Florian Wirtz | Liverpool Player

Doesn't this work both ways? 2 decades of United dominance surely led to an increase in the number of United fans/journalists?
There probably are, but they're just one club, compared to the fans of all the others who grew up disliking United. I mean I know Sheffield Wednesday fans who still try and rub it in whenever United lose, such is their dislike. Why?! Never had any kind of rivalry with them during that period.

What you do see though is a lot of ex-United players in the media adding fuel to the fire, which is probably what Liverpool fans had to put up with when Hansen and Lawrenson were two of the biggest pundits on TV, at the time.

Cheers. So the notion is that Liverpool need to carve out a proper role for him, rather than him having to fit into what they are currently doing?
Yes. He is the face of the last team that was able to knock us from our thrown. That alone has gotten him so much good will by German fans and pundits, he could take a shit in the middle of the field and the pundits would applaud his wiping technique.

Putting him on Salah's position might be their best bet, If they want to keep their usual structure.

He’s getting a rough time in the press but if you watch his movement and touches, he’s going to be ripping the PL apart soon. He could have had a stack of assists had the players around him finished them off.
I think he looks class, unfortunately.

Neh he’s getting a rough time by fans of other clubs with the press (e.g. the athletic) defending him.

I'm concerned about the time and space he'll likely be afforded against us in our next game and that we'll make him look good.

think right now they'd be better off changing structure. Chiesa has played wingback in the past and I'm sure would jump at the chance to play gk just to get on the pitch. Frimpong is best as a wingback, they can plug Gravenberch in the middle of a back 3. Or keep Kerkez tucked in and ask Wirtz/Isak/Ekitike/one of the midfielders to open up their positions towards the left wing in rotation. Or something. I think Wirtz + 3 forwards doesn't work

Isn’t it sacrilegious to play him wide?

At the national team, he plays out wide a lot, especially if they are on the pitch together with Musiala - switching positions, one drifting the other in the middle and vice versa.

But seriously, what's he done to piss off Slot so much? I saw an interview of Slot where he said Chiesa didn't play much last season because the team was playing too well for him to get in. What's his excuse now?

Liverpool scored double as much as united, but he is nowhere to be seen in these goals. But dont worry, he will turn into prime Ronaldinho against us in two weeks, I am certain of that.

He needs to dye his hair blonde, put on a fake beard and change his name to Frederik Kerk

I will keep my view on his start of the season to my self until we play them.
I get what you're saying, but age has really caught up with Salah this season and we all know he will still bag a hattrick against us in the next match.

What?!?

It's the complete opposite.

He is literally getting no pressure from the press and also looks like he can barely kick a ball

Good idea, we need to start talking him up to jinx him for the next game.

He's ace.

It's just bizarre. Especially as he's scored a few late goals already. In what universe is he not in better form than Salah at the moment?

But the press don't ask Slot about this or his supposed master plan that convinced Wirtz about the Liverpool move.

It’s gonna be interesting if he starts to not feature in the starting line-up more regularly. With two games a week, you can always point to rotation, but if he continues to be ineffective, Slot will have to think about just dropping him.

Quite lucky that his team picked up some lucky points this season. Otherwise the pressure would be high. Not as high as if he played for us though.

Narrative would be vastly different again if Salah just scored after his beautiful assist.

I would also again like to point out what people would say about Wirtz if he performed like Salah or Gakpo yesterday, absolutely shocking.

Anyway, I advise everyone to have their fun now because a lot of the posts in here will look very stupid in some time.

Yes, more dominant, more consistent
This is not true, KDB was dominating Bundelliga during both Bayern's and Dortmunds prime while also winning POTY averaging 7.95 match ratings. Wirtz on the other hand never went above 7.50 or 23 G/A vs KDB 30 G/A.

I doubt that.

Most posts are just saying how he's been crap up until now. He has.

We battered them a few times over the years. We famously stuck two past them after about 3 days was put on in added on time in 1993. We probably never think of them again, but we've hurt them many times over the years. Like everyone else. They hate United. We ruined their childhood.

Time will tell, I guess. Zero doubt in my mind he will succeed.
The posts are saying he’s been crap, which he objectively has. They aren’t going to look stupid if he suddenly starts performing, that’s mindnumbingly stupid logic.

This is what I think. Start him there and give him a free role, have Frimpong provide the width down that flank. The only issue is that one of the midfielders will have to cover for Wirtz when they don't have the ball.

Basically similar to what we did with Ronaldo. Fletcher did the dirty work for him and Brown/Neville provided the width down the flank.

Because I have eyes.
No, because you’re a leverkusen fan who wants Wirtz to do well. Nothing wrong with that, but we aren’t talking a small sample size anymore for his Liverpool career. It’s 9 games across the league and champions league, and his biggest contribution so far is forcing some statistician to look up the premier leagues all time goal contributors based on not contributing after their first seven games.

There are more United fans/journalists as well, but unless 50% of journalists are United fans, the result is more ABU stuff overall.

Like @Crimson King said, fans of a certain age from Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, Bolton, Blackburn, and Newcastle...probably a few others... have a weird one-sided hatred of United. Add that to Leeds, City, and Liverpool fans and the media consists of a majority who can’t stand us.

Combine that with the fact that anything about United gets more clicks/ ad money than any other club, and it’s hardly a shock we get so much negative coverage.

Im not claiming he has played amazingly, but he hasnt been nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Doesnt help him that the team is obviously struggling in general and all other forward players, maybe par Ekitike, are massively out of form. There are of course moments where he could or should have done better but there also have been really good moments that show his obvious quality, which are always ignored when people talk to criticise him.
I want him do to well, but I also firmly believe he will be doing well. There has been the age-old discussion in the last few pages about Bundesliga players and their integration into the PL again and my take on it is that, having watched him for 5 1/2 years on a weekly basis, while also having watched guys liks Szoboszlai, Joelinton, Ekitike, Sesko, Xavi Simons, Marmoush, Havertz, Woltemade etc. routinely, he is head and shoulders above anyone on that list and almost all Bundesliga players who have gone to the PL in the last 10-15 years, based on their Bundesliga performances. And I dont think my view on that is extremely biased, but rather a concensous in Germany where the league is followed intensively. Thats why I have no doubts that he will eventually succeed in England as well. Guys who are not nearly as good as him have done so.

BDL here just in time. Someone was about to say something bad about Wirtz

This is such a redundant argument because you're assuming that all players adapt the same based on quality.

Hint: they do not. Soldado was the top scorer of La Liga and was awful in the PL, but someone who performed far worse in La Liga like Negredo did much better.

Styles matter. I don't know why this is hard to understand.

Story of Pogbas time at United.

The media need to hound Slot and Liverpool just like they do with us every single week and even more so when we had players like Pogba in the team. But of course they won’t as he’s English footballs new darling.

Tbf there’s a sort of ‘these foreign pansies can’t hack it in the superior PL’ undertone in a lot of these criticisms. People have a hard time just confining the discussion to stylistic adaptation. One of the greatest players in the PL era couldn’t hack it in 90s Serie A, for instance, and during that same timeframe one of the best midfielders in Serie A couldn’t make it work at United, shit happens.
