Yeah I get that. It wasn’t meant to suggest they are a small club by any means and a first option agreement doesn’t have to mean no negotiation or competition for a good player.

It just seems like Sporting could use some help competing against Porto and Benfica and maybe we could supply it in a mutually beneficial way.

In truth those ‘farm’ teams (vitesse/Antwerp) haven’t ever really produced a player for the first XI so probably a bit pointless in the end.
I mean I think Sporting and United have good enough relations where they might like to work with United more and it could help facilitate a deal.

I do think United could help us compete with Porto or Benfica but not by loaning us Youngsters but rather making deals in the mold of the Rojo one where we got a player like Nani who was head and shoulder the best player in our league at that time.

Just the idea of loaning in youngsters does not make sense for us because we produce young players at a very high rate so it would not make sense unless we get to own a big percentage or something like that.

Generally agree, so I won’t throw the baby out with the bath water, but Henning Berg was not crap. He made 29 appearances in the treble season and would’ve played more if it wasn’t for injury. Possibly including the final. SAF trusted him in the big European games and he was particularly brilliant in both QF legs against Inter.
You're probably right, simon I've done a lot of drugs during and since those days and honestly don't remember much about Berg.

I think you’re being very harsh on Henning Berg who I’d have down as a very good signing! Alan Smith was a great squad option too until his broken leg
Probably. Don't get me wrong, I loved Smudge but that leg break killed his career with us and that can't be ignored when considering the signing. Bad luck to be sure but...

And rightly so, most of us football purists still think of Sporting CP as a bigger club than City.
Because we are!

Money don’t buy history. Manchester City is a “bigger” club financially but they are no where near Sporting historically which is why it felt great to knock them out of the Europa league In the 11/12 season.

It's the same with Chelsea and PSG, nobody can convince me that they are worthy of being included in a list of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Over the last 20 Years? You guys have got the best 3 for sure. Ronaldo, Nani, and Bruno have been the best by far. You guys got the best of the bunch for sure.

Others that could of been good players for United are Joao Moutinho and William I would say.

I will leave you with this though..3 Names to keep an eye out for an check back with me in a few years

- Eduardo Quaresma (CB) 18 Years of age
- Nuno Mendes (Left back) 18 years of age
- Joelson Fernandes (Winger) 17 years of age

The first 2 have been fantastic tonight and the third might make his debut in the second half.
Been very impressed with Quaresma, seen his last few games on FreeSport, like Dalot when I first saw him, if I didn't know his age i'd think he was 26/27

And Mendes looks very talented going forward, not so much defensively. It will be interesting to see how he develops that side of his game as he gets older.

Close call between Leeds and Sporting for me. I am giving advantage to Leeds. Two members of our all time PL best 11.

If you look at it from a success/trophy standpoint then you’d have to say Leeds just for Cantona and Rio alone and you could say the same for Spurs with Teddy, Carrick and Berbatov.

If Fernandes continues as he has played and even improves then him added to Ronaldo and to a lesser extent Nani you’d have to throw them in to complete the top three, PSV is also a great selection and I kind of wish we’d keep a closer eye on the Dutch league again as there’s a lot of potentially great young players coming through over there especially at AZ Alkmaar.

Ya Quaresma has everything to be our "De Ligt" he is a class act on the pitch and you gave the best example of that when you said he looks like a seasoned player and he is only 18. He is also quite good on the ball for a CB.

That was Nuno Mendes first Start for the club at just 17 years old and he is also one of our most talented players coming through. He has the "body" and athleticism/technical ability to be a top level left back in a few years.

Joelson will be another one to look out for in due time!

The Sporting Well is starting to show signs of life again and we have a coach who is not afraid to play the youngsters at the moment.

You can quote me that Quaresma will be the captain in a few years.

Some great stuff here lads.

I was going to put Cobh Ramblers but then I remembered Notts Forest bought Keane from them (for £45k iirc) then we bought him from them, for £3m plus.

Arsenal: RVP and Sanchez. Only 50-50.

The club obviously have high hopes, didn't he sign a 5 year contract on his 18th birthday in March? Not sure if that's the norm however highly he is rated.

I'd already seen Nuno Mendes before his debut for the first-team albeit only on a YouTube video after he was linked to United recently, and i've just watched Joelson "Diamond Kid" Fernandes as well.

Sporting CP's away match at Belenenses is live on FreeSports this Friday so it'll be another chance to see the three lads you named to look out for again.

Quaresma will certainly be starting and there is talks Acuna might still be out with an injury so Nuno Mendes will start if that is the case.

Joelson was on the bench in the last game and hopefully he gets his debut on Friday!

Also Quaresma signed his new contract last week with a buyout of 45M.

That seems low when you consider how much some clubs are prepared to pay for potential these days.

So..

Sporting gave us flair.
PSV brought us expensive specialists.
Spurs sold us expensive supporting tools.
Leeds send us expensive stars.
Blackburn supply us defenders.
Fulham provided us missing ingredients.
Everton blast us with cannon balls.
Villa fuel us with speed.
We did pull one over on the Toffees by conning them into giving us £25 for that lump Morgan Schniederlin... and letting them sign Tom Cleverly

Sporting fans are not happy about it but it comes as no surprise to us when you realize how terrible our president is. The same buyout was made for Nuno Mendes.

