First one that came to mind - great tracking shot isn't it?

Also Rear Window, no dialogue but the roaming camera picking out little details that tell you so much, so efficiently about the characters. Masterful.

The Fellowship of the Ring. Just absolutley mind blowing and still to this day gives me chills watching it.

And The Phantom of the Opera. (Joel Schumachers version). As an Phantom obsessed person the opening scene nailed it and was everything it should have been.

I actually thought The Dark Knight Rises had a better opening scene than The Dark Knight.

Love this. Looking forward to the remake.
It's such a flawed but also great film, one of my favorites. And this intro always sets the mood when I rewatch it.

Let's hope the remake is decent. Villeneuve is a good director so there's hope.

World War Z had a scarily good opener when they were stuck in that traffic.
Dunkirk's opener was better than the rest of it. Mind you same could be said for Saving Private Ryan. They shot their wads early there.

My favorite is Saving Private Ryan but honorable mentions:
  • Hard Boiled (1992)
  • At Close Range (1986)
  • Breakdown (1997)
  • Belly (1998)
  • The Pelican Brief (1993)

I like random long single take openings like Touch of Evil.... but it’s already got a mention, so I’ll add The Player to the discussion.

Or maybe, a not so great film but brilliant opening shot - Snake Eyes

Yeah, I am a big fan of the book. The whole weirding module shite ruins the film for me and the fact the fremen keep narrating the prophecy.

If Villeneuve makes it rain I will put my foot through the TV and send Sean Young the bill.

I don't particularly have a favorite opening scene. I'm a movie addict and every opening scene drums up a fair bit of excitement.
This is my favorite movie scene ever. It was insane watching this at a theater. Everyone went crazy. I'm talking spilled popcorn and slushies crazy.

Can’t forget Saving Private Ryan the Omaha Beach scene..
Many combat veterans say that is the most realistic combat scene ever filmed.

Some Normandy vets had their long since dormant PTSD triggered & had to leave the theater as it was so real to them.

The Matrix.

Watched it recently for the time in years. Remember being blown away by the opening the first time I saw it in 1999.
Still quite impressive.

The opening scene of 'Drive' is great. Perfectly sets up the protagonist and the atmosphere of the movie. It's intense and suspenseful without being over the top, and the music is awesome. Love that movie!
