Euroleague is starting tommorrow!

As many of you know, this is considered the second best basketball competiton in the world, after NBA.

This competition has a curious story. It used to be a FIBA competition, and was supposed to be an elite competition, the best of the best. Unfortunatelly FIBA is too conservative and their management of this competition did not please the major leagues from Europe, who were accusing them to cause entropy on european basketball competitiveness.

At 2000 the major european clubs started a new association in order to make european basket goes forward. There was even two euroleagues that year, but FIBA Euroleague had to deal with lower quality clubs, though :D

The truth is, with this great competition even Real Madrid, who really didn't gamble that much on basketball, now is a top budget team. We have investors buying basketball clubs to participate here, like happened with Olimpia Milano.

And everyone has to admit, the results are encouraging. This competition keeps growing year after year, budgets are getting bigger, teams are playing better, the scouting level is quite good, more money involved, etc.

I really enjoy this competiton, more than I do NBA. Don't get me wrong: I'm perfectly aware that the technical level in NBA is miles above the Euroleague, for cultural reasons and mainly for budget reasons.

But I do fancy Euroleague because:
  1. The strategical part of the game is a bit deeper than NBA.
  2. The schedules fit better my european clock :)
  3. The crowds are amazing. You really can't find this elsewhere.

  • Josh Adams
  • Birkan Batuk
  • Krunoslav Simon
  • Brock Motum
  • Ricky Ledo
  • Onuralp Bitim
Brief notes:
Made a very solid season and have improved their squad. They had made major changes to their roster and judging their transfer activity I can see the manager wanted more height into the team.
They are usually a very solid team at home.

Arena:
  • Mediolanum Forum (12.700)
Manager
  • Simone Pianigiani
Players Retained:
  • Kaleb Tarczewski
  • Simone Fontecchio
  • Mantas Kalnietis
  • Zoran Dragic

Hired Players:

  • Marco Cusin
  • Cory Jefferson
  • Jordan Theodore
  • Patric Young
  • Vladimir Micov
  • Amath M'Baye
  • Andrew Goudelock
  • Dairis Bertans
Brief notes:
A very disappointing season by Milano, since they had one of the biggest budgets on Euroleague. This year they appointed an italian coach who made a fantastic job at Hapoel Tel Aviv. It will improve their teamplay for sure.
The squad suffered major changes, and by the names who were retained from last season you can see the coach wants to build an identity from scratch. Their acquisitions are quite solid.

Arena:
  • Fernando Buesa (15.504)
Manager
  • Pablo Prigioni
Players Retained:
  • Johannes Voigtmann
  • Tadas Sedekerskis
  • Rodrigue Beaubois
  • Ilimane Diop
  • Tornike Shengelia
  • Luca Vildoza
Hired Players:
  • Matt Janning
  • Patricio Garino
  • Jordan McRae
  • Jayson Granger
  • Marcelinho Huertas
  • Vincent Poirier
  • Janis Timma
  • Daniel Bordignon
Brief notes:
This team made a fantastic first half of the season, overachieving for most of the time, but then their production just took a dip.
They made a surprising appointment though: their most legendary player just became their new coach, a bit similar to Real Madrid appointing Zidane.
They have lost some key players, which probably shows that their budget is lower for this season. They have lost their key player Larking, who got transfered to Boston Celtics.
They made some interesting acquisitions though, like Granger, Garino and McRae (who got injured)

Arena:
  • Brose Arena (6.800)
Manager
  • Andrea Trinchieri
Players Retained:
  • Aleksej Nikolic
  • Lucca Staiger
  • Maodo Lo
  • Elias Harris
  • Patrick Heckmann
  • Leon Radosevic
Hired Players:
  • Quincy Miller
  • Ricky Hickman
  • Daniel Hackett
  • Augustine Rubit
  • Luka Mitrovic
  • Bryce Taylor
Brief notes:
Even thoug they did not made an over the top season at Euroleague, there clearly was some progress under this coach. The team was very close to reach the playoffs.

They were able to retain a good part of their squad from last season and made some good hirings like Quincy Miller, Ricky Hickman and Luka Mitrovic.

They are quite an unpredictable team. They are usually the underdogs, but they seem to win a good lot of matches.

