Florian Wirtz | Der Fußballgott

Is anyone? Seems like most agree he was decent, they just don't think he was notably brilliant.
As United fans, given how our players are crucified for their price tags, we won’t let the most expensive midfielder in history off the hook because he was decent against feckin West Ham.

As others have said, he needs to put Ballon d’Or performances to justify what they paid for him. Chiesa has had more impact than him

He played quite well. He was not incredible or excellent or outstanding. But it was a lovely little performance and we got worse the moment he went off.

Besides the chances he created it was all the small stuff. Tidy little layoffs, a pass weighted to run on to instead to feet to create an opening, good movement. Just very intelligent stuff that confident technical players would make the most of playing around him, the same way Mane/Salah used to when playing off Firmino.
Wasted on this lot with the form they are in though.

You can see why he was brought in though. Potential there for a "bring the team to the next level" kind of player.

All very far from where we are today. Both for the team and Wirtz. But if he keeps playing like this he'll be grand.

Maybe if he actually played a game like the 180m player he's supposed to be, we won't be having this discussion.
I get that he cost 200 million, so people expect more. But that doesn't mean he suddenly cost more than 210 million.

Absolutely. Incredibly underwhelming so far and one decent performance against a terrible West Ham doesn't change that

There's clearly a player there but still no goals or assists is hilarious with the money spent.

Wah wah wah. You crucify your own players and the media feeds into it and now you're upset the same doesn't happen to teams where the fans don't do that and are trying to make it happen.

A 5/10 performance yet probably his best so far in the PL

It's 12 PL games. 0 goals 0 assists. All for £115m

At one stage I was quite far back from the TV and could have sworn I was watching prime Zico!

Wirtz played really well I thought for the 300 million we paid. One of the best performances by us besides Sobo all season. Big decisions coming up for Slot in regards to lineups though.

I think that this is only papering over the cracks. More upper body strength would have helped him a lot for us as well. It's simply the next step in his development. He's able to play much better than he did so far with his current build. I just hope he doesn't put on so much weight that it affects his agility too much. Not completely convinced it's a decision to go down that route.

The problem is rather that you don't create space so your players find themselves regularly in situations in which they have to fight for the ball. Your positional play is extremely static.
You conveniently ignore how he had problems in Leverkusen as well in games with the highest intensity, e.g. the final vs Atalanta or against Bayern in the CL.

PS: I think he played well today.

Very good performance. He's already playing better than Veron ever did and Wirtz cost considerably less. Might look a bargain by the end of the season year month. Cheeky ballon d'or 2026 bet?

I thought he was decent-ish. Calling it a good performance was a stretch though. Sobo still Liverpool best player by a mile. Ive seen similar performances by the likes of Kagawa for United

That's not really fair, is it? Until the UCL match up, we hadn't lost 5 matches in a row against you and Wirtz was consistently good to great in those games, the only exception being our somewhat lucky cup win earlier that year. Wirtz also excelled against other teams that pressed the hell out of us, like Stuttgart and Leipzig. And in the two UCL matches, he was injured/just came back from a serious injury.

That aside, my argument the whole time has been that attackers rely on their teams creating situations for them and top teams usually take care of this by establishing match control. Wirtz is no exception to this but you will find few attacking players that contribute as much in the build up as he did for us, averaging ~90 touches per match. Even in this match, he was only at 50. People have been targeting him over his lack of goal contributions but I think it is much more concerning how uninvolved he is. Today was a step in the right direction since he was well integrated in the build up, playing lots of good one twos and doing his part in beating the press but he's still far away from the influence he had for us.

Mate, Bayern was on an 11 championship in a row streak. There were even some Bayern fans that were low-key hoping for another Bundesliga Champion as they believed it would help sharpen the team.

You will hardly find any Bundesliga games in which Bayern will play with the same intensity compared to a Champions league game when it really counts.

Stuttgart and Leipzig are no match for that. And again, the Atalanta game was similar...

Saw his reel v West Ham and he looked rather Phil Foden-esque (current version not the PL POTY) but with more creative potential. I do think Wirtz will come through because he's a modest, unpretentious, boiled potatoes type of lad who buckles down, and sticks at it until it works. Apparently he's gained 2.5 kg of muscle, as long as he does the necessary adjustments there's no reason why he can't come good like Caicedo.

Wow the bdl are out in force trying to make us believe he is world class again after a performance which is at best decent. I remember how souness wanted more from pogba in a match in which he gave 4 assists. Not a peep from the media about his performance till now. 0 goals and assists for £160m is astonishing.

It is just so tough and unfair.

Yeah, play a few 5 yard passes vs. relegation fodder. Guess £180m was about right.

You were on course for a 90 points season when we beat you 3:0. Only after that, the infights started and the performances detoriated. Up until then, you were much better than the previous season. The season after, you were a motivated as hell after finishing a season titleless for the first time since probably 2012. It still took you four games to register the first win against us and that was the first one Wirtz was missing if I'm not mistaken.

I also don't get why Atalanta counts in your opinion but Leipzig and Stuttgart don't. We were a shadow of ourselves in that final collectively. They weren't better than Stuttgart that season.

And also from a logical perspective, Wirtz is a player for tight spaces, it doesn't make much sense that teams that press him should be his weakness?

We United fans have been forces to suffer so much stupidity from pundits and other fans constantly referencing certain players’ price tags, of course we’re gonna think we have the right to be stupid this time around!

Isn’t it more the usual two Leverkusen fans?
