Maybe, my worry is who can we get that offers similar quality on the ball to De Jong. If we had City/Chelsea like investment then it would be possible so need to find a cheaper alternative.

I don't think that's an accurate read on this. I think it's all financial. He wanted more than they had.

This guy knows ETH well. I don't see the team chasing him like this if it was a hard no. He's just toeing the party line and waiting for the financial side to align. If it doesn't then he can act like it was all United, they were so desperate to have me blah blah.

And I think this is tied in to the minority shares being sold, as well as the pressure by Ronaldo to leave which probably was what caused it all. We should thank Ronaldo tbh.
