Gary Neville - Pundit

Replay showing Bruno winning the ball. Neville, "He swiped right through him."

I rarely ever listen to him, but he's really a shit commentator and rarely adds anything worthwhile.

Thought the same.

I’m shocked by how bad he was on that Arsenal game. Really terrible commentator. Just overreacting to everything.

A brilliant RB, and businessman, but his punditry is painful to listen to. Better to hear a cat in heat than Gary Neville opine on contemporary football matters.

Latest podcast is again a negative click bait title about Sesko. It's so obvious the guy doesn't want the players to really succeed. Just another hater.

That's why I stopped watching The Overlap. It's all about him and his own voice.

Last night’s game was pretty even (I think United shaded it), yet at the end Neville described it as a United “smash and grab”. Could anyone imagine him using that term had Everton scored the only goal?

None of this is to question his affiliation to United, but such is his determination not to be perceived as biased in our favour, he often leans too far the other way, and therefore appears unnecessarily harsh in his comments.

Barring the unbelievable move for our goal, I thought both teams struggled to pass the ball and retain possession last night.

What really annoys me about GN is that he preaches in such an authoritative manner implying he has all the solutions. If that's the case why has Salford's rise stalled.

Yes appointing Carrick carries a risk, but surely whoever we appoint carries an element of risk. At the moment I'm enjoying the ride under Carrick and I couldn't say that under Amorin.

Now we are playing well, he will start supporting united again.

Thundercnut.

Or, now that Utd are playing well and winning games he will start saying more consistently positive things about Utd.

What an unfathomable correlation.

His job ain't to support Utd on commentary, so much of the nonsense in this thread comes from that misconception.

I think people realise your last point though? It sees the criticisms come from him seemingly going too far the other way in a bid to look unbiased.

I just don't hear the anti Utd bias that so many have claimed from him, yes he has been critical, Utd being dogshit for years should lead to criticism but even in the last month of Amorins reign he was seeing some positives and stating them until the Wolves home game were he pretty much gave up on him.

Maybe you could say he expects higher standards from Utd than from other clubs, but more Utd fans need that approach, the we don't end up with guys like Ten Hag and Amorin lasting far longer than they should have done.

When he is audibly celebrating wins against Liverpool and City and fans still act as if he is anti Utd it is just ridiculous.

Fully agree. It's like being critical of your own kids more than others because you want them to be the best.

My thoughts exactly, the criticism of Neville on here is ridiculous. Anyone who says he’s anti United and genuinely believes that, is plain thick

I don’t mind him having high standards. I don’t doubt he’s a United fan, of course he is. I do think that on comms he kicks up a fuss around situations in game involving us that he wouldn’t necessarily do for others. He lets his own biases about certain players at the club trickle into his comms.

Things like the Sesko narrative or even when he made up Bruno asking to come off. It’s grating. Speaking of his comms in general the guy never shuts up.

He was awful tonight!

He’s a much better pundit than a co-commentator.
I agree. Good pundit, bad commentator. I've noticed sometimes when there's a goal scored, he's silent for a long time because he's obviously watching replays and taking notes before giving his analysis of the action. It's a very unnatural commentary.

Well said.

It crazy that some United fans think he is "anti United". Imagine what fans of other clubs feel about having a United legend on commentary every weekend.

Did he ever speak on Ratcliff's "colonized by immigrants" remark? Considering how vocal and opiniated he has been on these issues in the past, it would be very disappointing if he did not speak anything against it.

What’s the matter with him today? Feels like he’s taken a horse tranquiliser before the game.

I think we all know his wages and transfer fee.

His salary is part of the equation in keeping him, no? That is even if he wants to stay.
I don’t. And that’s not the point.

Commentator said Casemiro would be a tough act to follow and Gary said he’d had “a few” ok months and threw the £140m straight in.

You didn’t know he was on a whopping salary and cost us £60mil?

Casemiro will be a tough act to follow on recent form, especially because of his goals and experience. But that doesn’t mean we should be sentimental all of a sudden and be asking for another year.

Good for first season. Good for most of this season. But let’s not forget that he was poor for two seasons.

The fact that he lost weight and “got fit” last summer shows us he wasn’t giving this all for us in those second and third seasons.

You would do well to find any fan that wanted to keep him post the 24/25 season.

Casemiro's third season was fine. Not great or anything, but certainly not poor. Probably about the same as he was for most of this season, although obviously he's stepped up another level since Carrick came in.

It was only his second season that was shit, but there hasn't been a midfielder in the history of the game that could have looked good in the suicidal setup that ETH has us playing that season. While Casemiro did seem to be playing half-arsed for the final couple of months of that season, I found it hard to blame him too much considering the ridiculousness he was having to put up with. There were times you could see him looking around in disbelief of what was going on.

Regardless of system or team setup, when you look at his total contribution over four years, has he been worth £350k a week and a £70mil transfer fee with no sell on?

To be fair, that’s on us. Not many players can live up to that.

I’d also argue that Casemiro’s performances in the EL were a big factor in getting to the final. The performance against Atletico Bilbao in particular was Roy Keane like.

Giggs and Scholes had longevity because SAF knew how to use them as they got older. Neville should know that better than anyone.

There´s no comparison with Ten Hag who ripped up his own good work to play his stupid doughnut and isolate an aging Case.

Case has basically had one bad season when the entire world was pointing out how defensively exposed Ten Hag´s system was, expecting Case to do the job of a prime Makelele.
