufc07

Not a chance with fans IMO. Vaccine roll out is very slow in most countries across the world and by that point you'd expect all the phase 1 vaccines will be done, but thats such a small percentage of the overall population. We're talking about needing them to open doors for fans across the whole continent or world to mingle and attend games. Maybe limited capacity from fans who live in that city/country?

Multi city was a nice idea but the absolute worst time to do it though.

Should just get that Qatar World cup out of the way instead (who needs fans there anyway) and play this whenever we can make it into a post covid celebration. (Summer of 2023 maybe?)

If it doesn’t, how do they compensate some nations who rarely if ever had qualified before

Yes UEFA did open the dialogue for limited capacity.

I know in Canada they will essentially restrict you from doing things if you don't have proof of vaccination. As someone who has tickets for this tournament and someone who is against taking this vaccine, I wonder how this will play out for me.
