How are we going to offer him more than his current 350k /week salay? I think this is the problem. Barcelona want to cut on player salaries, he has 3 option, satying at Barcelona on current salay and facing rage from the board, or accepts salary cut, or join united with a bit lower salary but still good one.
Salary pay cut won't be enough to help Barcelona financially. He needs to be sold. What they want is both his salary and transfer fees and even that's still not be enough. If his salary pay cut alone is enough, they would have find different way to solve it.

How are we going to convince him to join united with a lower salary? we are not paying him anywhere near what Barca is paying him now, 350k per week is never going to happen.

Heavily-incentivised salary package dependent on success and performance ala the contracts the majority of the Liverpool players have been on in their 2018-2022 cycle.

That's about the same as Varane and Sancho but still less than DDG.

According to reports, his contract is for 16m euros as an annual gross. That's 307,692 euros weekly, which is £264,095 (and 2 pennies for the tuck shop). If you were to factor in wage cuts, it's really not a huge offer to beat.

Even the "350k never gonna happen" seems odd given what was on the table for Pogba.

Thanks mate, those names are more expected, although I'm a bit surprised Pogba is there as getting caught dawdling on the ball under the press happened quite often for us. Interesting that Kamara is on there, I still feel he could be one we regret not going for, like Bruno Guimarães. Have you seen any of MMikel Merino?
I don't think passes made under pressure as a metric on its own means much, just that said player has a lot of touches and makes plenty of passes for their team. But I don't think it means that the pass also gets completed, just the amount of attempted passes players get pressured on. For example Sergej Milinković-Savić and Mikel Merino like Pogba also have higher percentages than de Jong. I think it's best to look at that metric in conjunction with other stats, such as average passes made per game, pass completion, progressive passes, long ball passing efficiency and how often they get dispossessed. As you can imagine, Milinković-Savić, Mikel Merino and Pogba are all worse when it comes to being a reliable passer like de Jong and they also get dispossessed a lot more. I haven't really watched Merino all that much, looking at his statistical profile, he is player like Bruno, works hard, is creative, but also loses possession quite a bit.

260k will be more logical.

There are some reports that he is, but personally I doubt it.
Our top 5 earners currently are…..

Ronaldo is on £510k a week gross.
DDG is on £375k a week gross
Sancho is on £350k a week gross.
Varane is on £340k a week gross.
Martial is on £250k a week gross.

Some of those salaries are gross alright.

Is Sancho on that kind of money?
According to lot of websites, but those are probably already included as UCL qualified bonus. Pretty sure, I saw the report on the Twitter when we signed him that he was around 300k - 350k p/w after bonus.

I dont think the fees and wages would be a reason not to go for him. Most big clubs don't have that big of a need in midfield. Most have a playmaker or dont need one. Which is the second point, you need to really need tht type of player, as De Jong is a specific type of midfielder. Not every manager or club wants to change to accommodate him.

That said, i would be surprised if none of PSG or Bayern would try for him.
For that price and wage bracket, there are probably 8 other teams that could afford him. All of them have midfields that don't require major investment. Plus 3 of them are focused on trying to sign Pogba.
Yes huge wages that rules out some of the top clubs as well, Bayern, Juventus wouldn't pay such wages, Madrid don't do business with Barca, Pep can't have enough of this type of players but the wages would be an obstacle, Liverpool have Thiago, Psg have Verratti, that means Chelsea and United, but it will only make sense for Chelsea if Jorginho leaves as well.
We are the biggest club most in need. PSG are another but have so many...just not good enough.
  • City have Rodri, who isn't really compatible with FDJ (much like Busquets)
  • Madrid have already invested in their midfield with Camavinga and that move would be too spicy for a Barca fan like FDJ
  • Juve have signed Zakaria and Pogba
  • Bayern have Kimmich and Goretzka and have just signed Gravenberch for the bench
  • PSG could use him, but they're looking at Tchouameni
Maybe if Tchouameni falls through PSG will be in for him. His wages are an issue for all other teams (including Liverpool).
Because there's only a few clubs who could be.

I think Nagelsmann wants/wanted a Frenkie type at Bayern, but they don't tend to spend that kind of money and are already bringing in Gravenberch for 20m as someone they can form into that player instead.
I'm sure PSG wouldn't mind him, but he does overlap quite a bit with Veratti.
Juve could obviously use him considering their midfield but they're going after the free Pogba instead.

