Gary Neville - Pundit

Sometimes you listen to him and think he’s not had a modern opinion about football since about 2006, whether or not Liverpool were right to do it a team starting a game without a recognised 9 shouldn’t seem such a completely foreign concept to the country’s highest profile football pundit
He himself was a horrible manager who had a disastrous spell at Valencia. And he got the job only because he knows Peter Lim (owner of Valencia and Salford City) so I wouldnt expect him to know much about tactics.

In fact out of all ex-player pundits I find Henry to be the only one whose analysis is quality. Sometimes he dissects an attacking movement piece by piece and he can do it because he was a top striker himself. When Gary talks about tactics you can just yawn at it.

Whenever he appears on screen to talk about United he does 2 things:
1. Be critical of whatever to make it look like he is neutral
2. Say something spicy for engagements

He wasn’t too bad today but he made a big deal out of that Fernandes challenge and you could tell he was desperate to create controversy and have more to be made of it.

He’s a fecking bellend and if I never hear a word from him again I’ll live a happy life.

He’s the only “ex club” pundit who feels the need to try so hard to be “impartial”, instead of making him seem better in the eyes of other fans it makes him look more of a weasel. It’s odd, needy, behaviour. His analysis used to be far better than it is now. He’s only on commentary now to lean into or create controversy.

Made a big deal out of that Fernandes challenge and was being pedantic over the Sesko goal. Its not a fecking hand ball if it grazes his nail. Ffs Gary.

Any clips of this?
Probably on YouTube. Carragher was saying Liverpool are in a stronger position to challenge for the league ahead of United whereas Gary felt the opposite.

Gary argument was that United beat Liverpool twice and finishing above them. Carragher arguement was that United had less matches to play.

In the podcast or the studio?

It is though. That’s been the rule for years.

His hysteria about the Bruno foul was infuriating, I agree.
When I heard him, I assumed I’d missed how bad it was live……then the replay happened and I was expecting ‘full force into the ankle’ type stuff. But it was a bit of a nothing tackle

I agree he tries to avoid being biased for united, but if anyone was asked their opinion as much as neville is then you would start getting lots wrong because you would become more knee jerk and have less time to think stuff through. For example if the best cafe posters had to post everyday many times as their job they would start getting things wrong too.

That Ooooouuuuugggghhh noise he makes when big goals are scored is so annoying. Sounds like Ian Beale being pleasured and I could do without it.

It's strange how some ex players like Neville have really poor takes on footballing situations. He's hard for me to listen to.

Gary brings big amazing person I admire energy

Not a single word when Arsenal take 3 minutes over a corner where they assault the opposition team but then creaming over that getting disallowed

As much as a bellend Andy Gray was, Gary is nowhere near him at his peak. I hope he just goes full time overlap in the next year. He had the funny moments with the Torres goal at the start, but other than that he’s been shite as a commentator.

Sky will never boot him

Andy Gray was and is a colossal bell as you say but you're absolutely right about his commentary. Gray could add to the sense of occasion and provide some interesting observations as to what he was seeing on the pitch, and he had a voice and delivery that suited Premier League football. Neville is a wet paper tissue reaching for narratives and hot takes for content, and his voice only detracts from the intensity of a match.

Just a totally different age.
Sky was all new and only for certain people who could afford it / wanted a dish on their house. There weren't many games either.

Those "woosh" noises all sounded fresh and his voice was perfect for it all.

These days it's all so accessible, not fresh at all, way too many games available, you could get Murray Walker at peak and it wouldn't feel hype.

All very true. Plenty of nostalgia in my recollections, for sure. Someone like Ron Atkinson was the same era as Gray but didn't command the attention in the same way. There is something about a Scotsman with a gruff voice talking over the footy, though. Gary's whiney drone and strange grunted/breathy vocalizations are just annoying, innit.

Atkinson was great on Champions league midweekers. Whenever we played away to a dodgy but shit team he always put you at ease.

Sorry I should be clear that I loved Big Ron on the European nights. He just didn't have the same intensity as Andy Gray, so it was a different kind of experience watching a match with Ronglish. Clive Tyldesley and Ron were a great team for that era of Champions League.

"The big goalie's coming up"

It all went south when Townsend was marginalised.
In and around the keeper.
That's better.
Etc

Gray was a really good commentator who could elevate the drama on the ptich, but I think there's a lot of nostalgia now because Gray was commentating on better football back then, kind of like the golden days of PL football.

Imagining that 4-2 at Highbury where Gray was criticising Almunia for going walkabout, praising the one-touch football, the whole entertainment level would have been ruined by VAR checks. Gray was excellent but he commentated on better football.

Tyler was also quality in those days but you sensed over time he became understandably bored by what he was commentating on.

Aw mate, yeah. They were the best
