Never mind refugees, we are doomed as a species with feckwits like this in charge of anything.

What an incredibly daft statement. Stripping Italy off their Euros title is the only fitting punishment.

Perhaps if they can organize the World Cup every year, they will also solve the climate crisis..

Infantino makes Blatter and Platini look like saints. What an idiot he is proving to be.

On the flipside a World Cup every year would greatly increase the odds for being able to choose the right national team to play for us IF a sudden losing-species-will-be-enslaved football game between an alien civilization and us humans was announced. So the man isn't completely wrong with his suggestion, he's just not providing the best arguments.

But there's nothing to stop this, right? As long as national federations in the FIFA congress give it a majority vote it's through, right?

I thought this might have been one of those taken out of context quotes that doesn't sound nearly as bad when you read or listen to the full speech. So I listened to the speech. Nope, still terrible and disrespectful.

As an African, I consider his statement an insult. He didn't have anything reasonable to say so just threw how poor Africa is for good measure. A cnut.

Lets try and be as objective as possible. Who does this affect positively and negatively

Positive:

FIFA- a lot more money
Football associations of countries with a poor league- a lot more money
Some fans- more football
Football associations that value winning the world cup above everything else- more chances to win the trophy
Media- more shit to talk about and more money
Corrupt football associations- more money

Negative:

Uefa and Conmebol- impacts the euros and copa, important money makers

Players- more unpaid labor, more risk of injury and burnout, less time off
Some fans- lower quality of football, a more messed up football calendar
Club football- more breaks and sending players abroad, more injuries etc
Football associations with strong leagues- negative financial impact, affects their product

I'm probably missing a few in both categories but overall it's definitely a decision made for money and without the players in mind. That alone makes me against the idea completely.
Just a comment to the bolded part:
There are already plans of CONMEBOL teams joining the UEFA Nations League from 2024.
So teams from CONMEBOL and UEFA would pretty much meet every year if there's a Nations League in between the World Cups taking place every two years.

There have to be a point of oversaturation surely.
I think the plans for the extended Club World Cup (with 24 teams, min 2 games for all, 5 games total for finalists) is still in play too.

Conmebol won't care one bit. They're all about lining their pockets with all the money they can siphon from the sport. This is just more money for them.
The only reason UEFA is opposed to it is that they don't want more competition from tournaments fighting in the same tv rights market as their tournaments (Especially the UCL). Uefa is planning to market the UCL better and get at least 50% income increase from the new format. If there are more tournaments on the tv market, that might hurt the UCL sales in America and Asia.

Conmebol actually were among the instigators of this project and they only changed their mind when UEFA offered to invite teams from CONMEBOL to a new richer Nations league.

But the issue is much more complicated. Asia has 4.5 billion inhabitants and less than 6 % of them will see their countries qualify for the 2022 WC. And the local championships are nowhere near as popular as international football. Meanwhile, people in Europe's big 5 have popular league games with superstars every week.

I think we might end up with the UEFA + CONMEBOL doing a Nations league taht looks like a mini-WC and some sort of intercontinental competition gathering Asia, Africa, and North America.

A survey by world players' union Fifpro and national player unions has found that 75% of male players want the World Cup to remain played every four years.

According to the survey, 77% of players in both Europe and Asia supported keeping the current schedule, dropping to 63% in the Americas and 49% among African players.

Would be interesting to see a breakdown of those stats - If players in nations that are unlikely to get to World Cups want more or if players who are in regular World Cups want more.
