Glazers have tabled a $1.8B bid to buy IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru | lost the bid

Crazy to think that an IPL team is valued at 30% of United!

Factoring in that IPL is played for 2 months of the year compared to 9-10 months of premier league; its even more mind boggling

I think what excites them about this deal is that it that IPL cricket in India is a franchise sport so there is no relegation/promotion to worry about. It is perfect as they can continue to milk money without having to seriously compete for top honors.

Coincidentally I live in Bengaluru although I don't support the local team. They are cancer and RCB after years of heartbreak had finally won the IPL. This is going to be seriously detrimental to the entire league. But I am sure local politicians will lap it up and sell it to the rest of the country as "US investment".

It's not if you do a bit of research on the economics of an IPL franchise. It is humongous. Around 18%-20% of the world watches IPL like crazy. It is a money minting machine. To put things in perspective, just the IPL itself, a domestic league, makes 4-5 times the money that ICC the world governing body for cricket makes through international tournaments.

They can pledge shares they hold of united, but cant directly load debt on united now that they are basically partners with ratcliffe. Also pretty sure, its only avram bidding, so other glazers wont allow him to put debt on united for his personal gain.
This is likely funded by himself(sold united shares to ratcliffe at time of sale ) + They ve taken dividends out of united also will be funded by debt, that they put on a holding company that will buy RCB. Pretty sure they ahve great credit score considering united have been paying interest timely for 20 years now.

Really? Do that many people actually watch it? Eye-popping numbers . Just wondering who (ie broadcasters) is paying for this and where the customer base is located. Amazing numbers for a sport that isn't played worldwide like football.
We are the most populated country in the world (and the rest of the subcontinent is enormous too) and suffer from cricket brainrot. Regardless of how rubbish the competition or match is, Indians will watch cricket. Hopefully there comes a time when we grow out of this obsession.

Would the UK government have any way to impose legal restrictions on another leveraged buyout if United is on the US stock exchange? You'd hope that if this happening they're at least selling us first?

They can use their shares in United as collateral but they can’t dump the debt on the club.

It’s good to see that for all the money they’ve poured into United, they can still afford to help elsewhere…

If true, I wonder if this will open the door for Ratcliffe/Ineos to increase their holding?

How much could you possiby make from Cricket in india?

I know it's massive over there, but is it really worth an investment of almost 2bn?

Massive amounts. It's got huge TV rights and a salary cap so your costs are controlled.

If you want to make money by owning a sports team, make sure it's one where there is a salary cap in place. The worst NFL teams are more profitable than the top football clubs

It means nothing for United. INEOS gave them a billion odd and they could easily finance the rest.

The game with United was always the long term value of the club and they still think there's much more to come there. The real income is from their NFL team and now another franchised team

Tomorrow's batting order

1. Sesko
2. Mbuemo
3. Fernandes
4. Maguire
5. Casemiro
6. Amad
7. Mainoo
8. Cunha
9. Dalot
10. Martinez
11. Lammens
I would say that the forwards as bowlers are a better analogy. You’ve got the batting order the wrong way round.

I don’t know why these clowns keep investing in sports teams when they know they aren’t any good at running them.

They've done okay with cricket so far. Avram owns a side in the UAE based league which finished runners-up twice in three seasons before winning this year's competition recently.

I feel sorry for the fans of Royal Challengers Benalaru. There will be tough years ahead. The Glazers simply don't care about your team. All they are thinking of is how much money they can make from you

The Bucs got a Super Bowl win fairly recently, and is in pretty good knicks to make the playoffs once in a while, thats plenty good for a NFL team tbf. And United have at least tripled in value since their pop leveraged the club, so they’ve done great out of owning sports teams.

They have, it's at the cost of United being run poorly but in pure business terms, they've done great.

*Not stating they have run United well, in business terms only. They got away with murder!!

Yes, which is what I said pretty much. For us fans it’s been pretty awful since Fergie left, but for them owning sports teams has been a lucrative venture, so there’s no reason to stop.
