There's a trend of top clubs signing centre backs to able to switch to 3 when needed. It seems to be the in thing. Shaw did a reasonable job when asked this season but Magalhaes is a specialist and looks a good prospect, strong in the tackle and can play.
Did you bold this because you thought your post was more important than everyone else's? :p

Everton's perspective on players is so dodgy that I'd be nervous if it really was us and them in for him.

And how many times have you actually seen the later play?
Enough to say he's not strong in tackling both ground & air as Upamecano, but price sounds exactly what Woodward suggested when saying 'very carefuly' in the market.

Saw him vs Monaco last year in in the cup and he was solid. Lille's goal difference overall looks decent this season.

If it was a You tube contest, I'd have Pau Torres anyday. Gabriel's highlights vids don't look that impressive which is worrisome. Sadly Villarreal are looking to cash in big so a Gabriel deal looks the more economical. I kinda thought we were looking for a starting upgrade on Lindelof though. Those will never come cheap...

Exactly what I thought too :D. Looked impressive with his passing range, effortless with the ball and not too bad with a tackle. Gabriel on the other hand, a bit meh tbh.

Not sure about buying a relatively unknown player from the French league for for that price it’s low risk he could be a gem.

One or two have turned out pretty well. However he's not that unknown

Never seen him play. But it’s about time we pulled some transfers that turn out to be ‘hidden’ gems, after all doesn’t take a scout to tell you Kane, Mbappe etc are good for United. But it does to find relativity unknown talent. Its what they are paid for after all, can’t remember the last time we signed a first team player who was hardly known who turned out well. I mean this guy can’t be worst than Jones! So that’s a positive.

Five years ago, when Martial was signed.

Kabak, Konate and Torres are better options I think
Absolutely, but I just don't think we'll be spending 50-80m on a defender anytime soon... and now the thing with Shaw injured makes it even more complicated to address.

Kabak OR Konate available for 40M or less
Konate last report to United was in May, Kabak is supposedly Liverpool's target, but they look like not spending much this summer.

Ole still not decided or United simply poking to find the best bargain out of all these CB targets ?

Never noticed him until we were linked to him. I have no idea how good he is at football, but his physique is good and he is fairly handsome. Hope we sign him.

Bild reported Kabak is worth €30m. I think that's a bargain

You just said you hope we don't get Gabriel. What does your hope have to do with Ole's claims? Furthermore none of them are left-footed which Ole is looking for if Ole's word is all we're going after..
Why is he looking for a left footer when McGuire plays there for club and country?

Maybe Ole is happy with Lindelof and Maguire and just wants cover. Ole also tends to go with 3 at the back on some occasions, which would mean, despite Shaw doing a good job when played there, he can put in Gabriel, for example, and move Shaw into his more suited left wing back role.

I guess ole wants Macgyver to stay on the right side? Or maybe for a back 3 he wants a proper left sided CB for balance

When Shaw has played in the LCB role he has been excellent and Williams also gets games at the LB role to continue his development and then once Axel is fit again plus there is big expectations on Mengi so there is no need.
I am all for bringing in players where we are short and where we have nothing with good potential on the horizon but in all honesty if we are going to Jump on everything some desperate journo posts it won’t be long before there will be more footballers on this planet with links to Utd than Coveid cases in the US.

Would be a useful addition for about €25m. Not for €63m media are reporting. There are, arguably, better CBs available for half that price.
He was elected by Uefa as the best CB of La Liga. Of course he is not a €25m player

No idea what he is really like, but Smalling looks like a better player based on some YouTube scouting.

Jump on everything? Not sure where you've got that from. I was explaining what could potentially happen if we were to get a centre back.

Ole quite clearly said he wanted a left-footed centre back. Now, that centre back may not be Gabriel, but with the likelihood of Rojo, Smalling and Jones all departing this summer, and the uncertainty over Bailly and Tuanzebe's fitness, it's quite obvious we're in need of a centre back.

As for Mengi, if he's good enough, he will get his chance, but it's a bit of a risk going into next season having to potentially rely on n 18 year old, but I guess you're one of those people who are saying not to get Sancho because it will stop the development of Greenwood.

Fact is, United have, and will always have competition for places. It's the reason we won so many titles under Sir Alex. As I said before, if you're good enough, you will play.

Yikes, this guy scares the hell out of me when he has to slide in for a tackle. He is fine as long as he is standing up, but when he has to go to the ground he looks so awkward.

Like someone posted above you've got to make a few signings now and then that aren't getting all the hype. I would worry that Everton rate him, though!

Probably same reason as LVG did, to build play more effectively from both centre backs and through both channels. Obviously that only makes sense if the left footed centre back is good technically. Whether you think there's any real value is another matter but City and Bayern play left footed players at LCB. Interestingly two of our four CM's (Matic and Fred) are left footed, statistically the chances of that bring by chance are slim, so there's obviously a certain amount of this type of thinking going on at the club.

So how many of the best teams in the world or even teams that have really been successful have had left footed CBs? and while Ole has been at the club Rojo has been fit on occasions but I do not recall him being played there.
The two best footballers I have ever seen are left footed so I am not anti left (not football anyway) but LVG is the only manager I have heard off that said he wants a LCB.
Blind Rojo and Hogg are the only two left footed CBs I recall at our club and they rank as the worst I have seen.

So out of the 3 of them both of them were the worst you've seen

If Ole and the coaches think it'll help the balance of the team or they want to try a different system, then their jobs rest of their purchases. Increased competition and more flexability in the squad shouldn't be viewed as a negative.

For myself I want the club to sign Konate, as long as his hip issues are going to be a thing of the past and he's right footed.
