I've not seen any data but from memory it always seems to go wrong.

Unless he's an absolute specialist I don't see the point either. Someone who's been through at least 20 mins of play will have already gotten used to the pressure. Mistakes can be costly at any time. Someone just on is always bound to be more nervous.
We did it last year with Mata and Telles and they both scored... But then they're both really excellent at pens, well Mata is anyway. Telles took them for his last club I think?

That's just selective memory. We brought on 4 players in the final 5 minutes last year and they all scored. This game too, 4 out of 5 takers that got subbed on in extra time scored. We only focus on the ones that miss.

As a neutral I enjoyed that. The whole vibe throughout was proper old school with fans in close proximity from the pitch and all that stuff. Frankfurt just about deserve it in the end, they should have had a penalty in normal time, had more clear cut chances and Rangers were lucky with their goal. I feel for Bassey, though, what a game he had.

On an unrelated note, I swear the quality of penalty shootouts in recent times have increased massively.
Not on that night.

Probably spot on. The misses in shootouts are just always so much more memorable.

Every pot two side dreaming already. They deserve this title though. Better team on the night overall and some great wins to get to the final. Great run for Rangers too but lacking in a bit of quality ultimately.
They also had an insane Europa league campaign a few seasons ago when they lost on pens to Chelsea in the semis where they could’ve also won that game. They beat Inter, Lazio, Shakhtar, Marseille, and Benfica on the way and then didn’t lose against Chelsea over 180 mins but lost on pens. So they might’ve over achieves this year on the back of their belief from that season as well.

They were the biggest losers tonight. For all the noise before the game started, and for somehow having more fans in the stadium by a good margin, they caught stage fright! The players would most likely have conjured up more during normal time had they were in their Ibrox best.

Thought Bassey had a brilliant game and was my man of the match. Think Steven Davis had a good performance too and Rangers got a bit more control of the game when they came on. Feel Rangers were the better team in extra time and had chances to win it. I know Roofe just came back from injury but he did well in his cameo and maybe should have got more minutes.

As for Frankfurt Lindstram(?) looked a great player and the columbian striker who got the goal! On another day they would have been given a penalty for the Goldson challenge. And the Japanese fella had a great chance to win the game with the lob which just went over.

Neither team deserved to lose in penalties but that’s football. Think bringing Ramsey on for a penalty was a risqué choice which didn’t pay off, but then again it did pay off with Roofe. On the whole I think GVB set the team up well though and wouldn’t blame him for the Ramsey sub.

Unlucky Rangers and Congrats Frankfurt. Enjoyable match for the neutral!

I've thought he's fantastic for a while now. Incredible physique which makes him a nightmare to get past.

Doubt it'll happen any time soon but a top end PL side should take a punt on him. I think they could make him into a really top player.

The quality of those penalties, apart from the missed one, was top drawer. There definitely feels that there have been a few shootouts recently where the standard has been unusually high.

They are also the only German team that regularly beats Bayern in important games. Don't see why they shouldn't do that to orher big clubs in the CL too.

I don't know if it's really even that shitty. It's got its positives and its negatives but there's far shittier cities in Germany.

But yeah, both fanbases are known for causing trouble.
Poor Sevilla. :(
I worked there for a few years and I have travelled the world extensively. Frankfurt is a complete and total dive only on a par with like Ballyfermot or somewhere. Horrific place.

Delighted they won though!!!

I don't particularly like Rangers but I was OK with them having a good run in Europe for the benefit of Scottish football. That being said, thankfully they didn't.
I'll be at the final on Saturday where they hopefully complete the losing in a cup final double.

Great summary of the game and I agree Rangers had the edge during extra time. Then again, I thought that penalty incident was a stonewaller and if I were a Frankfurt fan and they ended up losing, I'd be absolutely fuming.

Frankfurt ones, bar their first one which could have been easily saved had McGregor guessed the right way, were unstoppable. Ramsey's didn't place his central enough, but then again I knew he was going to miss just by looking at his face during the run-up.

Does anyone know why Rangers fan's drape the Union Jack instead of the flag of Scotland? But when England play its St George's flags everywhere?
they are unionists. They don't consider themselves Scottish, but British. In fact, a lot of them think of themselves as English.

Here's a taste of the mentalists in their ranks. Do pay particular attention to how much money the queen brings in, and what its like living in Ireland.

They'll be exhausted physically and mentally. Hearts have a great chance.

Lovely touch. I know one diehard Frankfurt fan, over the moon tonight. Europa League is fun when such teams manage to taste the glory
I never understood the Hate for it, it’s been a brilliant competition and the knock out games are always fantastic. Not easy to win either. As some have stated it has a very old school European football too it.

As much more lore as the CL has, due to oil money and the huge gap in revenue between clubs it’s kind of boring. You can guess the final 4 teams pretty easily for the most part every season.

Europa League has been aces in my view.

Yeah, it seems to have gotten a bit better the last few years.

I think I'd go the other way with the Conference league and just make it a March Madness (American college basketball) style tournament of 32 or 64 teams played over a shorter period of time, one game knockout style. A nice bracket for betting with seeding.

Dig up stupid!
For 20 mins or so rangers looked a level below, Frankfurt were full of confidence and looked like they'd win at a canter.

Rangers eventually got a foothold in the game though and whilst perhaps not showing the quality of Frankfurt started playing quicker and direct and started to impose themselves. After that it was an even game. Frankfurt shoudve had a pen but rangers had a huge chance in the last minutes and should've won it with that.

Lymstrom (sp) & hamada looked good for them. Bassey and Aribo good for rangers.

Pretty even game really, rangers acquitted themselves well, Frankfurt showing flashes of quality

Ramseys pen was really poor

I couldn't agree more. It's the edgier, more hipster cousin of the Champions League and I love it -- been a fan since we won in five years ago. And instead of soulless clubs swinging their dicks at each other to see whose is bigger you have plenty of heritage clubs, who have massive followings regardless, battling it out in a more honest fashion. Last night is a great example of this.

Bolded would be great fun. Club football needs something like this.

Need to remember it was after midnight by the time the game finished, & many fans had
flights to get to, or taxis and transfers to other resorts like Malaga & Albufeira over 2 hours away. In fact there's lots of reports coming of guys missing these and being stranded.

Also, lots of reports of not being able to get water or food at the stadium. So they've basically had to stand for 3 to 4 hours in 30 degree heat, there were big queues to drink water out the sinks in the toilet.