Arena:
  • Kombak Arena (18.386)
Manager
  • Dusan Alimpijevic
Players Retained:
  • Nemanja Dangubic
  • Branko Lazic
  • Ognjen Dobric
  • Petar Rakicevic
  • Milko Bjelica
Hired Players:
  • Pero Antic
  • Taylor Rochestie
  • Mathias Lessort
  • James Feldeine
  • Nikola Radicevic
  • Nikola Jovanovic
  • Stefan Jankovic
  • Marko Keselj
Brief notes:
Even thoug they are the lowest budget from Euroleague, their tactical and team work is quite wonderful.
But being a lower budget team means they will loose a lot of key players year after year, and this year was no exception by letting Jenkins go to Khimki, among other good players who left for bigger clubs.
They almost qualified for playoffs last season, and they will make their opponents run for their money.
But bare in mind that this club scouting network is quite good. They seem to find several good players at low cost prices.
They hired former star, who is already a veteran Pero Antic. He was a top player in his prime, but I doubt he can still make a difference.
Taylor Rochestie was a good hiring thoug and he will give them some good points. They had made a rational approach on the market by scouting D-League and bringing some former players.

Arena:
  • CSKA Arena (30.000)
Manager
  • Dimitris Itoudis
Players Retained:
  • Nando De Colo
  • Vitaly Fridzon
  • Semen Antonov
  • Pavel Korobkov
  • Andrey Vorontsevich
  • Cory Higgins
  • Mikhail Kulagin
  • Victor Khryapa
  • Nikita Kurbanov
  • Kyle Hines
Hired Players:
  • Othello Hunter
  • Alan Makiev
  • Sergio Rodriguez
  • Leo Westermann
  • Will Clyburn
Brief notes:
Clearly one of the top 3 favourites to win the Euroleague, they were also able to retain their top players. And their transfer activity was top notch. They have one of the best players in the game, Nando de Colo. He has quality to play at the NBA, but he's not interested in leaving CSKA, since he's the affiction idol. Sergio Rodriguez is a fantastic and expensive hiring and Philadelphia was much surprised that he decided not to continue there. Westermann was one of Zalgiris best players. Plus, they "stolen" Clyburn to Darussafaka, a player that will give them many points.

Arena:
  • Palau Blaugrana (7.585)
Manager
  • Sito Alonso
Players Retained:
  • Sergi Martinez
  • Rodions Kurucs
  • Victor Claver
  • Pau Ribas
  • Juan Carlos Navarro
  • Aleksandar Vezenkov
  • Petteri Koponen
  • Ante Tomic
  • Marc Garcia
Hired Players:
  • Adam Hanga
  • Kevin Seraphin
  • Rakim Sanders
  • Phil Pressey
  • Pierre Oriola
  • Adrien Moerman
  • Thomas Heurtel
Brief notes:
What a nightmare season last year. Either domestically and continental competitions. The squad was quite good, but they just didn't played as a team. They had appointed former Baskonia coach, who made a very good season last year, but failed in the final moments. Nonetheless, Baskonia was one of the strongest teams of Euroleague's regular season.
Their transfer market was quite good. They stolen Hanga to Baskonia. Hanga is one of Europe's best players, and also stolen Thomas Heurtel to Anadolu.
they also hired one of Valencia best players, Oriola.
A good choice. The spanish basketball league is actually a very good one.

Arena:
  • Ülker Sports (13.800)
Manager
  • Zeljko Obradovic
Players Retained:
  • Baris Hersek
  • Melih Mahmutoglu
  • Pero Antic
  • Kostas Sloukas
  • Egehan Arna
  • James Nunnally
  • Jan Vesely
  • Nikola Kalinic
  • Bobby Dixon
  • Ahmet Duverioglu
  • Luigi Datome
Hired Players:
  • Sinan Guler
  • Nicolo Melli
  • Marko Guduric
  • Brad Wanamaker
  • Jason Thompson
Brief notes:
Title holders Fenerbahce not only retained most of their key players, they also added more quality. They also have the plus of having one of the best coaches of the sport.
They have signed a symbol of eternal rival Galatasaray, Guler, who is an excelent key passer. They also hired one top Euroleague player from Brose Bamberg, Nico Melli. Expensive hiriing, but it brings quality. And they also made a transfer for the long term, getting Guduric from Crvena Zvezda, one of the most promising young players at the moment.
They keep quality in their squad and they are certainly one of the three favourites to win it.

Arena:
  • Khimk Arena (18.636)
Manager
  • Georgios Bartzokas
Players Retained:
  • Alexey Shved
  • Ruslan Pateev
  • Viacheslav Zaytsev
  • Egor Vyaltsev
  • Dmitry Sokolov
  • Stanislav Ilnitskiy
  • Sergey Monia
  • Marko Todorovic
Hired Players:
  • Ivan Viktorov
  • Malcolm Thomas
  • James Anderson
  • Tyler Honeycutt
  • Andrey Zubkov
  • Charles Jenkins
  • Stefan Markovic
Brief notes:
Runners-up of VTB league, they had made a mixed season. They had a solid playoff performance, but overall they were not that impressive. They made a major investment though but strangely appointed former Barcelona coach, who made a very disapointing season overall.
Although they invested some money, their irings kinda feel meh... Even though Honeycutt is an excelent addtion of quality and Jenkins is a household name.

