'tis a silly place
International break. No United matches since 2021, next one not until sometime after the World Cup. We need to talk about something.

On Carrick: “He’s doing an unbelievable job,” Giggs said. “The hardest thing in football is winning matches and Michael’s doing that. Not only that, he’s been really shrewd in his coaching staff. I’ve seen a lot of managers come whose coaching staff I know – because I’ve got friends in the club – have been c--p."

Some candidates that spring to mind immediately:

Chris Armas

Affectionately known as Ted Lasso by his friends. Sandwiched between spells in Toronto and Leeds, his time at United was fleeting and Armas is now the current manager of Kansas City Current. Currently.

Jorge Vital

Famously regarded as a better player than Marcus Rashford, his talents were sadly wasted coaching Andre Onana on how to deflect blame rather than deflect shots.

Phil Neville

An outside shot maybe, but we know Fizza was always catching shots from the rest of the Class of 92, especially from messrs Giggs and Butt, so it wouldn't surprise me if Ryan was referring to his old mate. England women's team seemed to low key despise him.

Jimmy Lumsden

Did this guy actually do any coaching? His job seemed to be picking up balls, looking like the old fella from Neighbours, and, presumably, telling Shinji Kagawa he didn't fit in David Moyes' plans and could start looking at flights to Dortmund

It could be an outsider I haven't mentioned.... who do you think Giggs was referring to?

I read that some of Amorim's coaches didn't have badges, maybe them or ETH - those were our worst periods.

Who have we had at first team level who was actually really highly rated? Holland is actually the first person some other club might try to poach/ hire as manager while he's still actually working here. Holland has been a really shrewd appointment.

Fergie had some strong staff for sure. Ole hired former players. The continental coaches and their staff have all been a bust. The less said about Moyes and co the better

Hard hitting knowledge right there.

McKenna seemed to be highly rated after his work at Spurs, but apart from that I can't think of anyone.

I thought ETH would have had decent ones. Wasn’t Van Der Gaag an highly rated coach?

I would have guessed Ragnick's crew first, myself. They seemed to have -100 respect points from players and media alike pretty soon after taking over, for right or wrong.
That seems likely; I remember there being talk at the time about how Ragnick's preferred choices weren't available or willing to leave their positions for a role in a caretaker's regime, so had to get very creative/desperate with who he could bring in.

Conversely, who are the best coaches we've had?

That makes sense. In hindsight, I wonder if the cub were caught off guard by Carrick and McKenna departing with Ole? Maybe they were hoping those two would stay for the Ragnick spell.

According to Raphael Honigstein, Ragnick couldn't get work permits for his preferred coaches due to Brexit.

If your coaches are so incompetent their job is to put cones questions should be asked on their boss (Head Coach)

A good head coach needs a good second man and it's one of his main job to identify the weakness he needs to cover

I thought he was in jail to be honest
Slow news day? why did they interview a prisoner

Given he wasn't convicted it would be surprising if they put him in jail
Fortunately, despite turning out for England schoolboys once, he has always maintained that he isn't English.

He's most likely talking about Amorim's coaches - all lacking in experience with only Portuguese league on their CVs

Maybe some of ETHs backroom too

Had a peek at Jimmy Lumsden's wiki page out of curiosity after this thread and this was on it

With the dismissal of David Moyes as Manchester United manager on 22 April 2014, Lumsden also parted company with the club along with assistant manager, Steve Round.

Lumsden was briefly linked with the vacant Southampton job in 2014 but insisted he was too busy with his allotment.

Carlos Queiroz

Yeah, good shout. He certainly made us more defensively solid in Europe. Rui Faria is widely regarded as an excellent coach with his tactical periodisation. McKenna is clearly a top level coach given his success with limited resources.

Are there more unsung heroes?

Surely the better question is which coaches have been GOOD since Fergie?

We thought they were the bestest. But apparently to Giggs they're crap.

Anyway I've just noticed the third one from the left looks like the thumbs up senior manager guy
