I like Bentley as a player. His wing ability and set plays is closest thing to Beckham's. He'd be better if he'd stop deluding himself that he in fact is as good as Beckham.

Glaston may differ, but he's entitled to his opinion.

It isn't wumming. Does the thought police deem those differing opinions criminal in nature?
I have a little bit of sympathy because I hate when people I think I am a wum.

I cannot agree with the Valencia/Bentley view, but if that is what you think, that is ok, but be prepared for a lot of people thinking you are insane.

Ok, fair enough.

Honestly, though, Bentley isn't a patch on either Park or Valencia. Seriously.
Dunno Pogue, I can remember more instance of Bentley running games and producing moments of sheer magic than Valencia or Park. Probably a weak memory thing.

Cheers. That's the purpose of this whole Internet forum thing...would be boring if it were a huge 'Yes' fest, innit?

 @ Bentley over Valencia.
I can see his point about Bentley being more likely to create something out of nothing, the only issue is that one moment is once a year whereas Valencia is such a consistent player even if he is a tad predictable. No contest, physically and in terms of intelligence... Valencia would be starting at Spurs, Bentley can barely feature off the bench.

Bentley is a serious talent whose off pitch problems have fecked up his career. If he had either of Valencia's or Park's attitude and work ethic he'd be one heck of a player.
This. Bentley was class at Blackburn when he was playing day in and out. His big move blew up in his face and now he rots on the bench - wasted. Lest we all forget at one point, he was played in an international friendly over Beckham and all :D

In all seriousness, I could see Ashley Young to Spurs in exchange for a bit of money and Bentley. The right footed wonder and the left footed wonder with Ireland and Petrov in the middle is good enough for a team that's looking at mid level mediocrity again for the next couple years. And Young would be absolute class for Spurs - big fan of his.

Expect Gabby to be next to leave next summer.

... Valencia would be starting at Spurs ...
He wouldn't, because he we already have Bale and Lennon ... or not unless Bale dropped back to take Ekotto's LB slot.

Where are you from Salvation?
I lie within...as Shawshank Redemption puts it.

In the real world, I'm from Bombay, India. :)

Valencia is better than lennon. Much more consistent.
On the ball, Lennon is so much better, IMO.

But I know what you mean. Experience works in Valencia's favour, being the finished article.

Valencia would be starting on the right for Spurs, no doubt. That said, Lennon would definitely feature in at least half of Spurs games, still. Valencia would be the starter, though.

You can't be serious! No one in their right mind would think Lennon is a better bet over a season than Valencia. Valencia has far, far greater consistency and has far better end product.

Who do you think Rooney preferred playing with last summer - Valencia for United, or Lennon with England? I'm certain he'd say Valencia every time.

You do realise he's only a couple of years older? He's got a lot of improvement still to come.

That's without even mentioning he's only just finished his debut season with a new club.

Yup.

As I said in one of the previous posts, I'd have a young winger who knows how to beat his man than one who assures a good final delivery. The former, for me, is a rare skill. The latter can be honed. I do see Lennon becoming more of an inside forward than a winger.

If I could further push the envelope on those who believe Valencia would easily walk the Spurs side over Lennon, it's a very biased opinion. Lennon's being groomed to become probably England's best winger in a long while. It's like saying Park would have easily toppled Ronaldo in 05/06.

It's beyond me how some people still think Lennon is better than a Valencia as a winger.
 exactly. I can't believe how underrated some of our players are by some of our "own" fans.

Also "Lennon being primed to be England's right winger" - yeah right. He'll struggle to get into the side as usual.

Can't be arsed reading through this thread, but as I said before the end of last season, two players who would have made a world of difference to our team (or any team) are Bale and Rodwell. Both are chuffing fantastic.

Lennon before his injury last season was the best winger in the league I thought, he was a changed player - he was crossing from deep, he was picking out players, he was cutting in(off either wing) and taking a shot, and in general he improved in the areas he was mainly criticised for, IMO.

A brief example of him now taking more time to pick out his man, and showing a willingness to cross from deep rather than simply get to the byline and fire it in, would be his cross for Bale's goal at the weekend.

I'm not saying he is or isn't better than Valencia, we use him in a fairly specialised role that most wingers can't play - he's vital in pressing the play high up the pitch and allowing our midfielders to advance and compress the opposition midfield, and he provides plenty of cover for a position that we've had a few problems over the past year at right back, for a couple of examples.

Lennon's definitely showing signs of improvement though, when it looked to me like he might have stagnated somewhat. Last year he had more assists than he'd ever had before despite only playing half a season.

i'm not making any claims to superior insight or judgment, but I've always that that of all the Utd players, Valencia was the most overrated by folks on this forum

(and, as always, calling him overrated doesn't mean I don't think he's good)

It's not laughable to compare Lennon and Valencia. I think Lennon at his best is better. But to be honest, I don't think I watch Spurs often enough to know how consistent he is. I think I'll need to watch them a little longer to come to a conclusion.