Arena:
  • Yad Eliyahu (10.383)
Manager
  • Neven Spahija
Players Retained:
  • Itay Segev
  • Yovel Zoosman
Hired Players:
  • Artsiom Parakhouski
  • Norris Cole
  • Karam Mashour
  • DeAndre Kane
  • Jonah Bolden
  • DeShaun Thomas
  • Pierre Jackson
  • Michael Roll
  • Alex Tyus
  • Jake Cohen
  • John DiBartolomeo
Brief notes:
Jesus! This was quite a troubled transfer market. They made a full cleaning of the squad, retaining only two players!!! They were very poor last season. This team usually has a very decent budget available every year, so money is not really a problem.
They made a conservative appointment though. Spahija is a veteran coach, but he has a lot of experience either at Euroleague and NBA, though.
As it's kinda normal, they usually hire mostly american players. They brought Norris Cole, who had a solid career back at NBA before wenting to China for those millionaire contracts they offer. They also hired Mashour, who is a top rebounder and the israelian league MVP DiBartolomeo.

Arena:
  • Peace and friendship stadium (14.940)
Manager
  • Giannis Sfairopoulos
Players Retained:
  • Vassilis Toliopoulos
  • Vassilis Spanoulis
  • Ioannis Papapetrou
  • Dimitrios Agravanis
  • Nikola Milutinov
  • Georgios Printezis
  • Kostas Papanikolaou
  • Vangelis Mantzaris
Hired Players:
  • Hollis Thompson
  • Brian Roberts
  • Jamel McLean
  • Kim Tillie
  • Georgios Bogris
  • Janis Strelnieks
Brief notes:
The eternal candidates to win the title, they are usually always a very competitive team, even if they need to cut the budget.
They have have a good coach, they usually play solid basketball and they have some very good players at their ranks.
They have one of the greatest players of the game, Spanoulis, a household name, and usually the greek players have very decent quality.
Made some good hirings like Janis Strelnieks, and Brian Roberts who has a decent career at NBA.

Arena:
  • Olympic Indoor Hall (18.989)
Manager
  • Xavi Pascual
Players Retained:
  • Chris Singleton
  • K.C. Rivers
  • Eleftherios Bochoridis
  • Nikos Pappas
  • James Gist
  • Georgios Kalaitzakis
  • Kenny Gabriel
  • Nick Calathes
Hired Players:
  • Matt Lojeski
  • Dinos Mitoglou
  • Marcus Denmon
  • Thanasis Antetokounmpo
  • Ian Vougioukas
  • Lukas Lekavicius
  • Zach Auguste
Brief notes:
Another classic candidates, but their budget is dropping in the last years. but still a very strong team. Their home is like a fortress. They made a solid season last year. Not winning any major title, but battled well for every competition they were into.
They made some interesting hirings, like Marcus Denmon who made a very good season at turkish league, and brought Lekavicius from Zalgiris (poor bastards, they lost so many key players.).

Arena:
  • Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid (15.000)
Manager
  • Pablo Laso
Players Retained:
  • Anthony Randolph
  • Rudy Fernandez
  • Luka Doncic
  • Jonas Maciulis
  • Felipe Reyes
  • Gustavo Ayon
  • Dino Radoncic
  • Jaycee Carroll
  • Sergio Llull
  • Trey Thompkins
  • Jeffrey Taylor
Hired Players:
  • Facundo Campazzo
  • Ognjen Kuzmic
  • Santiago Yusta
  • Fabien Causeur
Brief notes:
Another top 3 favourite to win the title, they are a very interesting team to watch. They play that beautiful free-flow basketball, but unfortunatelly they don't have the quality depth to doing it all game.
They were able to keep one of the best youth players in the whole world, Luka Doncic. It's amazing that he's only 18 and they have the amazing Sergio Lull, who unfortunatelly is currently injured. In fact, if he was less injury prone he would easily be a superstar worldwide.
They made an interesting market: kept most of the key players and added some potential youth players to an already talented squad.
Yusta is a NextGen player and Campazzo also has some potential, but it's relatively small for a basketball player (1.80m)
The other two hirings was bringing players who performed well at Euroleague from Bamberg and Crvena Zvezda.

Arena:
  • Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena (13.000)
Manager
  • Joan Plaza
Players Retained:
  • Viny Okouo
  • Alberto Diaz
  • Daniel Diez
  • Nemanja Nedovic
  • Adam Waczynski
  • Jeff Brooks
  • Carlos Suarez
  • Dejan Musli
  • Mo Soluade
Hired Players:
  • James Augustine
  • Ray McCallum
  • Sasu Salin
  • Giorgi Shermadini
  • Dragan Milosavljevic
Brief notes:
A very good season. They won the Eurocup and were involved in major decisions at Spain. They have a very decent team and made some rational hirings, by bringing players with Euroleague experience and brought Salin, who is an excelent shooter.

