Glazers selling a significant amount of shares

I think an Asian buyer, like in China, could be a possibility. They are like the Arabs, all about the fame. The way they are selling off shares, they know the club has just about peaked. Super league was going to be their golden pathway but that is gone. In a few years Newcastle will be challenging.

The suggestion in the Guardian article is that the Glazers bought Ronaldo to hype the share price before they sold off a chunk.

"There was a similar head-spin about the Manchester United share sale this week, the sense of a brilliantly closed circle in action. Here’s how it went down. In August the Glazers decided Manchester United should sign Cristiano Ronaldo, a star player the team don’t exactly need, but a massive boost to the brand, and all paid for out of Manchester United income.

Because of that star power the share price leapt to its highest point since 2018. Ole Gunnar Solskjær, a good company man, could be relied on to say the correct heritage-ball things. A month later the Glazers sold their personal shares, making a large profit on an investment made while wearing the clothes of Manchester United. It’s brilliant really. There is no risk here, only reward. They just write it off. "

I’m no great business mind, but If they now only own about 60% of United, doesn’t that mean someone rich out there can buy out the other 40% and then be in a good position to take over the club?

it will only happen by the Glazers design. Also consider the next owners might be a nightmare aswell

Brilliant, yes, would not doubt that at all and shares after signing Ronaldo would be at its highest. Yes, a few weeks later, selling big lots of shares. Inside trading at its finest. Talk it up, sign Ronnie, Viva Ronaldo ;) being sung and sell off.

Ole has very little say when it comes to transfers. Varane and Maguire were targets of ours long before he was here. He obviously doesn't like Donny and Bruno was definitely not a target of his. Think at best he gives a formal yes and that's it.

Did Cosmo Kramer write that article?
Yes. Read the article and you'll see the Seinfeld reference.

You think Ole wanted Ronaldo? I imagine he did. He's a top player. You think he wanted him more than a top DM? No chance.

He may not be a Pep/Klopp level, but even an armchair fan like me can see what we need is a DM more than we need a shirt seller. So presumably Ole can see it too.

He's not in charge of transfers.

"Does anyone actually believe Solskjær is managing one of the world’s most powerful clubs on merit? Or that his progress is being judged by conventional fan-facing metrics? This is a new version of the manager. Welcome to the manager as a kind of celebrity maître d’, heritage officer, conductor of the Manchester United open-top bus tour. This is not really a criticism, more just an observation."

Besides Rice whom West Ham valued at £90-100m which top DM were we linked with? The whole of last summer we were linked with Sancho and then Pau Torres/Kounde before Varane became available making it clear CB and RW were the priorities. There was never any strong link to DMs besides some mentions of Declan Rice it's very possible DM was NEVER the priority this summer hence why we're now hearing it'll be the priority next summer alongside a ST

Calling Ronaldo a 'shirt seller'.

It entirely depends on how confident Ole was in Martial actually getting back into form this season. If he was confident, then a DM should have been a higher priority. But if he wasn't, many people would have agreed that a striker would be more important. We would have been left with a badly out of form Martial, an aging Cavani who is increasingly injury-prone and likely to miss parts of the season due to international duties, and Greenwood who hasn't shown any reason to think he's ready to play as a striker yet. Fred/Mctominay/Pogba/Matic/VDB may not be a great selection of midfielders, but it's still better than our striker options would have been. Both Fred and McTominay have started the season significantly out of form which has made it look worse than it actually is.

It's very reminiscent of Fergie buying van Persie instead of a midfielder in his last season.

I don’t want the club to have an owner at all.

But I was asking from pure curiosity. They can’t keep selling shares and shares and shares and not relinquish any power eventually.

If some multi billionaire out there decided he wanted 40% of United and to then start making offers for the rest, he’d surely be in a good position. A lot of takeovers seem to start with people owning 10% / 20% to start with

Yeah but we have Matic and McFred. They're all terrible. Nobody is complaining that we have Ronaldo. But let's not delude ourselves we got him for football reasons.

They’re sports team owners. That’s their family business model. It must be exhausting being one of those people convinced every slight change in wind direction is a sign they’re going to sell.

