What I'm on about is we've been in the exact place summer after summer over the last decade and that our other signings are being held up until this one gets done -- or doesn't get done. Unless we have reason to believe that De Jong is a sure thing. But on what basis can we be sure it is a sure thing? We're fecking around over by saving what, 5m?
Who says they’re being held up over this and they don’t have their own snags? If they paid the five million you’d then be frothing at the mouth that the club can’t negotiate.

It’s such a stupid mindset.

The fact we appear to be solely focussed on this transfer before doing any other business and don't seem to have any alternative targets doesn't exactly help pur negotiating position for fdj

We should want to convince them we can walk away if they don't accept a reasonable offer but uts so clear we don't have any intention of doing that

Seems like FDJ is the center piece for Ten Hag's tactic so it is probably a bad idea to use FDJ as an example Man Utd will walk and not over pay for player.

It’s all a merry go round.

Liverpool needed to sign Nunez to replace Mane.

Mane signing for Bayern allows them to sell Lewandowski.

Barca selling FdJ allows them to sign Lewandowski.

This transfer will happen, it just takes time for both parties to agree the transfer fee. Barcelona also needs the money to bring in Raphinha as Dembele replacement.

If the club really have bid more than £60m I think they should walk away if the bod isn't accepted.

I want players as much as the next fan but there are other fish in the sea and Ten Hag needs to show he's capable of moulding another player too. Not just a player he's managed before.

Who? What is the name of the player on the market that would be competitve in a couple of weeks/months? Do you really thing that United can accept another year with a goal difference of 0?

Nothing personal against you, absolutely no offence intended at all but I’m so sick of posts like this.

Fans need to understand this isn’t a ‘other fish in the sea’ scenario. There are many other CM/DM players but not too many like FDJ. He has unique qualities that will transform our team.
It’s not simply about a player ETH is familiar with - he is the kingpin that the manager wants to shape his team around. It’s worth thrashing this one out, however long it takes.

I take you point about ETH moulding players, but this player and position isn’t the time for that. He is vital to our plan going forward

It's also not true because by all accounts we've made a contract offer to Eriksen as well.

I understand that people want to see a signing but some of the nonsensical whining from our fans is extremely fecking grating.

Literally 90% of chat on transfers isn't based on any solid evidence but when was the last time we signed anyone without rumours weeks in advance. There is also the fact that smoke and mirrors is a common part of negotiation

The worst part of this whole deal is that the man doesnt even want to come...
Wrong. He wasn't eager to leave Barcelona, nothing to do with United.

But he has no choice because the club is kicking him out. And under those circumstances it's an amazing opportunity to play for the great Manchester United and help them back to days of glory with his beloved Ajax manager where they did the same.

What else did he say when you spoke to him mate?
Well he did say this...

“I understand that that link is made. That sum is not that difficult, it is logical. I have enjoyed working with Ten Hag at Ajax – and I can’t look into the future, of course. But I prefer to stay at Barcelona. That has always been my dream club and it still is. As long as I don’t hear from the club management, I assume nothing is going on.”

Doesn't mean he won't perform if he's transfered to United though.

With other positions I'd agree. But this is a specialised midfielder we are talking about who will be the fulcrum of the team's style of play, someone educated in a particular footballing philosophy from his youth. Finding a similar alternative is pretty difficult. Whereas RW, RB, LB, even CB is a different matter. Paying an extra 10m (if reports are accurate, which is a huge if) is not that bad, considering what we're solving by recruiting him.

I think the deal will be done soon.

He is currently on £354,000 a week, lives in a city with very nice weather and food, and with CL football next season. Of course he doesn't want to leave unless the club kicks him out.

Barcelona, Celta de Vigo
I don't think that they can.
As I understand it, its because of an imposed wage cap, so they cannot sign three new players because that will take them over the wage cap, they have to reduce their annual wage sum first.
Which means that they are forced to sell before they sign.

I stand to be corrected....
When Barcelona activates the economic levers, they will be able to sign normally and register the players.

The sale of FDJ will be to finance other signings.
The amount between fixed and variable will be €85M+ probably.

Name of a CM that makes us alot better?

Neves, Milinkovic- Savic, Barella.

Ones we should have signed in the last 12 months that were worth it - Tchouameni, Kessie, Camavinga and Guimaraes.

I probably missed the news that SMS or Barella were available. And good luck negociating with Lazio or Inter, Barella would be more expensive than De Jong and there's a reason why SMS is still at Lazio after all these years.

Doubt most of them would be much cheaper at all. Two of those players have gone to Real Madrid, so we'd have had no chance of signing them anyway, same with Kessie as he's joining Barcelona.

De Jong is the best available relative to price and availability, and more importantly the manager considers him a key player to achieve his targets.

So why don't the club just pay the asking fee and move on? They're not comfortable overpaying at the moment whether they're trying to improve the image of the club/ Genuinely not caring about the team or squad on the field. That I don't know.

But what I do know is they've sold so many players and released so many over the past 3 seasons that money or the wage bill can't be an issue this summer with so little first team players in the squad.

I'd sign Neves if Barca are going to take us to the cleaners that's all. Neves would be ours for around £50m.

If its the crucial signing it should have been done long ago. Club are leaving it late now for preseason.

It’s probably too hot for him most of the time, coming from Holland and with his colouring.

Forget about de Jong, at this rate I’m not even sure we would be able to negotiate with Everton to allow Van de beek to come back to us.

Think he knows the club wants to kick him out.
that's what i said this transfer will happen, and my guess is Man Utd will pay up in the end. FDJ is critical to Ten Hag's tactic and every one knows it.

Edit
I would add Eriksen too. Ten Hag probably needs more than one player with ajax school background to implement his football.

He spends 4k per week on various caps, umbrellas and cold drinks to go around this issue.

According to reports the asking price for Neves is 100m so Wolves can do one. It would take even longer and they may not budge. I'm not even sure I'd want him at United anyway.

We're not really leaving late with regard to FDJ and pre-season. The ones who didn't play Nations League games are back next week. The ones who did are getting at least an extra week if not two before they have to come back fo pre-season.

Nah. It's hardly been a week since he finished the International duty. He's on holiday. All the players who have been needlessly run into the ground in the Nations League have a longer break, understandably. But I expect it to be wrapped up soon. It's not looking like it did 3 weeks ago when we weren't sure if he would come. That seems to have been sorted. Now it's just about money.

Also, it seems we're not that well prepared, yet again. Unless we're super clandestine these days. So I doubt we have quality alternatives lined up. Eriksen is nowhere near similar and cannot in any way play the same role. Neves is both overpriced and a few levels of quality below, nor can he really do that role properly, not very mobile.

I'd still hope the club are moving nicely along with some targets we have no idea of but I'm not counting on it.

There is more than one aspect to a transfer negotiation though. The fee is one thing, but what if Barca (because of their financial situation) want the whole fee in one instalment up front? That’s not something we would be comfortable with I’m sure. This could be where the haggling is coming into play. Plus Barca need to get this sorted by the end of the month. Squeaky bum time I’m afraid.

Yeh if anything it seems to be the biggest sign that we're yet again not using our huge network of scouts. We are where we are. Hopefully they sign a few players before pre season gets going or it will be the same old excuses of new players not benefitting from a full preseason.

The only justification to a transfer dragging out is if the value of the player is purchased beneath the selling clubs expectations so if De Jong arrives for around 65 million euros total fee it's shrewd business.

Anything more and it's a strong sign that this new leadership is just as bad as the old guard. Between United and Barcelona someone's going to come out looking foolish.