Arena:
  • Pabellón Fuente de San Luis (8.500)
Manager
  • Txus Vidorreta
Players Retained:
  • Will Thomas
  • Antoine Diot
  • Bojan Dubljevic
  • Guillem Vives
  • Rafa Martinez
  • Fernando San Emeterio
  • Joan Sastre
  • Alberto Abalde
Hired Players:
  • Sam Van Rossom
  • Tibor Pleiss
  • Erick Green
  • Latavious Williams
  • Andres Rico
Brief notes:
They were so close of doing such a perfect season. They almost won the Eurocup and made the amazing feature of winning the spaninsh league against a super-team of Real Madrid. And it's even a greater feature since they don't have a top budget. They have lost their coach, though. Vidorreta was a rational appointment, since he did well with an underdog.
Valencia's hirings are not that uplifting, but they placed their bets in Andres Rico, who is a young player with a lot of potential to offer.

Arena:
  • Žalgiris Arena (15.688)
Manager
  • Sarunas Jasikevicius
Players Retained:
  • Kevin Pangos
  • Martynas Varna
  • Paulius Valinskas
  • Paulius Jankunas
  • Martynas Sajus
  • Arturas Milaknis
  • Antanas Kavaliauskas
  • Edgaras Ulanovas
Hired Players:
  • Axel Toupane
  • Dee Bost
  • Brandon Davies
  • Aaron White
  • Vasilije Micic
  • Gytis Masiulis
Brief notes:
Like Crvena Zvezda, this is a low budget club that will fail to retain many of their key players at the end of the season. They had a chance to get to the playoffs, but ended up failing.
Their hirings are cirurgical, but they usually find some good market oportunities and the lithuanian player base is usually good, which makes things easier.
They hired Axel Toupane, an NBA outcast that will help them through the season, and got one of the french league main players Dee Bost.

Game Day 1 - Starts at 12/10/2017
  • Anadolu EFES - Real Madrid : 12/10 19:00 CET
  • CSKA Moscow - Milano : 12/10 19:00 CET
  • Brose Bamberg - Maccabi Tel Aviv : 12/10 20:00 CET
  • Unicaja Malaga - Fenerbahce : 12/10 20:00 CET
  • Khimki - Valencia : 13/10 19:00 CET
  • Zalgiris Kaunas - Crvena Zvezda : 13/10 19:00 CET

I do try and watch Euroleague when I can and do enjoy it. But unfortunately never get the time to follow it full time. Would love a strong British team in the competition.

It will be possible if the sport grows on England. Look at Germany: they used to suck at basketball and nowadays they have a very good league.
If eventually there is an English Basketball Premier League jumping on the bandwagon of the football success, they can create a competitive league and eventually get an Euroleague license or qualifying spot.

I do go to Newcastle BBL games when I can (my closest local team) but the standard is very poor in comparison to the Euroleague. Like you say, I'm just hoping it gets a big investment at some point because the last Olympics showed that Team GB does have potential.

Investment is a big part, but also including basketball as part of the sports menu at UK would be a big boost. It is a nice sport to watch, with a lot of action and when you think the game is won, the other team recovers a 15+ points disadvantadge :D

Basketball is growing all over Europe, but in the UK (and Portugal unfortunatelly for me) it seems stalled.

For example, the French league has grown into a very decent level league. Not a top league, but a good one nonetheless. Even nordic leagues are getting better. Denmark and Finland have a few decent teams. They are still underdogs, but they have the ability to go through the qualifying playoffs of FIBA competitions.

Basketball is on par with Football as my favourite sport, Been a fan of the NBA since early 90's when NBA Jam got me hooked :D.

It helps that we are getting more and more Euro players in the NBA which is raising the profile of the sport here. Just look at this years draft, There was Markkannen, Ntilikina, TJ Leaf, Anunoby (who is English ) and Pasečņiks who all went in the First round alone.

Here in the US NBATV has a Euroleague game of the week I occasionally watch. I used to catch games when I can back when ESPN3/WatchESPN broadcast Euoleague games. I am going to try to see some Real Madrid matches this season to watch future New York Knick Luka Doncic. And I will recognize most of the Americans playing for Euroleague sides based on how much I watch the NBA. Plus I know some guys who played ball in Europe.