It just leaves premier league sides, of which Chelsea have too many players of his ilk already (with De Jong falling somewhere in the middle of Jorginho, Kovacic, Kante in terms of skillset)

It basically just leaves City, who are the only ones I can see coming in for him (I think he'd be great alongside Rodri, but it would require change of shape by Pep) but as a club it seems like they only go after a player when it fits exactly into some plan/place they have for him, rather than simply because the opportunity's there (Although maybe not so much with Grealish?)

But yeah you honestly have just one potential rival for his signature and that's a picky City.
In terms of other United rivals: he'd be a good replacement for Xhaka but why would he want to go to Arsenal right now? And why would he believe that Conte of all people would finally let him play his own game?

Edit: completely forgot Liverpool exists

would be an interesting player for Liverpool but only if for some reason they decided to move on from Thiago
Some have other priorities for what is still a large amount of money, other will as you say be put off by the wages.

But there's also the type of player to consider. As has already been pointed out in this thread and through his experience at Barca, De Jong is quite a specialist player who won't neccesarily function as well when used in a different role. And a lot of other teams aren't neccesarily geared to use him in the way that brings the best out of him. Whereas in our case we're in a position where we're essentially rebuilding the team from scratch again, so we can build the midfield around him to a certain extent.
Liverpool have Fabinho. City have Rodri. Bayern have Kimmich. Chelsea have Jorginho. Us and PSG were linked with him but if there is a choice to pick between ten Hag or PSG, we would be the frontrunner.
Cheers guys. It seems like most big clubs either don't really need him or can't afford him.

It sounds like City, PSG and we are the viable clubs. PSG in particular could move in for him if Touchameni ends up at Real Madrid (with Pogba going to Juventus)

Well that’s gonna pay for 5 minutes of a players contract. It’s like throwing a stick into the Grand Canyon hoping it’ll bridge it if you throw enough
There must be some reason they're doing all of this, surely?

I feel like a shady deal will save them and they'll point to this stuff and say "look that's where we got the money, promise!"

Bar Ronaldo, I doubt these numbers are true.
I imagine it's common knowledge to most, but our players' salaries are almost always reported with bonuses included, which isn't common practice elsewhere. Maybe that's where the disconnect is coming from?

I suppose they want to show their financial bank they are leaving no stone unturned but it’s all show. That probably pays the tea ladies.

what i dont get is why they continue buying players when they clearly can’t afford to? Why not just build around the young players for a few seasons and save some cash

Best thing about this thread is you can leave it for any given amount of time and the exact same things will be being said as where you left it.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

Honestly, I think they all sound about right (considering the wages we tend to spend) except for Sancho. Even with how badly we've been run and the stupid amount of money that Woodward and Judge gave out, giving a young player who has made it obvious that he wants to come back to England over £300k (especially during Covid) seems out of place. He was supposedly on £190k a week at Dortmund, so why would we almost double it? I would have thought he'd be on closer to the £250k that Martial is supposed to be.

Of course, all the numbers would be including all the bonuses, some (many?) of which wouldn't be getting hit.

Analysing him like this based on his stats/play at Barca is so pointless
I took a look at his time at Ajax and national team too to compare why he struggles at Barca but thrives in other set ups. Conclusion being that ETH knows him a lot better than Xavi and he shouldn’t be written off based on Barca form.

I suppose they've been obsessed with statement signings since Neymar left. And this is the club that got La Liga to reopen the transfer window so that they could sign Martin fecking Braithwaite, so I guess it makes sense that they feel there's always some way of getting what they want.

A better clear conclusion is this quote from Frenkie himself to identify the difference in the short and simple words. ETH programmed him to be the first player to receive the ball while Xavi programmed that role to Busquets.

players who can only excel playing in a highly specialised role make me suspicious. Also who does his job for us if he gets injured. Anyway Im sure ETH has the answers

Yeah I don't understand it either. They keep signing/trying to sign expensive new players while saddled with a billion quid of debt. It's akin to seeing a person on the brink of bankruptcy listing their unwanted possessions on ebay and then going to a BMW dealership to buy a new car

I don't think its so much this. More that Barcelona also have Gavi and Pedri who will be catered for more than De Jong. The fact Xavi rates him so highly despite making him adapt to a different role tells us he's good

We are used to individual brilliance. It's time we are changing to proper coaching and highly specific instruction on players.

Maybe we can kind of guess the answer to the second point by comparing his most recent Ajax side to his semi-final one?

Daley Blind takes a lot of the responsibilities De Jong had, just from a different position. Could be that we sign a fullback who can also help build play, just in a different way, so that we have some flexibility in how we play out or, as you say, cover for injuries.

Yes but players need to be versatile which is one of ETHs main things he likes about a player too. This is because an injury should not change the way you play

Good point. Interested to see how it plays out
