Neuer was the most prolific keeper on the market for years and United was heavily interested. Lewandowski was chased by Real.
Neuer is a very similar case, because it was obvious at the time, that we agreed a deal with him long before the contract ran out. Like with Wirtz. Nobody else had a chance from that moment onwards.
And that market value argument gets made every time. Neuer is too valuable, you won’t get him like that. Lewandowski is too valuable, you won’t get him like that. Götze is too valuable…
All players had plenty of suitors, were immensely hyped and still ended up agreeing deals with us.
I think one factor might really be, that we tend to build and maintain relationships with players, that last for years before they join us. They know we want them not because they are performing right now, but because we believe in them and have plans for them. We’re just really good at giving them the feeling of being wanted, needed and able to grow with us.
I would prefer to move to a club like ours, who charmed me for years, than a club who got interested lately because I am on a great run. Feels more secure.
