Gary Neville - Pundit

These are the comments under scrutiny:

“I’m no further forward with him,” Neville told NBC Sports of Sesko. “The jury is out. He’s well off it compared to the other summer signings Manchester United made up front, like Cunha and Mbeumo.

“He looks awkward. He had a couple of good opportunities against Forest, but his touch wasn’t quite right. For £80 million, you can say he’s young and settling in, but you still want to see a bit more.”

We'll skip the weird idiom "I'm no further forward with him".

On the next point, Cunha and Mbeumo, ages 26 and 26, have load of PL experience under their belts. These two were plug-and-play footballers, as close to being polished gems as is humanly possible. The past two months were literally (and I mean literally in a literal sense) Sesko's first two months in the PL and he's only 22 years old, nowhere near close to being the polished gem by anyone's timeline. Of course Sesko won't be at the level of Cunha and Mbeumo already. This was a pointlessly stupid comment by the United legend.

Does he "look awkward"? He's tall, but Benjamin Sesko is no Peter Crouch, but considering his 6'5" frame he looks very comfortable on the ball and in fact his holdup play has been outstanding. But beyond that he has actually scored 2 goals so far and come close on a number of other occasions. We're still not delivering the kind of service that a CF needs (true last season as well) but he's carving half-chances into shots that worry a keeper for a moment. But no, he's no RvN just yet.

Yes, you can say he's young -- because guess what, he is! -- and settling in -- because, guess what, he is! -- and yes we do want to see more, there isn't a single United supporter, other than Gary Neville, who has expressed this kind of disappointment in Sesko.

He doesn’t act like a United fan. I’ve always got the sense from him and scholes that they low key enjoy the teams struggles since they’ve left because it reinforces how great of a team they were. Neville takes any opportunity to stick the knife in with United yet. He has twice now gone for Sesko, despite the lad actually doing ok so far. Why doesn’t he talk about it Isak or Writz, who cost almost 300m between them and have looked piss poor so far?
Totally agree.

Excellent post.

I’ve always felt this. They aren’t for shutting down discourse at all, they fuel it if anything. Love Keane but he feels a bit similar in that regard.

Not saying they should be full Rio or even Evra but you can tell the club getting back to where they were matters to them. For some of the old guard it feels a bit like it’s about their legacies first.

I’ve never been really convinced they’d enjoy a dominant United today, not that it matters….

Yeah it’s very strange, Scholes and Neville are the worst for me, they just have almost nothing good to say about the club nowadays. Listening to Scholes on that overlap fans debate makes my ears bleed. And listening to Neville commentary on United games is horrendous. He was deplorable the other day. I remember when we beat City a year ago, after Amad got the winner the first thing that Neville said was “not one single Man United fan can say they deserve that”

like really? We’ve just come back from 1-0 down, got a winner in the last minute against Manchester fu*king City and that’s what comes out of your mouth.

Yep. He’s being such a “pick me” with that take.

He is way too concerned with how he’s viewed by abus.

Carragher is so much more measured in my view re Liverpool and he’s as an ex legend of his club should be, notwithstanding that disgusting spitting incident that should have ended his sky career….

Now he's complaining about De Ligt and Casemiro not doing enough as our experienced players. Both are having excellent seasons so no idea what he's waffling on about now.

It's starting to feel like he's annoyed at the club or manager for something. He's desperate to push a narrative that we're shit.

Also why does he keep quoting £80M. If you are going to slag someone off publicly then at least get the facts correct. But £66M doesn’t have the same impact so I know why he is doing it.

Usually at odds with Nev's punditry but not about Seako. There's definitely a player there but there's also another Hojlund-style flop.

Jury's out is a fair take.

Can't help but feel Nevilles recent flag commentary will count against him, perhaps more than it should.

It's time that united showed some teeth. Journalists and pundits who criticise us unfairly should be banned from OT until they either apologize or they explain themselves. That's what SAF would have done

The problem is we can barely back it up and look silly when we drop points. I think it's better that Amorim comes out in his presser backing Sesko and telling Neville to wind his neck in.

Yes he's a pundit and it's his job but he, more than anyone else involved in football media, should know exactly the impact his words will have on a Man Utd player whether that be Sesko or anyone else. He could've worded his opinion on Sesko in a thousand different ways, but rather than offer up any encouragement to the positive bits of play we've all seen, he instead comes out with something that sounds more or less like he's writing him off already.

