There are all these threads about getting a new manager. This person is repsonsible for everything from the kitman, man-management, scouting and signing new players, coaching, tactics etc.
We had Fergie doing this (he did utilize his assistants well too). Klopp and Pep are closer to manager / coach archetype too. Poch also loves to take full responsibility for all things.
Right now, the best two managers are taken. We are always going to get a worse version of Pep and Klopp or some an unproven upstart.
Instead, what if stripped all the qualities required for a modern manager into two (I did write about this last year).
In this instance, getting a DoF becomes a bigger priority. A coach is a dependant on the DoF's vision.
The DoF's job will be to think of the vision of the club:
My main point is that if we were to step away from the next coach and thinking about finding someone to implement a goal and vision, we would be able to have way more options for potential head coaches.
Just look at Barcelona, who appoint new coaches all the time without much of a drop off in quality. We need to be in that position.
The only flip side here is that if we got the wrong the DoF with the wrong vision and no ambition.
Anyway, it's Christmas and I was sitting here dreaming about what could be.

- The goal of DoF would be something very specific (e.g. win the Champions League two times in three years by playing great football and with 3-4 academy players in the line-up)
- What do they need to achieve this?
- The players
- 3-4 academy players mean that the academy needs to be good enough to produce these players. Can we make further improvements to ensure we are producing potential Champions League winning players?
- Is the scouting system finding suitable players? Are knowing which players have release clauses?
- Are we getting players with the right temperament and attitude to learning and improvement. No fragile egos or players who think they've made it upon joining United.
- Coaching
- Are the current coaches improving the players? Are there better coaches that can improve players in all positons.
- Are the facilities good enough for coaching and improving players.
- Are the fitness coaches and physios the right ones for mitigating injuries.
- Head coach - instead of getting a manager - the head coach will specialise in coaching, tactics, man-management the usual duties of the manager.
- They have to have the same vision as the DoF for the direction they want the club to go.
- They will give feedback on players to DoF and if there is a need for moving people on.
- They have less of a say on the transfers and more of a say on the day to day management.
- They will have autonomy towards the style of play and tactics.
- They will have some control on the backroom team.