Basketball really progressed a lot here. We finally start to produce players with enough quality to be part of a NBA Roster. I almost dare to say if there was a USA NT vs All Stars Europe, it would be a decently even match. Off course the US NT would probably win 60% of those matches, but still, there is talent enough to put a fight.
And an All-Star Europea team would do a fantastic mixed zone defending that would give them a real hard-time.

Is always a nice choice to watch Real Madrid, CSKA or Fenerbahce. They always play some lovely basketball.
Just a small question: why does NBA doesn't allow zone defending? I know there is the 3 second zone rule, but that's just man marking in disguise.

I'm asking this because zonal marking is much more effective in every collective sports where two teams share the same field, because it reduces the impact of an individual error. Why was it banned?

Zone defense was banned for a while in the NBA but, they changed the rule in 2006. And the NBA has been a lot more exciting since then. It was one of the reasons USA Basketball was struggling for a while.

Nice! I thought the 3 second without marking someone rule was still being used. That decision gave NBA a whole new strategical depth, which is good for everyone. Players have less possibilty of getting isolated in one on ones against the star player of the opposition team.

If there was such a rule in football (soccer), the guy who had the task to man-mark Messi or Ronaldo would ask for substitution after 10 minutes :D

There is still the 3 seconds in the paint rule. But, overall zone is allowed in the NBA. The illegal defense rule lead to a lot of boring isolation basketball in the NBA. It is why we used to get scores in the 70s consistently.

A little off-topic, but in case you guys have interest you can also follow ACB League (spanish league) which is a very balanced league with well drilled teams.

Another sugestion is the ABA League. It shows that you can have a top league without having major budgets. Crvenza Zvezda budget is the highest on the league and it's really a little budget when compared to Euroleague teams. ABA league is a league that joins the elite of Adriatic clubs (Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Macedonia). It is quite a good league, since the basketball culture is very strong on those countries, which means that, for example, the "average" serbian player is much better than the average french or italian player.

Tonight Previews:

Anadolu EFES - Real Madrid : 12/10 19:00 CET
This is going to be interesting. Real Madrid are clear favourites to win, but Anadolu is very strong at home. Real will need to be ready to play until the last minute. And the task is tougher, since Lull is injured form more a few more months. He was Madrid best player, not easy to replace him.

CSKA Moscow - Milano : 12/10 19:00 CET
Unless Milano motivation levels come into play, it will be an easy win for CSKA.

Olympiakos - Baskonia: 12/10 20:00 CET
Olympiakos are very solid at home and Baskonia lost Larkin in this transfer period. The home team are clear favourites, not only for having a better squad but also because they are title battlers.

Brose Bamberg - Maccabi Tel Aviv : 12/10 20:00 CET
So many changes in Maccabi team makes this game a bit unpredictbale. Judging by last year, it would be a victory by Bamberg, but I think it's very difficult to predict this game due to a total squad restruturation from the israelis.

Unicaja Malaga - Fenerbahce : 12/10 20:00 CET
Game of the day in my opinion. A very tough match for title holders Fenerbahce. They will probably win, but there is a good chance that Malaga can surprise them. They are a very tough team and usually defend very well. Fenerbahce must be at the top of their game if they want to win this match.

Nice start from Real Madrid. They are using a lot of "substitute" players in this first quarter, but they are still dominating. I think it's going to be an easier game for them than I thought.

Shocking 1st Quarter for CSKA. The most expensive squad from the Euroleague is being terrible on the defensive process.

It was a strangely easy game for Real. Anadolu made a very solid season last "year".

CSKA had the advantadge of having the most expensive squad ever on Europe, with a 46.5M € budget. They have a bigger budget than their football team :D

Maccabi has shown that making a squad revolution is starting to payoff. They have a totally new squad and staff and it was kinda unpredictable what to expect form them.

Olympiacos being Olympiacos, keeps showing that their home is a fortress. They are not a very offensive team, they are quite cautious approaching the game (as you can see by their results). But they are like a spider team: they tangle the web and when the opposition realizes, they are scarcing their attacking options.

Unicaja - Fenerbahce was the game of the day. Fenerbahce is the title holder, but Malaga is a very solid team, even without a major budget. They won by one point, recovering a 10 point deficit in the last quarter!

It looks promising this year.

Didn't had time on Friday to update this topic, so here it is, the gameday 1 update.

Zalgiris Kaunas won by a narrow margin to Crveza Zvezda, in a duel between the teams with lowest budgets from Euroleague. It was a very even match and the new players have started to show some good service.

Khimki started well their Euroleague adventure, beting spanish champions Valencia. This could be a either side game, since both teams fought well.

Barcelona made a glorious match, beating Panathinaikos quite easy. Will they prove that last season was 1 out of 100?

