Surprising but just proves that you can’t judge a players quality by stats alone.

Stats like these mean very little. Their overall contribution to the team isn’t good enough. After all, they do play for Manchester United - even though we’ve been shite recently our players will always have not-awful stats unless they’re pure dogshit.

Plus, Lindelof and Bailly are up there for a lot of those stats too, and I feel certainly Lindelof just offers a lot more overall. Composure, quality, decision making, consistency - things that Jones and arguably Smalling lack and you’ve not factored in here. Plus, Jones is made of glass.

Ferdinand and Vidic were so good that we basically left them at half-way line with the whole team (full-backs included) pushing for a winner late on in games. No worries as the ball was coming back to the mix all the time and the opposite team could hardly counter. Would you feel the same with our current CBs?

That won't be included in the stats.

Wan-Bissaka tackling stat: 91.62% Does this stat mean very little? Or does it show that Wan-Bissaka is very strong at tackling?

Only stats that count: Goals conceded, games lost, games won, trophies won.

It backs up the fact he’s good at tackling, yes, but the reason why he’s so good in that area is also down to his reactions, his speed, his timing. I’m sure you’ll have some mediocre premier league defenders with 80%+ tackling stats too, but there’s more besides the stat.

I’m not saying stats are useless, they’re good indicators, but we can see and feel how good a player is by watching the team. Jones and Smalling aren’t the worst players but we need to do better to progress.

Jones' stats are always misleading because he plays so little football and it's mostly during the easiest runs in the league against worst teams.

Jones and Smalling are not good enough, the fact they're about to complete 10 seasons each at his club sums up why we've been so shit for past 6 years. They epitomize everything wrong with us a club.

It's amazing how ignorant a lot of people are regarding statistics. No they don't provide the full picture. They do provide a lot of insight, especially for those who can't watch every single game, or just don't know how to watch the game while paying attention to every detail they say statistics misses

P.S. Ferdinand and Vidic >> Jones and Smalling

Does anyone have the stats for how many own goals scored while trying to clear the ball with the wrong foot?

It could mean he's great at tackling. It could mean he's poor at reading the game and often has to resort to lunging in. Impossible to tell which from stats alone.

Yeah, agreed. Also, this a weird thread to belittle stats when they confirm the bleeding obvious. Vidic and Rio (and Van Dijk) were/are at a completely different level to any CB at United. Something born out by another stat. Our shit defensive record since Rio/Vidic retired, despite generally playing risk averse, defensive football.

The discussion is that the game is to be watched, not read.

No. It can be watched and read.
It CAN be watched, read, listened to and imagined. But it is a game designed to entertain, you tell a good player by watching football. The Opta nerds should go to university and write an exam on it.

You don't have to show stats to know which are the way better duos.

Pretty sure Mata has around 85% pass completion over the season, does that make him one of the best AM in the league?
