It probably will be if as the models suggest that there is only a 4% downforce loss when within 0.3 seconds of the car infront, unlike the 35% that happens currently.

RB seem to be throwing alot of resources into this seasons championship. Win the constructors and their wind tunnel time will be the lowest on the grid next season. Be interesting to see if next years RB is compromised by RB going all out this season.
Purely conjecture, but I suspect they are investing in development "off the books". So won't be compromised next season.

Red Bull will be fine next year, don’t sleep on Newey building a monster with his ground effect experience from years gone by. They can probably afford to lose some wind tunnel time to win this year, the man is a genius.

It's genuinely great seeing 0.1s between Mclaren, Mercedes and Ferrari though. If that carries through to qualy.

Obviously Max being 0.7s ahead is a bit more daunting.

Took the very words out of my fingers.
Stunning pace. What more can he do to get that Mercedes drive.
Was worried his time would get deleted with that much improvement thought he'd gone over track limits.
It was a fantastic time in that car, I agree what more can he do, so want to see him in that Mercedes!

Could something like McLaren sign him or is he only allowed to go to Mercedes? Thought we were supposed to have more of an update this weekend anyway

The crowd cheering him there!

Don’t care what they say, that’s pole for me, stick your sprint race.

Delighted for Lewis, looks like game on!

Russell shoving it to his doubters  this guy is going to be world class, if not already is. Insane over 1 lap pace.

Nice to see Danny Ric a bit closer to Lando this week, that'll do him a world of good.

Get in Lewis, that was totally unexpected.
Fantastic lap to get pole.
So the upgrades have worked.
The sprint race should be interesting now.
Never bin off Lewis.
It is very important that Mercedes upgrades bring them closer to the Red Bull. Because if not, the rest of the season could become a procession.
Just listen to the amazing crowd. Such a brilliant atmosphere.

Fantastic reliability from these cars and in particular the power units.

If Lewis had not done a bit of a power slide round the last corners, he would have been even faster,
Yeah, he lost 0.3 with that slide. He was totally on the rails, I do still think that Red Bull had a poor set up, which makes me worry this may be a 1 off.

I think the track came to Merc and went away from Red Bull, Max barely improved from Q1.

You guys do realise that not all of these can be true simultaneously: Lewis is amazing, Bottas sucks and Lewis is less than 0.2s quicker.

That’s a pretty simplistic way of looking at it

I like the teams only having on fp1. Clearly RB havent dialled the car in to their liking. If not had been the usual weekend, fp2 and fp3 would have given them time to nail the setup. However F1 needs the battle to be really close to keep the season interesting.

Does this qualify as a normal pole for lewis and add to his record or is a there a new column in the records now for sprint qualifying?

Hamilton is not credited with an eighth Silverstone pole - with that honour awarded for the winner of Saturday's Sprint

I think it was @pauldyson1uk who posted on an earlier page that whoever leaves from pole on Sunday gets to have official pole position. That's how they've defined that now historically.

I didn't realise that it's a proper qualifier run as a race so the positions after tomorrow's sprint follow through into Sunday. If somebody has a wing knocked off and has to pit they will start in last place.