Results Matchday 1:
  • Barcelona 98 - 71 Panathinaikos
    Khimki 75 - 70 Valencia
    Zalgiris Kaunas 78 - 76 Crvena zvezda
    Unicaja 68 - 67 Fenerbahce
    Bamberg 71 - 88 Maccabi Tel Aviv
    Olympiakos 75 - 64 Baskonia
    Anadolu Efes 74 - 88 Real Madrid
    CSKA Moscow 93 - 84 Milano

One more week of Euroleague is starting. Today's games are:

Maccabi Tel Aviv - Baskonia
This is going to be a decent game, but Maccabi has the edge. They have made a major investment and Baskonia lost their most influent player and their manager. Maccabi will probably win with some difficulties, but they will do it.

Panathinaikos - Brose Bamberg:
unless Bamberg plays 200% focused, it will be an easy win for Panathinaikos. They are a very strong team, even more at home.

Milano - Fenerbahce:
Some expectations here. Milano made a very good game at Moscow, loosing mainly because CSKA has much better options at the bench. Let's see if they can create similar troubles to Fenerbahce. They can make a surprise here.

Real Madrid - CSKA Moscow:
Game of the week:
two powerhouses facing each other. Madrid will have the home edge, but with so many outstanding players it's going to be a very tough game.

Yesteraday results:

Maccabi Tel Aviv 74 - 68 Baskonia
Very valanced match, but Maccabi got the edge. Baskonia gave them hard times, but overall the match was controlled

Panathinaikos 93 - 83 Brose Bamberg:
Easy win for Panathinaikos, who could afford to slow down the rythm in periods of the game.

Milano 96 - 92 Fenerbahce:
A very balanced game. Milano deserved the win, but lost on ET. They are playing really really well and could have won both games against very tough opponents.

Real Madrid 82 - 69 CSKA Moscow:
Shameful result for CSKA. The teams are very even in talent, but CSKA has the better overall squad. It was quite easy for Real to win this game withouth needing to push too much.

Final results matchday 2 (didn't had time to get the here at Friday):

Crvena Zvezda 90:82 Barcelona
The first major result for Red Star, and against Barcelona, who is usually a powerhouse. Crvena Zvezda shpwing that just because you have the lowest budget doesn't mean you should be submiss.

Khimki 85:77 Zalgiris Kaunas
Some expectactions before the match, since Khimki is doing this competition for the first time. In the end of the day, the "bigger budget" advantadge won.

Olympiakos 80:75 Unicaja Malaga
Olympiakos showing once again that their home place is a fortress. A solid win against a very tough team.

Valencia 78:71 Anadolu
A very cautious match by both teams. Valencia got the edge, but they really should had done better agains Anadolu. I know Anadolu is a solid team, but Valencia being ACB winners should have known better.

Today's previews:

Khimki - Crvenza Zvezda

Khimki is the favourite to win this match, but Crvena Zvezda is one of the surprise results kings! They are battlers and will fight 'till the end.

Maccabi Tel Aviv - Olympiakos
This is going to be the match of the day. Maccabi seems to be back to "good old times", but Olympiakos is an eternal title candidate and will go full power.

Barcelona - Zalgiris Kaunas
Barcelona seemed to be back on track, but they got a tremendous defeat at Beograd. They should win it easy, but which Barça will be at this game?

Real Madrid - Milano
Probably an easy win for Real, but Milano has proven to be a tough opponent this season.

Do you guys think Doncic will be the #1 pick? He's quite unreal for his age, but he's not too athletic so I could see NBA teams being careful due to that. Especially since there's quite a lot of good college players this year.

I heard Musa is also going to the draft.

Is it the second most popular sport in Portugal?
Unfortunatelly not. It's probably on par with handball, more or less. I even think handball has more supporters, though.

The most popular sports beside footbal are Futsal and Rink Hockey.

And Doncic is probably the best player not currently in the NBA right now.
He's already earning a major paycheck, about 2:00h flight from Madrid to Ljublana and he is playing in one of Europe best clubs. I'm sure he already had offers from NBA, but from what I see he's quite happy at Madrid and only an over the top offer will change this.

Results of the week (round 3 & 4. There was a double round last week)

highlights can be seen at Euroleague youtube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Euroleague/videos

Round 3 Results:
Unicaja 76 - 80 Bamberg
The first surprise of the week came from Spain. We all know Unicaja doesn't have a wide budget, but they were one of the most solid team's last season at ACB league and won the Eurocup. This game was tight, but Bamberg got the edge in almost every aspect.

Baskonia 63 - 80 Valencia
We were all curious to see how Baskonia would react to this terrible season start. Well, they reacted poorly. If they continue with this loosing strek, they can get their license revoked.