Yes looks like it.
"Ole just telling you we are signing xxxxx ok"
Ole: "ok".
Ole next day to press: "I have final say on transfers"

Its nothing like that all. Fergie went for Van Persie by persuing him and needing a top class striker, who he never dropped for a premier game if fit. City needed a striker and we wasnt in for him until they were. We were frightened of the Tevez effect, the fact that one of our legends could possibly win the league for City and probably the money men were licking their chops as well. The fact we got him right at the end of the transfer window proves that.

Anyone who thinks the Glazers will jump ship after 16 years need to pray Arsenal (as they have been mentioned) or another club get bought by rich owners. When there isnt a chance of top 4 then they will sell up. May take 2-3 years, but I would bet if this scenario comes about then in 2-3 years they will be gone, once Newcastle, City, Chelsea and one other are spending big on players and can offer a Mbappe or Haaland type player £1 mill a week wages after £150-200 mill transfer. Liverpool might be fighting with us Spurs and Leicester for Europa League places.

I also feel the same. Who will be the potential buyer?

They bought Tom Brady at 42, but that worked out very well!! Huge revenues when they signed Tom and made Tampa a household name again and big media. Sounds familiar!! Similar to Ronnie, a stop gap signing at the end of his career. Never tried for Tom in his prime as too costly. Brady will have bought Glazers a few more years of no questioning as well. Sounds familiar! ;)

We were certainly spooked. I see no real evidence City wanted him though other than they wanted Harry Kane so were looking for a striker. I don't see Ronaldo as a Pep signing as he doesn't press.

Competent? Hmm I’m not sure about that. From wanting to hike seat prices by a huge amount to the ESL and lots of complaints about not enough investment. The difference is they got lucky employing Klopp who due to his performance masks a lot of issues like fergie used to do. If they hadn’t signed Klopp you’d see a lot more complaints possible even protests

I'm not sure FSG are much better than The Glazers. They don't have Liverpool in huge debt but there's two key things keeping them together which are Klopp who's outstanding when it comes to turning turd into gold and the £142m from selling Coutinho that financed their two most important signings in VVD and Allison. For all the shit we give The Glazers they're much bigger spenders than FSG problem has been how we've spent it which has improved over the years. Hopefully it keeps getting better with our new Data Analytics Team and "DOF plus Technical Director"

Agreed. They got lucky with Klopp who came in and gave the recruitment department control when it comes to recruitment according to journos affiliated to Liverpool. And together they formed a great partnership, but i'm not sure how long they're gonna be able to keep this up without significant investment.

It's not inside trading from a legal standpoint though.

But why did Klopp go there and not to Old Trafford? Because he realised that Woodward always puts football decisions behind financial ones (i.e. the Glazer return) in the transfer market and the club infrastructure. When we sold Ronaldo, the Glazers just pocketed it. We have not spent at much as City over the last ten year on players. But more importantly, what we have spent has been shaped by non footballing factors in an often ineffective way. Case in point - buying Ronaldo instead of a DM.

So well that they're now permament mid-tablers fighting for an Europa League spot. I mean... simply genius stuff.
Yes we will end up scrapping for top four increasingly desperately. You can expect the Superleague proposal to return in a different form.

Klopp didn't join us because he was under contract when we approached him in 2013 and 2014 and he was still fully committed to Dortmund. The Disneyland thing was obviously annoying but you're contorting facts saying it was due to our "structure" we never approached him in 2015 when he was free and when LVG was still under contract. If he had said no to us then instead of Liverpool your point would have been valid but Mourinho never said no to us despite knowing who we are so doubt Klopp would have been the same case. Talking about our spending since 2011 is irrelevant because we never spent close to City from 2011-2013 under Fergie. Our spending post Fergie era however is right up there with them and you can Google the numbers if you want problem has been a case of spending badly
And once again as I told you earlier a DM was NEVER on the cards. Our transfer business was set to end with Sancho and Varane if Ronaldo wasn't available so you're wrong to say it was an either or situation. Camavinga and Rice were the only CMs Ole wanted but the former wanted Spain and the latter was valued at £90-100m Ole and the recruitment team came to a mutual agreement to push a DM till next summer so once again you're blaming The Glazers(terrible owners don't get me wrong) for something that actually isn't on them
