Just started playing FIFA 23. Played the first few matches in career mode as United on legendary and started with 2 1-0 wins and 2 1-1 draws. It feels really frustrating to play though - players seem really sluggish and love under-hitting passes. Are there any suggestions of settings to try and get an enjoyable yet challenging career mode?

It is amusing how easy it is to sort out the United team on FIFA though. Osimhen upfront, Bellingham midfield and Chiesa as additional cover on the wing (Antony got injured for 7 months) and my squad looks pretty strong.

That's a really really helpful explanation. Thank you! I am using 3 in the middle - 433 with two CMs and a CAM. One is Schweinsteiger and so far partnered with PTG Palhina. Palhina is great but want to switch things up and Zanetti looks like an altogether different beast. That and the fact I can move him to wingback appeals.

I just did the Pogba SBC and he's got that lankiness that everyone raves about w Vieira so might not need to double dip w that profile of player and go w Zanetti

Happy to help! Agreed re: Pogba being more or less an ideal partner for someone like Zanetti - I'm eyeing that SBC too but getting him into the side would probably be tricky for me chemistry-wise.

Did Pogba and he's so good as a B2B in a 3-man midfield. Playing him, Payet and Makelele and they compliment each other well. Glad I switched my formation to 4-3-3 (2) as it has helped Best perform better as a RW compared to RM.

Nope it's just not good. Only a viable game if you're obsessed with FUT basically.

Whoever added that “zoom in” shot is not on my Xmas card list though - conceded a 90th minute winner to City when one of their players did that, I lost orientation and then the ball broke to a suddenly unmarked Haaland to fire home in the box.

Turn it off. It's in camera settings under zoom shot or something like that.

It's not bad at all. Still to this day I don't get the FUT hype and think it's stupid that the game needs sliders to be playable, but here we are. Since PES pretty much gave up it's the only option.

He's good. I've been using him instead of WC Icon Schweinsteiger who has been a mainstay in my team. Even though Xabi beats Schweiny on just about every stat, I'm not feeling the impact in the same way. Then again, I've also managed to move from Div 8 to 5 since then so I'm struggling in general now whereas I used to be able to just enjoy the game. Might put Schweinsteiger back in and see how much of my issue is the opposition.

On a side note, Pogba SBC is brilliant. I also tried Pirlos toty icon on loan and he was also fantastic. Both much more mobile than Xabi

Can't justify POTM Mbappe because of the minimal upgrade over his gold but honestly Mbappe might actually stay in my team till TOTS he's that good.

Have any of you done the Rooney SBC? I wasn't sure initially but I stuck with him, tried him with Engine, Architect and Hunter (settled on Architect) and I'm absolutely loving this card. Possibly my favourite striker I've used in fifa, his shooting is phenominal. Think he's got about 60 goals and 20 assists in 40 games for me. Last night I played an hour and won all of my 8 rivals games for the week within an hour, going from div 4 to the verge of div 2. Rooney couldn't stop scoring.

Thankfully this card is seriously slept on I think. If you figure out how to use him then he's insanely good. One other player gave me a tough game with him last night, think he had an Engine on him which makes a noticeable difference in dribbling, but he's too good with Architect. Fast, 99 strength around 94/95 aggression...nobody takes the ball off him. He's scoring headers for fun too which has surprised me, as I never score headers.

I like the design of the POTM card too but the price is just too steep for me. This account iv'e started last month has packed Mbappe, Neymar and Messi along with 1 icon and 3 heroes. Honestly not seen anything like it.

If I buy a player who has been given a certain chemistry style, am I stuck with that or can I change it once I've bought them?

To be fair I think the icon SBCs are some of the best. Yes, there's always a risk of mediocre pulls but in general icons all play better than their stats and for any true football fan it's nice to have em in the club for "free" off fodder.

You can change it. You'll soon find a ton of chemistry cards in your inventory or you can buy them off the market - don't. Save your coins.

It's a brilliant and fun concept. But monetized to hell and incentives the absolute worst in people for that reason.

If you're ever thinking about buying FIFA points you should stop, smack yourself in the willy or the titty or both or neither or whatever and turn the game off.

If you're hell bent on spending money look for the special promo packs with guaranteed players over a certain rating.

Oh absolutely yeah - I refuse to spend any money on it. Definitely won't be doing that. It's definitely addictive - but the fact I barely have any time to play it should keep me from going off the rails with it!

My weekly routine is - get 3 - 8 wins in rivals which gets you a decent number free packs. Do a handful of squad battles (against cpu) to get the weekly objectives. Silver games as well for the silver star objective. Since you're starting out you'll likely get tons of rewards from objectives too and soon see the loot box psychology these guys hurl at you from every angle. Save cards when you can to put them into the Squad building challenges which I think is my favorite addition and probably the most rewarding.

Also recommend trying the Draft mode - start offline as online is all people who are way too good for me.

Yeah I had trouble with that draft mode you know - the game kept crashing during the first game. The first time, EA restored my lost token, but the 2nd and 3rd time they refused! So been put off that for now, even though it's a really good concept.

I'm in Div 1 of seasons and feel like i'm missing a trick regarding pace/sprint, multiple times i've been outsprinted by a player whilst controlling Hakimi, Kimpembe etc despite the player not being as quick as them, or multiple times when 1 on 1 defending a through ball, I go to shoulder barge the striker with a Kimpembe and the striker just holds him off and sprints away. I know wiggle stick sprinting is much faster when with the ball but very rarely do I seem to be able to get away from opposition defenders yet struggle to keep up with their attackers. I also have absolutely no idea how to score from a corner or defend a corner which is annoying.

Yeah with the corners its more that I don't know how to time headers/jump when defending or attacking, tbh I don't know how to win headers anywhere on the pitch, its the one weakness in my game. I don't know if I have to hold shoot down, tap, time the header just before the ball, when it arrives. it's one of Fifa's great mysteries for me.
