It seems to me they only pick some players with high potential in Football Manager, with no reference to their actual performance in real life.
That is my assumption too!!

Forgot about Davies actually. Would be a worthy winner.
I was about to draft a strongly worded reply. ;)

I also expect one of Davies, Sancho, and Haaland to win. Depends on the weighting of success with their teams vs individual greatness the three have shown.

Final 20 man shortlist. Greenwood makes it in.

Alphonso Davies - Bayern
Bukayo Saka - Arsenal
Jadon Sancho - Dortmund
Fabio Silva - Wolves
Ansu Fati - Barcelona
Phil Foden - Man City
Eduardo Camavinga - Rennes
Mason Greenwood - Man United
Erling Haaland - Dortmund
Callum Hudson-Odoi - Chelsea
Dejan Kulusevski - Juventus
Segino Dest - Barcelona
Dominik Szoboszlai - Salzburg
Mitchel Bakker - PSG
Sandro Tonali - Milan
Ferran Torres - Man City
Rodrygo - Real Madrid
Vinicius Junior - Real Madrid
Ryan Gravenberch - Ajax
Jonathan David - Lille

Has to be one of Haaland or Sancho who wins it, surely.

A bit late to this thread, but even looking away from performance, having Lingard on the longlist is strange considering he's 27. What's the upper age limit?

20-man shortlist looks a lot better. Ansu Fati is probably going to win this at some stage, but probably not this year.

The Lingard addition was just a joke  The age limit is 21.

Is voting still open? Think Haaland cements it with the start he's had to this season. 11 goals in 10 games. He has been comfortably maintaining a goal per 90 minutes for 15 months now. Messi/Ronaldo/Lewa were seasoned pros before they started putting up those kinds of numbers, this guy has barely turned 20.

Really - he seems a bit out of place to be honest looking at what he had done up to the end of last season
2 senior appearances for Ajax (in the cup)
5 appearances for PSG last season (1 league, 3 cup and 1 league cup)
two U21 caps no senior caps

and 5 league appearances this season plus Mitchel Bakker

Haaland to me. Sancho doesn't have anywhere near the same level of CL performances (NT ones too but I don't care much about that) and I don't think Davies is as good as either as an overall player

Haaland is one of those "weird feelings about football" where I feel he is now too good to be on these types of lists with kids. Then I remember he is like 16

I'd say it's between Haaland and Sancho for the Golden Boy award.. just like it would be if we could sign a top player right now.. Out of those 2, the player i would like us to sign would be Haaland as he would make the biggest impact along with having a genuine game changer in our squad...He's already a world class striker and will only get better.

That would mean Greenwood plays RW for the rest of his career

Haaland is a good shout, but has to be Davies for me. A string of great performances on the way to winning the CL. The position he plays probably means he'll be in with less of a chance though, but possibly EBH aside, he's achieved far more than others on the list.

Davies for me. Lad has had an absolutely phenomenal season.
In terms of success, yeah. But Haaland (and Sancho, but at this point I'd say he can't compete wit his teammate) has been superior individually. Kid's a machine.

Fair enough, probably true. Just think Davies deserves an accolade of some sort.

Top 5/7:

1) Haaland
2) Davies (very unlucky and even won the CL, but Haaland has hit Messi and Ronaldo-like numbers in his first year at the top level of football)
3) Sancho
4) Greenwood, Camavinga, Rodrygo
5) Foden

Really strong list. Expect a lot of those will be future stars which isn’t always the case with these lists.

Sancho should have won it over Joao Felix last year.

This year is all Haaland though.
It's quite incredible what an incredible top 3 (likely) we will have though with Haaland, Sancho and Davies.
In most other years any of those would win with ease.

Sancho has been playing at a high level (albeit in a farmers league ;) ) for the last two years

Haaland and Sancho are mortal locks at one and two. Davies deserves nr 3, but maybe Fati pips him to it because he plays for one of the Spanish giants and that always weighs a tad in voters minds.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
It really is an incredibly strong list.

Sancho, Haaland and Davies have to be top three, personally in that order but it could really be any way.

Then you have Greenwood, Camavinga, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Fati probably competing to try to round out the top 5..