Absolut

Absolutely agree on this. Neville very rarely fires Utd up with motivating words at any point. I think these days he prefers bigging up Lfc more than us! Great player, terrible manager. As for his punditry well, yes, he has every right to comment on things but he also needs to motivate, especially when it's his former team!

His latest comments about the "aging spine" of the team are odd too. We are by every metric a young squad. And we are mid rebuild. And its basically just the midfield 2 and Maguire and Shaw from the players who are getting game time this year. And none of them are really old. Some of these guys, young and old, will hopefully be replced in the next 2 or 3 windows anyway.

Young core: Lammens (23) - Maz (27) - Yoro (19) - De Ligt (26) - Heaven (19) - Dalot (26) - Amad (23) - Dorgu (21) - Mbuemo (26) - Cunha (26) - Sesko (22) - Mount (26) - Zirkzee (24) - Ugarte (24) - Mainoo (20) - Chido Obi (17)

Older Core: Maguire (32) - Bruno (31) - Casemiro (33) - Shaw (30)

Every one of these guys are younger than Van Dijk. And it has always been generally accepted that it is good to have experienced players to nurture the younger ones.

By every metric this is a young squad. Do we need to replace some older players, especially the midfield 2? Yes. But the world and his dog knows that is the plan in the next season. And with no European football, combined with the early exit from the League Cup, the workload is as low as it hopefully ever will be. So it's less of a problem. So yet again, he is talking absolute negative nonsense again when it is just not needed.

Howson said that there's a team who constantly demands explanation for every piece of criticism thrown at their club.in the end it tires the journalist off and would therefore back off. I think we need to show some teeth. Gaz is particularly vulnerable considering he's involved in the regeneration project and his job is tied to him being the 'man utd voice'. If the club makes it obvious that he's clearly biased then why would sky need him?

I have gone cold on old Gaz at this stage, i wonder is he really giving an honest opinion or is he being given talking points and buttons to press by Sky. I few years ago i would have thought 'man of the people' Gary would never do this but after seeing him parading around Davos smoozing with his WEF buddies and goodness knows what else, selling out would not shock me.

Full on board with his flag take. Spot on there.

His punditry is dreadful at times. He will never ever give us or a player the benefit of the doubt. Will always be negative. Jury's still out but he slates him - so no the jury isn't still out, Nev has his agenda sorted.

I flip flop with him. Sometimes I quite like him and other times not so much

But, recently he’s on an aggressive downward trajectory in my opinion at least.

I have found him over bearing. He gives his opinion. Listens to someone else’s…and then tries HARD to convince the other person that his opinion is correct. Sounds like a percentage of posters on here eh hahaha.

Will never understand why people care so much about pundits' personal opinions. They are paid to give their opinions. Fans get way too wound up by it. It's really not that serious.

Also it's pretty hypocritical to see these contrasting reactions to different pundits. Never saw anyone here moaning when Roy Keane said he would have thrown punches at De Gea at half time and wouldn't let Maguire get on the team bus.

Neville spent 19 seasons as Manchester United’s right-back and his manager throughout that time, Sir Alex Ferguson, knew how to deal with him.

‘”Gary, go and annoy someone else,” he used to say.

He has been playing to the gallery and his paymasters for years. His over critical analysis of his former club speaks loudly about what means most to him. And clearly thats his massive bank balance.

His legend status has been tarnished a long time ago.

Ban him from Old Traffird

A young Alex Ferguson in charge of Urd would have done so years ago.

Banning Gary Neville from Old Trafford over his punditry is among the more absurd things I've ever heard on this forum.

That said, he's had weird opinions throughout Amorim's tenure. Highlights and praises players who aren't playing well, attacks those who are (not saying Sesko is, but in general). It's often nonsensical from him when it comes to United.

The weirdest thread on the Caf strikes again. When did people start being afraid of someone saying something they disagree with? Just, you know, disagree.

What exactly are the impact of his words?

Agree. Some very soft fans in this thread.

People crying during the Liverpool game because he had the nuclear hot take of "Utd need to get to half time with the lead" showed how silly this has become. Just a circle jerk of incredibly sensitive people overreacting to a lot of very mild takes.