Don't know how reliable O Jogo are but was reading this earlier and aren't the club looking to up Joelson's buyout clause which is the same currently as Nuno Mendes's because clubs like Arsenal are already sniffing around him?

Ya they are in negotiations but since he isn't 18 yet he can't sign a 5 year deal. So if he was to sign an extension now it could only be 3 years.

They are actively negotiating with him as they want to avoid a Tiago Djalo situation from last summer.

Ahead of tomorrow’s match, I found myself thinking about potential starting lineups and was genuinely excited to see Bruno again. It got me to thinking, we have a nice little record of making signings from Sporting:

Cristiano
Nani
Bruno

The one potential blotch on that record, for me, is Rojo. Whilst not the worst player I’ve ever seen, I don’t think I could call him a successful signingAnyway, those signings ensure we have a nice record of signing players from Sporting. Whilst this is far from comprehensive, I’ve had a little think about other crops of players we’ve signed from one club.

PSV:
van Nistelrooy
Stam
Park
Memphis

Spurs:
Berbatov
Carrick
Sheringham

Leeds:
Cantona
Ferdinand
Smith

Blackburn:
Berg
May
Jones (lol)

Fulham:
Saha
Van der Sar
Smalling

Everton:
Rooney
Fellaini
Lukaku

Monaco:
Martial
Barthez
Evra

I was thinking about Atleti and Villa as potential options; however, I couldn’t quite recall any other transfers from the respective clubs, other than:

Villa:
Yorke
Young

Atletico:
Fortune
De Gea

To substantiate any claim, I tried to cite at least three signings from one club. With that said, it’s not rigid and fewer signings of a higher quality, could supersede more signings of less quality. Based on those I have provided, I’d lean towards Sporting, Leeds, Spurs or PSV. Having said that, I’ve probably missed something glaring and made a fool of myself.

Anyway, what do we say, chaps? From which club do we have the best track record of making signings from? Also, if this has already been done, I sincerely apologise and feel free to delete/ignore.
We should've signed Robben from PSV too if Kenyon hadn't ballsed it up. The player had visited United and was all set to sign. Van Nistelrooy, Stam, Robben, Park and Depay would've been the clear winner and it might have meant no Nani, due to Robben being at the club which would've been fine with the benefit of hindsight.

Maybe we can sign Mohammed Ihattren from them to seal it or SCP could take the lead with us signing a player like Eduardo Quaresma.

I am glad Quaresmas name is getting out there ;)

Here is another talented player this time a midfielder who is currently on loan and that I hope gets promote next season as he has a bit of class to his game,

Daniel Braganca

I've been keeping a eye on your academy in Alcochete and it seems like there's some very talented young players starting to emerge again from the famed SCP academy.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how 20 year old midfielder Vitinha develops at Porto. He looked such a fantastic talent at youth level with enormous potential, very elegant player with superb technique. And then there's 17 year old prodigy Fabio Silva who is a great striker in the making and already part of the Porto first team. The Portistas will be happy..

I'm not gonna mention anyone from Benfica.. :D

RVP- Alexis-Stapleton and Viv Anderson from Arsenal.
Three out of four is not bad and maybe Alexis will surprise us all in July.
By the way...Anderson was Fergie’s first signing at Utd.

Knew he'd gone to AC Milan but didn't realise he signed a 5 year deal at Lille only 6 months later.

Porto have a good generation but they dont play there young guys. Fabio Silva is still too young to show what his potential is but time will tell. They're youth team has won a lot and there are interesting talents.

Sporting have a young striker called Tiago Tomas but I wont say anything until I see him in the first team. Strikers are the hardest positions to make so it's hard to tell unless you see them in first team action. The Sporting Academy looks as though it is pumping again which is important as we have been the main provider of talent for the Portuguese national team for many many years.

Benfica youth products are all overrated :) Thats not even coming from hate but rather the numbers show it. Bernardo Silva is there best talent but he was not made in Benfica. He played a handful of games and it was Monaco who truly developed him.

Renato was a flop and the jury is out on Felix but he is massively hyped as well :nervous: Then Andre Gomes, Cancelo, I guess semedo is alright.

He was packaged in a deal for Rafael Leao. Both very talented players. Leao is a rat though.

Yeah remember that now, we had a lad with the same name on trial from Desportivo Brasil a few years previous. I won't ask you why you think Leao is a rat, there might be children reading ;)
Ya so don't ask me what I think about Moutinho :keano:;)

You still haven't forgiven him for moving to Porto have you
Do I seem like a guy who would forgive our captain since the age of 18 leaving the club who raised him and made him the player he is to go play for our rivals up north and win constant trophies?

Does that seem like something I would forgive?:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Listen, to keep it short and sweet...and I will say it nicely because its been a few years since he has left...He is...a....TWAT!

With regards to strikers/goalscorers we've done some decent business with Arsenal:
David Herd (144 goals)
Frank Stapleton (78 goals)
RVP ( won us a title)
2 disasters from the same club:
Ian Ure
Alexis Sanchez
Then there was George Graham who people wonder if he really played for us.

Ya! Tonight was a poor game tbh.

Quaresma was shaken but Nuno Mendes showed quality.

Jovane has been on an absolute tear as of late.

I didn't watch all of it but saw Quaresma's error that lead to their early goal.

Not sure why but had Cabral down as 26/27 but been impressed what i've seen of him this last few weeks. I missed it but guessing he got to re-take the saved penalty?
