That´s true. Right now Onana faces ZERO pressure with an even worse turkish GK behind him, a third one just sold/loaned. We either need to bring a replacement in or at least a serious competition, otherwise he won´t step up.
This seems like an unnecessary edition to your post.

Probably just bad decision making, running into traffic unnecessarily.
What's he like on corners out of interest, don't know why I'm asking because it's never happening

I haven't seen him much but I do recall others saying it's a glaring weakness of his.

If he’s available and we have even a 1% chance then he should absolutely become our focus. More so than a striker, midfielder, or any other position. We’re not gonna go anywhere unless we upgrade on the useless goalkeeper we currently have.

Yeah I would be worried it would get targeted, mind you he dealt very well with scouse threat in second leg last year. Not forgetting Villa and Arsenal in both legs too

I think he's fine to be honest. He's being held to a much higher standard than other goalkeepers. He is really good at most things and an exceptional shot stopper.

I’d be delighted if Donnarumma was our keeper next season, but here’s why it won’t happen…

Onana isn’t going anywhere bar Saudi silliness. He’s first choice, got 3 years left, would back himself to play because that’s what top athletes do, even if another keeper arrived and, crucially, is absolutely rubbish so no team he’d want to join would sign him.

As such, if we signed Donnarumma for £40m on £300k+ wages, as a club we’d be spending £20-25m in amortisation on fees and around £500k per week, or £25m a year, in wages on the two of them. Show me a top club that’s spending £50m a year on their goalkeeping department.

Ultimately, we can’t make this kind of signing whilst Onana is first choice. If a cheap option can displace him, then next summer, when he’s only got two years, maybe he’s itching to move. Maybe we could sign Donnarumma on a free then.
Could loan Onana out, get someone to cover his wages.

Tbf I can see this happening towards the end of the month.
But if we buy Donnarumma, we will need to also dispose of Onana (as there is no need to have two highly paid GKs in the roster)

Yeah that's gonna be the tricky part, well along with meeting asking price and wage demands too

Then we’ll dispose of him…

So you say. Maybe we don’t want to fund Lammens if we can get Donnarumma
No that’s what the club said before this all kicked up with Donnarumma. Briefed that no keepers would be coming in unless Bayındır leaves. That was after we inquired about a loan for Martínez. Just seems far-fetched. Most likely another case of a player posturing for a new contract.

There was also a ‘brief’ we would be happy with no CF and that we had to sell players to buy anyone. Then after we don’t need to sell to buy, better to wait and see

I think Newcastle forced our hand with Šeško so we’ve decided to put it on the credit card. But there’s a limit to that credit and a young striker talent who has been a longterm club target is a bit different to a GK who will demand £300k per week.

But yes of course we’ll wait and see. What other option do we have ?

I don’t think this is just a ploy to get a new deal — there’s genuine substance to it. PSG are very close to signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille for €40 million. There’s no way he’s making the move as a second-choice keeper without guarantees.

Why are people worrying about having two GK on high wages. Club has flushed 1 billion down the drain without getting anywhere. Think this is the least of the problem we should worry about. If paying double wages means we get a top tier GK, I am all for it. Also we still need to see if Donnaruma even is open of the idea to join the club.

Ever heard the expression "throwing good money after bad"?

Every possible scenario should end with Onana no longer being our starting keeper.

Of course we need to bin off Onana. But as pointed out finding a club that would want him will be a big challenge - but we should make it clear he has absolutely no future with us, and his agent can find him a way out. If we can’t get rid of him either on loan or perm (obviously preferred), then we will have to accept the 4th most expensive keeper of all time is our reserve keeper for this season.

Yeah think IF (enormous one) there's genuine interest then will have to wait until we sell Garnacho and Antony.

Not to derail from the main point, but is this factual?

So you acknowledge we have made a monumental mistake in buying Onana, but just have to ride it out and accept it?
He wasn't talking about Onana. He was talking about how we should carry on paying crazy wages because we have done so in the past.

Of course Onana needs replacing. He doesn't need replacing with someone who would be getting 300k+ per week.

I don’t advocate that. And the deal would need to fit in with current framework - and think we have already done a good job or lowering expectations of massive salaries from players (and agents). We will no longer hand out ridiculous contracts. Any signing, inc Donnarumma would need to fit in to that.

If PSG signed a new GK, we put in a cheeky loan offer covering 50% of his wages?

Next year when he is a free agent then we can try to agree something with him. But I think most likely not because he is looking for a huge contract which I don't think we could afford for a GK.

Yeah why not it's worth a try