Fenerbahce 81 - 70 Anadolu Efes
Fenerbahce showing that it is very difficult to beat them at their home. And Anadolu did an interesting game, but they fell short.

CSKA Moscow 81 - 63 Panathinaikos
The victory is not surprising, but the points difference is. Panathinaikos usually makes it tougher for everyone, so it's kinda surprise to see them loose so easily.

Barcelona 75 - 81 Zalgiris Kaunas
A fantastic result for Zalgiris who show that having the second smaller budget doesn't mean you can't have results. The game was tight, but Zalgiris was very organized and frustrated Barcelona gameplan.

Real Madrid 100 - 90 Milano
Another good game by Milano. Was a tight match almost until the end, but Madrid's squad is so good it gives the the edge.

Maccabi Tel Aviv 68 - 69 Olympiakos
A very good result from Olympiakos at a tough home. Maccabi keeps showing that they have improved, but loosing to Olympiakos is something "normal", so no worries for now.

Khimki 85 - 78 Crvena Zvezda
A very tight game, but Khimki squad0s depth made the difference. Crvena Zvezda has the smaller budget, but they really know how to assemble a squad.

Round 4 Results:
Valencia 91 - 53 Unicaja
Another shocking result. We all expect Valencia to win, but not this way. This was a total thrashing and it could had been worst, hadn't Valencia taken the foot out of the gas.

Panathinaikos 70 - 68 Fenerbahce
Tight match as usual. It's never easy to play at Pana fortress. Even for the title holders Fenerbahce. This was a very even match, that could had gone either way.

Bamberg 78 - 72 Baskonia
Another tight match. Baskonia changed coach after such a terrible season start, but they failed to get a result here. Bamberg were overall better, no complains here.

Anadolu Efes 80 - 98 CSKA Moscow
When CSKA is on fire, there's little their opponents could do. They were having some poor away results, but this was a confortable win against a tough opponent.

Milano 78 - 74 Barcelona
Barcelona tried to react, but this season's Milano is a very proactive team. The result could had gone either way, but Milano deserved it.

Olympiakos 92 - 75 Khimki
First "fire test" for Khimki. Not a shock that they failed though. Olympiakos is a top 3 team, so this is really nothing shocking.

Crvena Zvezda 87-84 Maccabi Tel Aviv
Maccabi really improved from last season and nearly got a result here. Crvenza Zvezda always play with passion and I think that gave them the edge in this game.

Zalgiris Kaunas 66 - 87 Real Madrid
Tough game for Zalgiris. Same as CSKA, when Real Madrid puts their foot on the gas, it's very difficult to retaliate when you're a small budget team

Finally the update. I am a bit busy at my work so until the end of the year I will not be able to carry the updates in real time. Sorry about that.

Round 5 was a fantastic round, with a lot of surprising results, showing once again Euroleague has a lot to offer.

Barcelona 73 - 51 Olympiakos
A victory from a poor form Barcelona is not exactly a surprise, since they are the home side. But beating a team like Olympiakos so convincingly, that was remarkable.
Seraphin and Oriola leaded Barcelona to a very good victory. Oriola was really a good catch from Valencia. He's been performing very well and I suspect NBA might come for him.

Anadolu Efes 74 - 79 Unicaja
Now this was quite surprising. I know Unicaja is not a bad team, but they are clearly a team with limited resources and funds. They are coping quite well, to be honest. They are a team that heavilly rellies on teamwork, their team stats are quite even, but Stimac from Efes was clearly the MVP tonight even though his team lost.

CSKA Moscow Zalgiris 94 - 91 Kaunas
The highest budget team facing the second lowest budget team. And the game was surprisingly balanced. Zalgiris could had got something out of this game.
But the difference between both teams was Nando De Colo once again. He really is a world class player and having a player like him makes it easier for everyone arround him.

Real Madrid 80 - 86 Khimki M.
Shocking result. Khimki has a really nice team, with Shved being one of the best players at Europe right now. But still a major feature winning at Madrid.
Shved was a total killer tonight and clearly the MVP imho. Props for Gustavo Ayón who made a fantastic game.

Maccabi Tel Aviv 79 - 68 Milano
Two teams who had made horrible seasons are now renewed. There was a lot of expectations to see which team improved the most. Maccabi was miles ahead, dominated the game and won easily.
Tyus and Thomas totally dominated the game and made the whole difference tonight.

Baskonia 85 - 84 Panathinaikos
Baskonia season start has been a nightmare, either in Euroleague and ACB. This was a game that could had gone either side, but manager change seems to have worked for Baskonia. They made a solid season last year, but lost Larkin, who was their starlet.
Jason Granger showed up once again. Despite Baskonia poor season, his performances this season are a luxury.

Fenerbahce 79 - 66 Valencia
A lot of expectations behind this game aswell. Fenerbahce are the title holders, but Valencia is a very tough team and the actual ACB champions. Fenerbahce proved their strength and shown they are ready to battle for the final four once more.
Luigi Datome made a fantastic match and carried Fenerbahce lead.

Crvena Zvezda 69 - 75 Bamberg
Another major surprise. Even though Crvena are the lower budget from the competition, they are usually a very solid team at home. Surprise happened and it really wasn't that hard. Bamberg did a very reliable match and secured the win.
Taylor Rochestie made a fantastic match and was cleraly the MVP, despite the loss.

It's a surprise that Panathinaikos are outside the top 8. Off course we are just starting, but 1/6 of the regular season has been played already. On a good side, Khimki and Valencia seem to have upgraded Euroleague quality lot, imposing themselves as possible playoff spoters.

He most certainly will. His dad said this is the next step and they expect him to go #1.

The only way I can see him not declaring is if he has a poor season and he feels he's not ready.

But I do think he will only go for a very good offer and if he feels ready. He already earns very well at Madrid, and the living cost in Spain is considerably low than moving to US.
He is doing a very good career management so far, no need to rush. He will get to NBA, though.

Round 6 results:

Unicaja 79 - 65 Crvena Zvezda
Another win by Unicaja, who's showing some battling spirit, even though they are a upper middle class team at Spain. They faced the lowest budget of Euroleague and they did quite qell. This is a well drilled team, who plays a cautious style, but it works.
Nedovic was amazing in this game and his performance really made the difference.

Bamberg 57-80 Fenerbahce
Before the match, it looked like Bamberg had a chance. After the first quarter Fenerbahce showed otherwise. Jan Vesely made another fantastic match, showing he is one of Eruoleague top players.

Olympiakos 62 - 70 Panathinaikos
The greatest derby from Greece, both teams played very caytious, extending their attacking time to the time limits. Panathinaikos made a surprising result.
Panathinaikos won the game but Strelnieks from Olympiakos was the most impressive performance tonight. He tried hard tonight.

Khimki M. 91 - 90 Baskonia
By both teams forms, it looked like an easy game for Khimki, but it was a very even match. Baskonia seems to be improving after the manager change.
But a team who has a player like Shved, it increases the probabilty of winning the game. He's on fire.

Barcelona 85 - 89 Anadolu Efes
A shocking result, even for Barcelona standards this season. Anadolu has been playing poor and no one was expecting this coming. Stimac made a fantastic match and was the major difference between both teams.

Milano 62 - 94 Zalgiris Kaunas
A shocking result not by Zalgiris victory, which could had happened, but by the difference shown between both teams. This was a very strong game by the lithuanians, they pushed really hard and made Milano commit tons of mistakes.
Pangos made a very complete match and dominated in all areas.

Maccabi Tel Aviv 90 - 83 Real Madrid
What a difference this Maccabi team from last season. They are performing very well again and if they keep it like this they might get to the final four this year.
Even though Real lost, Doncic made a very good game, and if Real had another player at his level tonight they could had fought more. Real misses Lull a lot.

CSKA Moscow 94 - 67 Valencia
It started so well, looking to be a very even game. Then CSKA recoverd and it was an all out attack ran over. Nando de Colo showing why he is one of the world's best players.

He would be in a rookie contract anyway, so it cannot be a very good offer. In NBA, seniority is pretty much as important as being a great player.

Of course, even a rookie contract will be much more than he earns in Madrid. If I am not mistaken, Teodosic was the best payed player in Europe, and he was earning 3m per year or so. An average NBA player who is there on his second contract gets more money.

It's not so linear.

Look at Nando de Colo case: he already had offers to return to NBA, but he snubbed it. He's getting a 10M€ three seasons contract base salaray + performance bonus + titles bonus.
He got a lot of bonus when signing (house, house services + private chef, car driver, private jet to visit family in France, etc) and agreed with CSKA to have a defined role in the squad.
He said until 2019 he'll be there because he's loving the club, the fans (CSKA arena fans are quite good)

Sometimes money isn't all. Sometimes you stay where you like to work.

And in NBA he woudn't get this kind of support :P

Which is 3.3m per year right? Around 10 times less than a very top NBA player, and I guess well below the average of a non-rookie player.

Of course, money isn't all. But if some player really thinks that he is great, then he needs to go to NBA. Any NBA team would beat with ease an all star Euroleague team. The quality is so much higher there.

The real problem though, is that superstars from Euroleague in most cases can become only bit-part players in mediocre NBA teams. We have seen a shitload of European greats miserably failing in NBA (Jackevickus or Navarro for example), and it is probably a bad feeling going from one of the best, to a player that isn't a top 100 player in the league.
